The wine list is extensive and the server was very knowledgeable about both the food and the cocktails. Another awesome restaurant week find. I am so glad this is finally gaining momentum as my husband and I are enjoying finding new restaurants that we love. Our first time here and our poor server, we couldn't make up our minds on what we wanted to eat or drink, but she was amazingly patient with us. It's kind of their fault for having too many great options ;p We sampled some wines and beers before settling on a few to order through the night and even ended up with a blind selection on one of the beers. Once again, my husband ordered the beef entree and I went with the vegetarian option. I am sucker for a good polenta cake and I liked their spin on it, the chili lime broth was a nice compliment to the dish with the well prepared vegetables. My husband wasn't asked for his steak preparation but it was cooked to perfection. There was a slight disappointment in the dessert that my husband received, it was the corner piece of the brownie and it was too hard, but I shared mine which was mostly fine, still a bit overcooked, but still yummy. We are excited to come back and try other dishes on the menu and we better hurry before they change it for the season :) I love how more and more restaurants are going with fresh local ingredients. read more

Went on a Friday night with a group of 3. The dining room was pretty busy, but it seemed more chaotic than it should have because they only had 3 or 4 people working. On a busy Friday night, an additional set of hands would've made the wait times go way down. Ignoring the leisurely pace of the meal, the food and service were amazing. We got the Ugly Donuts and Mussels as appetizers. Donuts were very soft pull-apart balls of cheesey dough that had been fried. Very delicious. Mussels were in a very nice white wine sauce. For main dishes, we got the pork loin, trout, and flank steak. Aside from the flank steak being a little tougher than we expected, everything was very flavorful and pleasant. The potatoes that came with the pork loin were exceptional, especially with the balsamic glaze on the plate. Last but not least, we ordered the creme brulee, key lime parfait, and bread pudding. Great ends to a great meal. Will definitely be back when I'm in the Des Moines area. read more

Great place for lunch. I had the Melon Salad for lunch with chicken. Simple. Nicely finished. The pickled melon was tremendous when paired with fresh melon. It was dressed lightly which I prefer. Prosciutto offered a nice smokey balance. Bed of arugula was crisp and fresh. Service was quick and friendly. Nicely done! read more

I have been to Table 128 numerous times and realized that I have never written a review?!? So, here it is.....I am a huge fan. I've enjoyed dinner there with my boyfriend, several happy hours, lunches, and dinners with friends. The service is always outstanding and it is such a cozy and intimate dining setting. I highly recommend the Lynn's burger and rosemary and Parmesan fries. If you haven't been to Table 128, you need to check it out! It's a great restaurant in the western suburbs. read more

Traveling through des moines with a friend and stopped here for a late lunch. Absolutely delicious food and fantastic beer selection. Friend ordered a crab cake sandwich and the kale salad. I ordered the chipotle veggie burger and specialty cauliflower soup. Everything was amazing. I order house made veggie burgers everywhere I go and this one ranks at the top of my list. Fantastic spot in Clive!! I have been to a number of farm to table restaurants across the country but I think this might be one of my favorites. I had the donut appetizer to start and it was lighter than I expected with great flavor, and just a nice light amount of spice. Then I enjoyed the pork tenderloin special which had a whipped cauliflower purée and some very tasty cheese mixed with pickled onions. I don't generally clean my plate but this was a very good portion of food but not too much. Can't wait to return and try something else. read more

Finally, a nice place in the burbs that I can get behind. This is what I hoped that Trostel's Dish (terrible) would be. Located in a strip mall (but what isn't?), the inside is quaint and unassuming. The menu is interesting without trying to hard, and the wine, cocktail and beer list are well done without being overwhelming. Was here for lunch and got the Cubano sandwich, along with the soup special (cheddar and chorizo?). The soup was awesome. Complex and hearty, without being too rich. The sandwich was top notch too. Stopped here while on business. I sat at bar and thought about ordering off the Happy Hour menu but was hungry so I decided to go with regular menu items. Good spot, good food, nice surprise in Des Moines. First, the bar. Good service and very attentive, thanks Blake! I ordered the cheese plate with all 5 cheeses. I work in cheese industry and enjoy cheese so of course I had to order. The brief, verbal description of style of cheese (ex. Italian goat, sheep, etc) was fine since I probably have deeper knowledge of cheese varieties, but I would recommend if the staff isn't intimately knowledgeable of the cheese to have a printed sheet with brief description of variety, style, flavor notes and origin. Also, any description (verbal or written) should include flavor notes so people know what to expect especially with some more intense cheese (ex. intensely flavored soft ripened varieties, YUM for me, scary for others!). Just trying to be helpful. The kale salad was very good. I ordered scallops and was very happy with them, preparation was excellent. For dessert I ordered the "buckle", the crumb/cake topping was a bit undercooked in the center but edges were nicely browned and I enjoyed it. All in all a good spot. The food was passable. The portions are quite small for the price, not very good value. For the same price you can eat at Centro (also in Des Moines) but have larger portions, much much better food. We ordered the mussels and is seemed like all that was done was poor a can of tomato sauce onto the mussels, no flavor at all. The salmon was actually considerably good. Had my worst restaurant meal in 40 years there last night. The food was barely room temperature so I sent it back. It is the only 3rd or so meal I have ever sent back and I have been served some crappy food but not very often. I simply asked the waitstaff person to microwave it because the service was slow. When it came back it wasn't any hotter than the first time. In fact part of it was even colder. I told the wait staff person this when she asked but decided to eat it room temp because I was hungry. Never offered any accommodation. Left a generous tip but that's the last time I will ever eat their, in my opinion, overpriced and mediocre food accompanied by less than mediocre service. read more

