This is another restaurant recommended by our lodging host. It's small with a bar with a couple of seats in front and a small sunken dining room with 7-8 tables interestingly decorated with musical instruments. Nice atmosphere, feels very homey. We had the cod fish stew and pork chop. The fish is seriously tough - I've never had codfish this chewy before. Portugal is supposed to be famous for cod but I didn't know it's the salted kind. Taste is ok but the fish is inedible. The pork was also pretty tough and the fries that came with it was soggy and limp. Price is average. Service is decent. It seems pretty popular as a local hangout also one that gets recommended a lot to foreign visitors but I find it rather disappointing. read more

We chanced upon this restaurant, highly patronized by locals, as we were on our way to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace Gardens). Glad we did. I was focused on the bifanas that Portugal was known for. I skimmed the chalkboard out the door as we passed by and my hunger instincts were right. The restaurant was small and intimate seating was at par with eateries in the area. A lot of musical instruments and trinkets adorn the walls which made up for an interesting gaze fest as we waited for our food. Lunch rush was ongoing so we had to settle being sat at the bar. That's always a plus as we got to witness the buzzing crew efficiently feed the customers. We got 4 kinds of appetizers that our server recommended. They were all good but we liked the casserole baked dish the best. My wife and I shared a rice plate of the bifanas (spicy pork steak) with fries. For drinks, I got a bottled Compal juice while my wife got her afternoon macchiato. Our bill was a grand total of €17. I even corrected them as our bottle of water wasn't included in the chit. This place is always busy. We came in on a Thursday in June at around 7:30pm and we were turned away as they were full. We made reservation for the next day at 8pm so that we can for sure enjoy their food. We returned the next day, Friday, at 7:57pm, determined to try their food. There are even MORE people today -- sitting in the patio having a lot of beer and food from their fridge. We asked our waiter (I think he is the owner?) for recommendations, but he basically said all are good. Thanks for the lack of help! So we ended up ordering at 8:07pm and our beer (EUR1 for 20cL) came in at 8:09; while our meals arrived at 8:17pm and 8:25pm respectively. Taste, portion, price: - Pork shank (EUR 12) was good - full of salty flavour and it comes out tender. - Beef steak (EUR 9) was not good - lack flavour, lack tenderness (came out well done) and the cut was not good at all. Portion were good on both - you will be full from the protein, but more so on the potatoes and copious amount of olive oil. Overall, I would say it is great for Portugal's taste. Wasn't the greatest visit compared to other reviews. Maybe it was an off night. The place was authentic, local and friendly staff but food and wine left some things to be desired. Local ham pastry appetizer for €0.60 were fun. The veal estufada (veal stew) was a rather thick hunk of meat, more like a roast beef and a tad dry. The pork loin with potatoes was decent but main flavor was from coarse salt and was swimming in olive oil from the potatoes. €12 bottle of Portuguese Douro wine recommended by the waiter was not good - very fizzy almost like it was not completely fermented, more like a Lambrusco. This is my favorite place to have eaten in Porto. Completely unpretentious, and the menu changes daily. The dishes are prepared by amazing local (and likely family) chefs. The food is delicious! Wow what an amazing place. Small with only a few tables. But super friendly service and great food. Started with a 0.5L of their house white for 3 euros. Bright, fruit on the nose, hint of sweet in the mouth, crisp and refreshing. They bring beef croquettes to the table which are good and filling but they do charge 1 euro per that you eat. They otherwise have no appetizers on the menu. We started with a bowl of their vegetable soup 1.5 euros. Creamy in texture with a potato and cabbage flavor. Tastes better than it sounds. For entrees, 2 adults and 2 kids split 3: veal, pork tenderloins, and octopus rice. All so good and amazingly priced - 8 to 9 euros each! The veal was so tender and had a great flavor. The pork tenderloins were slightly firmer but also were full of flavor. The octopus rice was quite tasty. Almost soupy mix of rice, octopus and red beans. We passed on dessert but what they had displayed looked really good as well. You can't get more authentic Portuguese food than here. There were only 3 reviews of this place but each were so convincing that I had no choice. Tired