Great exercise and journey to the top and amazing scenery view of Boise especially during the evening sunset or even the sunrise in the morning, there is no driving to the top for people who are unfamiliar with the area.

Easy hiking path from the old penitentiary to the top with nice views of Boise. There are signs at the top that will tell you what you are looking at. Good spot to take a visitor.

Table Rock is a great hike for all ages. It is a little steep in some sections and you might get winded. But take your time, the view is worth it. The view provides hikers a spectacular vote of the Treasure Valley. If you are unable to hike, there is a dirt road that will take you to the top. Then there is about 300 yards of walking on a gravel path. You'll enjoy the experience whichever you choose.

City of Boise please remove or cover up this graffiti.

Located next to the Old Penitentiary, Quarry View Park, and Idaho Botanical Gardens. Parking is free on a dirt lot (they really need to pave it as it is very dusty). The lot is located across from the Old Penitentiary and I posted a satellite view picture as it can be tricky to find when driving in. Bathrooms are unisex. Two of them in the dirt parking area and not nice at all. I recommend using the Quarry View Park restrooms instead. The hike up to the top is doable for most people. And although it starts pretty steep the elevation rise slows down for a good portion of the middle of the hike. Round trip distance is about 3.6-3.8 miles depending on which way you go. Great views at the top. I found there to be no litter and friendly hikers along the way. There are two garbage cans at the top so pick up any litter you see and dispose of your own trash at the top if needed. While there is graffiti that should be removed/covered from rocks at the top of table rock they are not in view from the actual peak and seating area. P.S. I removed one star for the dirt parking lot, bathrooms (they smelled bad, had lots of flies, and no toilet paper), and graffiti that could be easily covered or removed. Pleaseix those things city of Boise!

I'm having a hard time getting started on this review, mostly because I'm struggling to come up with the words to explain how much I love this hike. I'm sure many Boiseans are rolling their eyes as they read this because Table Rock has almost become so popular and mainstream that it has sort of lost it's "cool factor". Well, I don't really care. I unashamedly love this hike and think it is amazing! Rant over. The Hike: This 3.8 mile loop starts near the Old Idaho Penitentiary. There are two paths that instantly emerge: one appears steeper and the other is somewhat flat. The one that starts out flat has a steep incline shortly after, and the one that starts out steep levels out and is flat for the entire mid-portion of the hike. About 2/3 through, you start making your final ascent towards the top where you get to enjoy those stellar views. Here is the point where conversation grows sparse, and, if you are hiking alone, you turn up the music in your headphones. If you are wanting to get a good cardio workout in and do a little tush-toning at the same time, I'd say this hike is the way to go! The Views: I love every view that this hike offers. Whether you are at the top of the mountain overlooking the city, on your way up and taking in the contrast of the sky and rusty-colored mountain, or taking in the wildflowers (fine, they're technically weeds, but I still think they're lovely), you have something beautiful to captivate your eyes while you enjoy some fresh air. Final thoughts: - Bring a big water bottle. Better yet, bring a camelback. You'll need it, especially if it's a hot day! - For goodness sake, if the city puts out a notice to not hike due to rain/mud, do not hike! They only close these trails in an effort to prevent erosion. Listen to 'em, folks!

Excellent hike with breathtaking views! The hike was easy in terms of difficulty but rewarding at the top!

First time hiking up to the famous Table Rock with my two boys. It was a beautiful day yesterday and spring break, so there were a lot of people. We started from the Old Penitentiary entrance 15 up. 15 is very flat, wide and smooth. Lots of families with kids and dogs. Most of the dog owners I met on our way were very responsible about their pets waste. I did see a few piles of unpleasant doggy poops on the way. At the intersection of trail 17, we decided to try it. Much rockier and narrower trails. It can be a challenge for families with little ones. Some areas scared my 8 year old because it was "too close" to the cliff (he thinks). In one area, there are more rocks and apparently more graffiti and shattered beer bottles on the ground. However, it is quieter and less busier than 15. We made to the top. The view is definitely beautiful. The boys and I thought it was worth the effort. According to my sports watch, I burned at least 600 calories on that trip. I think it is worth it.

I love hiking Table Rock, it is definitely my go to hike. It is very close to downtown Boise and for me it is the perfect short hike to get you some exercise, good blend of steep and gradual inclines to keep your heart rate up without requiring a lot of breaks to make it to the top. The only reason I wouldn't give this 5 stars is because everybody else agrees with me on how awesome it is and it is probably the busiest hiking trail in the Boise area. Great views of the valley from the top, lots of times you will see people getting engagement/graduation pictures at the precipice. Pro-tip: If you want the view but hiking isn't your thing you can drive up, but really, just hike it.

