I don't live nearby so I'm not running in here to get a six pack (although the selection is damn good), but if you need beer in bulk, this is probably your best bet. After calling around to several distributors in the area, the keg prices at Brooklyn Beer & Soda seem to be better than most of their competitors, and that includes delivery (and ice if you need it). They've only got a few different types of kegs on hand, but they'll order pretty much anything you want if you give them enough notice. So have a party, and get a keg here. But if you don't finish it, I wouldn't recommend carrying the remainder home and setting it on your new rug, expecting your girlfriend to be pleased that you have beer for the week. Extremely disappointed with the service I received after visiting. Usually, this is my go to place for all occasions because they have everything. But after visiting today, I will never go again and I hope those thinking about shopping here will reconsider and take their business elsewhere. My sister and I stopped by today to pick up a simple 24-case of corona and tried asking for assistance when noticing the case I wanted was on the bottom with a few cases of beers on top. As a Customer Experience manager with experience of working both in retail & corporate, the last thing I would ever want to do is destroy anyone's retail space. So with that in mind, the first thing I did was ask for help so that I did not leave anything out of place. Luckily, I was able to locate someone who we soon found out was the owner of the establishment and when we pointed out what we wanted, the owner then replied "why don't you get something else? Why can't you get something else if it's all the same" and she pointed to a different case of 12-pack beer. We stated that we didn't want that one and were looking for a 24 pack and would willingly pay for it. She continued asking why we need that and for us to get something else. After realizing she wouldn't help us and seeing she already walked away we had to move all the cases of beers ourselves to retrieve the item we wanted. Once we got to the register, we were informing the cashier of the situation when the owner was heard behind us screaming telling us not to talk shit and complain about her because she is the owner and how we needed to get our lives together. This is not the type of service you should be giving fellow minorities who are simply trying to show support. Because of this, I will never shop here again and I'll be sure to pass this feedback along so people can find other businesses to support. read more

I actually had a very pleasant experience ordering a keg of Coors Light for my birthday party over the phone, but come delivery day everything went downhill. When they asked me when I needed it, I said anytime before 7pm, as that's when my guests would be arriving. So they had from 9am to 7pm and it was delivered an hour late. What's worse is that once it arrived it was foamy and skunky. I am used to kegs being a little bit foamy when they arrive, but it stayed foamy throughout the duration of the party and even into the following afternoon. Barely anyone drank from it, so the next day when I actually looked at the label on the side of the keg, I wasn't surprised. It expired almost three months ago. I called to politely express my dissatisfaction and was told super abruptly that the beer wasn't expired and that they simply "forgot to switch out the label". I asked why it was foamy, then, and they told me I needed to allow it to "sit for at least 24 hours so it can settle". That's literally not true lol... I also complained about it arriving late and she said, "see, this is why we don't like to give time windows for deliveries." I'm like ok so if you don't give a time window then when the hell am I to expect it?? Basically, they had every every BS excuse in the book each of the three times I called. I know they want me to just give up, so here I am writing a highly dis-satisfactory review to warn others about the unfortunate service at Brooklyn Beer & Soda. read more

