Merchants may ask for ID if they suspect fraud or for age verification as required by law, but they cannot have a blanket policy of making you show your ID as a condition of completing all sales. This store flagrantly ignores these core card network rules and forces you to surrender personal information unnecessarily. On top of this, if your purchase exceeds $100, they will split the charge into multiple smaller transactions without your knowledge or consent -- an explicit violation of Visa and Mastercard policies. This practice exposes you to extra fees, complicates billing and privacy, and can disqualify you from your credit card rewards or protections. Operating in a what the perceive to be an "underprivileged" neighborhood, this store evidently believes they can get away with such disrespectful and invasive treatment. They assume customers here won't understand or challenge these unfair and illegal practices. To make matters worse, demanding IDs and splitting charges puts your sensitive credit card and driver's license data into the hands of random employees -- a serious security risk.