    At the top!

Hello - heart rate raising hike, pretty much downtown! Yes! The views of the city and surrounding area are super great from the top. Took me, a summer weekend hiker from Denver 45 minutes to summit and 20 to get down, so can definitely be done after work! Decent sized parking lot right next to the old Penitentiary! I'll definitely be seeing the top of this rock often on my visits!

Best place for a date ever!

Such a great view!! You'd expect it to be full of rambunctious high schoolers. Perhaps that is why they stuck a 30 foot tall cross that is illuminated all night long. It actually lights up the rock really well once the sun goes down. Anyways, we went one night and were surrounded by so many demographics: families with young children, middle school couples, groups of girlfriends, college guys, etc. It was refreshing to see people so well behaved at such a romantic spot! Plan on there being LOTS of wind. Layer up!

Super cool hike once you get to the top! Don't go in the middle of a hot day like I did. Ended up having to position my body against a cold rock I found to cool down. Almost passed out from heat stroke. Had to make it to the top though so I did. The view was great

We chose to drive most of the way up and stopped just before the sign that said road closed Nov- May.... but plenty of others drove all the way up in March. I am a rule follower and the sign scared me. If we come again, we will park at the penitentiary and make a few hours out of it. The views are great and some cool art up there too. Enjoy!

Pretty views of the city. Dog friendly also. I'm not gonna lie- the ride there scares me because I hate heights and driving near cliffs, but my bravery paid off. I had a great walk and my dogs did too.

    Dusk at Table Rock.

This area has one of the largest fall raptor migrations in the West and the students do raptor catch, banding and release. They also do net catch, banding and release of songbirds. And the same at night for owls. It is remarkable to have the opportunity to observe all this. Fitting for Review 1000. OPEN: To the public roughly mid July through end October. GETTING THERE: The trickiest part. Be sure to look at directions page on the web site. Your GPS won't get the job done for you. http://ibo.boisestate.edu/visit/#directions DICEY DRIVE: The road was repaired some last fall. Our visit was before those repairs were made. It was a treacherous drive along deep ruts in some parts. One of the guys in the car is the most expert driver I know and even he was concerned. Hopefully the repairs have helped. But plan on a four wheel drive vehicle and slow going! I understand the program offers rides at some times to a few people. Contact them for details. No H2O or LOO: There is no water. You'll need to bring your own. You'll also want to know that there is no Loo but for one pit toilet downhill of the site. IT'S COLDER AT ELEVATION: Lucky Peak elevation is high and you'll want to hang out for a while (be sure to stay for the raptor catch and release) so a jacket is a good idea. MORE OR FEWER PEOPLE: The four adults in our party thought a September Sunday early morning would be a good time to go to avoid crowds. HA! There was a grade school group with parents and teacher in tow that had camped there overnight (a brave lot, remember no water or bathrooms in the mix) and so there were a lot of people present to enjoy the setting, the birds and the grad students as they answered eager questions. If you want to plan a daytime field trip for a group or an overnight stay, you'll need to use the contact info on this Yelp page or at their web page to schedule with them. DATA COLLECTION: While we might advise a weekday excursion when the kids are in school if you're looking for connecting with the quiet Zen of the location, the kids were part of the fun as they were eager to hold and release the birds after the grad students took the ones they caught to weigh them, tag them and record them in the paper record keeping book. That was fun in itself, in this day of automated everything, to see scientists like these grad students keeping uber-detailed paper records. They use the data to identify migration routes, wintering areas, breeding areas, and mortality factors. HANDS-ON: I took the opportunity to release some of the smaller songbirds from my palm when offered the chance to do that. I passed on the chance to hold and release a raptor given absence of raptor gloves to wear to handle him or her. (Those talons are sharp!) But my friend was brave enough to do this and she described the experience of releasing that magnificent bird truly awe inspiring. ACCESSIBILITY: This location is more accessible to people with limited mobility than one might expect it to be. The surfaces at the site are relatively hard packed and the slopes between accessible entry parking and the bird activity site are doable with help. I have MS so had first hand experience with using same. I think wheelchair users might find it doable too. However, the Loo is not accessible. The raptor catch and release site was not walkable for me up a steep slope. They suggested I drive up, although vehicles are not typically allowed at the raptor ridge, to be able to participate like everyone else. Lovely! PARKING: Parking is outside a locked gate near the Loo. Park there and walk up. For people needing accessible parking or for those in pre-approved overnight groups, contact them in advance and they'll tell you the protocol to have the gate unlocked so you can drive up and park closer.