In town for a visit, and lucky enough to be in DsM during Restaurant Week, I was excited to try Table 128. Maybe we were unfortunate in our choice of food, but everything tasted bland to us. I ordered a Lava Lamp cocktail which tasted more like a bad French 75 or strong g'n't with too much lime. Warm brussel sprouts appetizer was tasty but would benefit from crisping the sprouts. Corn fritters would have been better with more sauce, pickled stuff, something. I don't think I've eaten rillettes before without toast or something to spread them on, and that dish needed more pickled stuff, too. Steak for him and vegetable dish for me, bland. Dessert for him was a sweet corn brulee with an odd aftertaste, and with what looked like tomatoes in it. He said they were, but I didn't want to investigate. My zucchini cake was good but was overpowered by the ice cream topping. Our server M---y never checked on us, just put the plates on the table and brusquely left. I swear we're nice people and weren't rude! It was very odd and unwelcoming. To top it off, our courses were served a loooooong time apart. The meal took almost 2.5 hours. Overall, though I hate to give a small, independent place a bad review, with all the wonderful restaurants in this town, I'd try elsewhere next time. read more

I ordered the angry donuts and beet salad both dishes were amazing. Portions were plentiful and the price was fair; well worth the money. The restaurant provides top shelf gin and whiskey (junipero, aviation, dalwhinnie, balvenie) and the knowledgeable bartender can make a mean cocktail. Service was also on point; I was amazed at the subtle attentiveness. It was noticed that I was slowly eating the angry donut appetizer. I was asked if I would like to finish the angry donuts before the salad was brought out. Was nice not to feel rushed, was able to enjoy every bite. The food was delicious so good that I had to try the desert. I want disappointed. If you are in town this is a place that you should def visit. Well worth your time and money. read more

The atmosphere definitely makes this place stand out. It's a quaint little bistro nested in an area chalked mostly with chains and sports bars. They don't have a lot of taps but the bottle and drink selection overall is expansive. This has become one of my favorite places to take my wife on a date night in Des Moines. The food is consistently good, the service is really knowledgeable and friendly, and the cocktails are the best in town by far. I like that they constantly tweak and change their dinner and drink menu with the seasons. This lets the chefs and bartenders show off. We went there on a 2/30/16. A busy saturday night. I made the bone headed decision to just show up. They were full. Luckily there was a table next to the bar that we could sit at. My wife always tells me we need a reservation but I never think we do. I've always been able to get in when I've showed up. So it's nice to see that they're doing well. I ordered the Beef Stew. It was a reimagined version of it. The braised short ribs just melted in your mouth. Perfectly cooked, juicy and freakish flavors. The mash potatoes were silky smooth and the sauce that was on the side added the heartiness of a traditional stew. It also came with three small cooked carrots. Not much of a fan of cooked carrots. In fact, it's one of the few things I despise eating. I love the flavor it gives off in stews but I hate eating them. My wife ordered the Cioppino. It's salmon was in a tomato broth. I have never seen salmon cooked like this. It tasted like it was seared but it wasn't brown. It had a really light crunch to it while keeping the salmon's color. The dish also came with some delicious mussels, fingerling potatoes and a saffron aioli. My wife loved it. Said it was one of the best dishes there she's ever had. After dinner we ordered the bread pudding. It was served warm in a coffee cup with whipped cream on top. It was ok. Nothing great just ok. I've had way better desserts there before. Now for the cocktails. Really this is my favorite part about going there. To me Blake is the best mixologist in DSM and he's been doing it for years there. The first cocktail I had was the Midleton. It was really well balanced. It's Redbeast single-pot still whiskey, chia infused contratto, vermouth rosso, orange peel and orange bitters. The subtle chia and orange paired really well with the velvety whiskey. It was a smooth sipping cocktail that went down a little to fast. My second cocktail was the Aged Beauty. Tequila with dry curacao, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, salted sage-hone syrup, fennel garnish and a sugar salted pepper rim. It looked beautiful. I thought it was sweetly balanced. My wife really enjoyed the cocktail. The rim started you off on the adventure because when you see it you just expect salt and pepper. But the inclusion of something sweet added a different dimension to the cocktail. So in short if you're looking for a great place to get drinks and dinner go here. Amazing food & service. Been there for several dinners and not one thing to complain about. The menu is constantly changing, but there is always one selection for beef, chicken and seafood. The cheese plate is always a great start and specialty cocktail of the day is never a disappointment. If you haven't dined you must! Be warned, this will not be an inexpensive dinner.
