This Taco Bell is pretty hit or miss. During the day I've always had great service, but during the night there's been a problem every single time I've gone. We've had missing items a couple times. Also twice now, we've waited an hour in the drive thru just for them to close the store early right when we get to the order speaker. Seriously they'll close it at 9:30pm when they say they're open til 3am. And there's no way to get out once you're stuck in that line, due to a poorly planned parking lot. The food itself has always been yummy! Always fresh and hot. It's just the nighttime service that's the issue. read more

Waited over a hour for food in drive through. I even ordered online and when I asked for a cash refund for my food when they told us they closed 15 minutes early I was called rude and told to shut up. Not the first time I've had this experience and when I do get food it's always missing something. Don't recommend coming here unless you want to be disappointed. read more

My friend went here and got screamed at by the staff. They screwed up her order and instead of trying to fix it, the staff just told her to take it. The food itself was thrown together horribly and looked like a hot mess compared to what your order normally should look like, which caused it to leak through the bag. After that, another person we were with went in to confront the staff, but the staff wasn't even taking her order in the first place. No restaurant should ever treat customers this bad. read more

Do not place an order through the app. It will say that it is done when it is not. Also you have to go through the drive through which defeats the purpose of the mobile order. Staff did not communicate with any of the people waiting inside for over 40 minutes. Staff also could work on manners. read more

Have always had mixed service at this location but will no longer be a customer at this location. Frequently have messed up my orders and today after dropping off my car at the shop next door, waited at the counter for 10 min. Had enough time to search for and download a service bell app, still nobody, and finally looked up the store phone number to call them and got an answer. All 4 employees we outside on the side of the building having a smoke break and figured they would notice anyone enter the building. I love your food Taco Bell but you need to fix this location pronto. Update 12/21/2018 have since gone back 3 times after hearing that new management has been hired at this location. firstly, I used to work at Taco Bell and it was not a good environment. it was very toxic, because the new management wasn't polite. every order from DoorDash has a missing item, or the food is cold. this is not the dashers fault, and Taco Bell should consider better management. I understand things happen sometimes, we all make mistakes but it's every order they mess up or miss something. the workers need better training with customer service as well, I called the store to get an update on my current order, and the person on the other end of the phone was snippy with his responses. Ok Taco Bell you're the next ok next to Del Taco that I like your service in story city sucks they can never get it right they need to get their speaker fixed for one thing and they close early they don't have breakfast or not even open in the morning I'd actually like to get it there it's closer to where I live but I have to get it a half hour away from my house by the time I get it home to my husband it's cold and you change your menu prices every time I come in and tell me you have this one day and the next day you will give it to me for what your menu says. It should reiterate prior to my review that this is a Taco Bell. It's a cost-savvy, fast food establishment. It was not built to be a 5-star Hispanic-Fusion restaurant with a maître d' and reservation list days long. I wanted to emphasize this point because I'm reviewing this place based on that being common knowledge. That being said, this Taco Bell has shown has been a tried and true example of how fast food restaurants can still amplify a positive dining experience through customer service and clean food preparation. My experiences with the Ames Taco Bell have primarily been through the drive-thru in later evenings. My wife is a big fan of them and so I'll often stop there on my way home when I have to work later than normal. There has not been one instance while doing this where the employee has made me as if I have just wasted there time. Every time I stop I'm greeted appropriately and pleasantly. This attitude is carried throughout the entire transaction. I will note, there are certain times of the day that the line can back up, but with only one window, being popular, and with great retention of customers - it's easy to forgive. The menu is standard, and expected. They offer the full range of Taco Bell's essential, specialty, and light-eating items. There isn't really much to say in terms of their food - it's Taco Bell - you know what to expect. I will say from the standpoint of being able to vie w the kitchen, it's very well kept up. There never appears to be that greasy, "fastfood-esque", vibe to it. It's always well-lit and viewable from inside and drive-up. The customer is able to see their food being prepared. That cleanliness transfers to the employees. It does vary from person-to-person, but in an overall they do exceed that generalized subpar employee hygiene. This not to say other places don't meet simple standards, but I have definitely seen worse. I have not spent much time inside, but when I have, it's been fine. I have given this Taco Bell 5-stars based on my expectations of this type of place, and previous experiences with other, not as pleasing places for a quick meal. I commend them on their effort for an upbeat customer service (even during late hours), their fresh (to the natural limits of fast food) preparation, and the cleanliness. Any Ames native can tell you, when the original Taco Bell closed there was unexpected cry for the city that only a 3-minute chalupa could fill. I believe the new one has replaced that cry with a Dorito-dusted smile. Good work! read more

The previous owner obviously cared, but now the company "Perfect Tacos" (LOL) don't care about anything but the bottom dollar, they serve messy nasty tasting food. You get what you pay for. Many of the employees are very nice, but there's about a 50% chance that your order will be incorrect in some way. Once there was meat on the outside of my veggie burrito (which was missing guac too). Today I ordered the triple layer nachos, add jalapeños, and they forgot my beans. Last time I ordered the nachos, they gave me the wrong sauce. The receipt lists my order correctly, it's just not made right from the ticket. The food was excellent that is the only reason for the 1 star, but the service was slow. Your drive thru employee had the most unpleasant attitude ever. For starter when she handing out my order the way she handed it to me it was like she was throwing it at me. Secondly, I have never had problems with your cashiers of being friendly and offering to take the empty cup of ice and throwing it away or even if it had a little liquid in it. They would say "sure I'd be happy to take that for you and throw it away for you.", that is what keeps me coming back here when your cashiers are nice and friendly. Thirdly, she did not have to be rude the way she talked to me, even other restaurants treat their customers friendly and go out of their way by offering to throw the cup away. Finally, who taught your cashier to be rude by slamming the window and talking about a guest rudely while they're still in the drive thru. It amazes me that this place consistently takes 20 minutes or more to complete a simple order. This statement is true whether you're in the drive thru or dine in. The first time it happened I was willing to write it off as the crew having an off night. The second did it for me and I decided I was done with them.