to call them for reservations but no one answered but since they were only a minute walk from our Airbnb location we gave it a shot. This is a family-run business and momma is the boss. It is a small mom-and-pop restaurant with limited seating. One of the sons who tended the bar and reservations said they were completely booked for the night and we came at 6 pm. Being aggressive as I needed, was able to convince him to give us seating at the small bar. They open at 7 pm and close at midnight. By 7:15 pm since another reservation did not show, we were seated. Each night's menu is different. This night my family ordered beef steak, veal, cod, pork rib stew, and Panasonic especial (breaded pork patty with ham and cheese on Francesinha sauce. Of the 5 dishes, the veal and pork ribs were the best. Both meats were tender and had lots of flavor which were complimented by the potatoes and side vegetables. We also had a local red wine which went very well with the meats. Instead of ordering an individual dessert dish, the server customized a special to include a sampler of all their desserts into one plate - awesome!! We were very lucky to be seated tonight to be able to enjoy the local flavors due to the hospitality of the restaurant and its matriarch. As I was paying the tab, mom came to give us her appreciation and offered shots of her family made port. You can't get more gratitude than this. I highly recommend this place but they are becoming known and reservations are a must or you'll be declined. Also make sure you keep your reservations or they'll pass you within 10-15 minutes of your slot. They won't rush you so much joy your whole dining experience. read more

What a restaurant! This is the best place in Portugal the eat honest food. Herminia and her family will do their best to make you feel at home. The dishes are generous and really great. The menu changes every single day but you won't have lot of choices since Herminia cooks as if it is for her own family. You have to book a table since - by words of mouth - this place is slowly becoming THE place to have a great diner in Porto. I stayed 2 days in Porto and I came twice! And I'm not the only one - I could hear people around me saying "see you tomorrow Herminia!" This review is more than a year overdue. My wife and I arrived nearly two hours before closing on a random weekday back in November 2018 with another couple (US Tourists, kind of). The restaurant was packed. I asked for a table for four and was told there were none available. I had made the request in Portuguese (I'm a native speaker) thinking that'd give me an upper hand. Nope, sorry -no tables. The owner/manager explained that they only keeps fresh stuff in the kitchen and that they were 86'n dishes; hardly anything left to serve. I said, "don't worry about it, we'll take whatever you got." I ordered some wine for the group and drank outside the establishment, which has some tables outside along the street (typical taberna/cafe style). Anyways, we got seated shortly thereafter, had an amazing dinner, and made a new friend. We even went back several times during our 10-day stay. Nine months later, my wife and I had our first child. Simply the best restaurant in town. And simple is the word to define it. No fusions, no new cuisine, no BS, just real Portuguese food as my mother and her mother before used to make. For me, and this is very personal, it's like eating at home. Everything reminds me of the atmosphere I experienced while growing up and coming from an enormous family. The owners, senhor Victor (the front man), the wife dona Herminia (handles the kitchen), Pedro (takes care of the tables) and the rest of the family/staff are all amazingly nice and welcoming. If you go there a few times you'll be a part of their family. Senhor Victor loves to tell stories of when he was young, had a band and played the guitar. Dona Herminia likes to make sure that when you finish your meal that everything was good. Oh and she loves to speak French and she does it very well. As for Pedro, he likes to speak too but he's always so busy tending the tables that he doesn't have time to. Go early. Always go early or book in advance. It's always expected to be full with locals and tourists. You can always drink a super fresh Super Bock beer while waiting outside. Don't forget to try the Mousse au Chocolate or the Crème Brulé. Delicious traditional Portuguese food! They served us little sandwiches and empanadas right when we sat down. The vegetable soup was my favorite and was so big it could've been my main entree. We also ordered the pork cheek stew (not really a soupy stew) and pork shank. All the meat fell if the bone and was so tender. Service was great especially considering how busy they were.