You walk in here, and it's all BAM, that's a bunch of fucking beer. Big gigantic beers, little beers, little beers in boxes, and a whole load of chips. You want all of it. They have imported ones like Imperial from Costa Rica only 6.99 for a six-pack. They even have Alcohol Water. You don't want that though because you're not a dickhead. You can also get a pallet of Sparks for a reasonable amount! DON'T get a keg from here though. They only have pony kegs and they're really fucking expensive. Go to Cobble Heights on pacific for kegs. This place is retail, not for serious quantity beer drinkers from a keg. But the guys at the counter are really nice and like to talk about beer, because at the end of the day, you just wanna go home and have a beer, and they do too. Love this place. It's like the gates of heaven everytime I walk up to the main entrance and the doors automatically (albeit painfully slowly as I want to rush in and caress all of the beer cases). This place gets away with being awesome because it's not near a subway, which means if you want to buy beer for your restaurant in bulk or buy some craft beers, you're hoofing it to the Atlantic Center (a good 15 minutes away walking) before you find a way to get home. That said, as of July '11, this was the only place in all of New York you could find Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout, and though I haven't had a sip of it yet, I'm super excited to try it. And the rhaspberry wheat beer I got, and the Hooker Blonde* and ... well, I didn't keep going at that point, because it was a long walk home and I didn't have any desire to drop anything because it was too heavy. I remember reading about this place in Time Out New York and realizing, "Wow, I live pretty close to this place." That being said, I didn't go. In fact it took me months before I finally went. I don't remember why Ashley S. and I decided to go. I think we were just in search of [good] beer and said, "Hey I might know a place..." Loandbehold we come here and were kind of blown away. The selection was insane, in fact, a bit overwhelming. Thankfully, we knew what we wanted and were out pretty quickly. Despite the fact that this place looks like a toy store with beer, I wasn't too impressed. Something along the lines of a 4 stars. However, the second time I went, well, wow. One of the workers helped us over at the growler section. He answered our questions and let us sample several of the beers on tap. He was very knowledgeable, patient and courteous. Both Ashley S. and I were extremely pleased. I suppose the only fault we have with this place is the fact that it closes so early on Sundays (6pm). Growlers galore! This excellent store has eight taps on the wall (with more apparently on the way), pouring local and regional microbrews that aren't available in bottles. Alex (the owner, I think) is an unpretentious and friendly beer enthusiast, who clearly takes pleasure in finding, and sharing, interesting brews and news with his customers. As noted elsewhere, the store is clean, the prices are fair, the clerks are friendly, and the beer selection is extensive. When I was last in there buying a couple of growlers, I noticed that they had some very good specials on seasonal microbrews that were being rotated out of stock for the year - a rarity in NY beer stores - so I bought a case of still perfectly fresh SN Celebration Ale. Their prices are always great and being in Crown Heights/Flatbush area, they're always well stocked with West-Indian sodas and drinks. This is my go-to beer store. Why? I live like 5 blocks away. Still though I came here a few times before moving into the area. The people working here are really friendly but not that knowledgeable about beer except for the owners (husband and wife). They're awesome and are always willing to hold stuff for you within reason (especially if they know you). Still the rest of the staff always tries their best which is rare among beer stores nowadays. Don't expect any frills otherwise as the place is literally a warehouse. The word here is selection. They recently took over the adjacent store front (awning is still up) just to expand further. If you want to buy beer in bulk around this area, this is where you should get it as their prices tend to be lower. On other items their pricing can be uneven but generally competitive. Either way if you're looking for something specific they'll tend to have it; if not, they actually will try and order it if you ask. If there's a beer that hits NYC, in all likelihood they will get it at some point. The only negatives here are that they do gouge a bit on some rarities (ex. Firestone Walker limited releases), there are some items that sit out for awhile (check dates, this can work in your favor sometimes though), and some of the stock sits where there is a bit too much sunlight for my tastes. These are significant drawbacks but in light of the pluses Brooklyn Beer still ends up being a great place in my opinion. Also they have Mexican Coke and Manhattan Special in bulk. this place is like the disneyland of beer. They've got everything from cheapo beer to super fancy obscure microbrews, so if you are looking for it there's a good chance they have it. At the least, you will always be able to find something that suits your particular tastes on any given day. Also, you can get a case of beer for 10.99 here. That's like 46 cents per can. There isn't much to say about Brooklyn Beer and Soda that is not already evident by it's name. It's in Brooklyn and it sells beer and soda. But by God, does it sell a lot of beer--and not just cheap 36 racks of Bud and BudLight (which have become a party staple for me) but also very hard to find imports--including two varieties of my favorite English beer, Fuller's London Pride and a Guatemalan beer called Gallo that caused my roommate to slap me across the face he was so excited. This place is great. Their beer selection is diverse, and has various prices. If you need pretty much any kind of beer, they're likely to have it. The reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5, is because they really need more refrigerators. If you're looking for IPAs in the summer, it's really best to either buy something that's in the fridge and take a chance, or go elsewhere. I've purchased beers that were stored too hot, and spoiled. This is not an issue in the winter, as the whole place is kept barely above 40° F. In sum: 3 stars in summer, 5 when its cold out. Average of 4 stars. read more

Brooklyn Beer & Soda sells Calabaza Blanca - a fruity white ale, from the Jolly Pumpkin company based in Detroit. The only other place I have drank this beer is at Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club in DC, and the only other place I bought it was at the Greene Grape general store. Luckily, BBS has such a huge selection of beers that I found exactly what I needed for my New Years Eve party. No champagne? I got sparkling cider from France. No red wine? Picked up a Cassis Lambic that went perfectly with the cheese I was serving. This place truly has everything in the beer/soda variety that your little heart could desire. There's a method to the madness in terms of layout as well, so don't be too overwhelmed by the size of the place. Brooklyn Beer & Soda is a local, well-kept secret in Prospect Heights. It's at least a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest subway; suffice to say, this place doesn't get a lot of foot traffic from tourists across the river. A hybrid between your well-stocked bodega and your specialty craft-beer store, Brooklyn Beer & Soda reminds me of a suburban Costco. Pallets of well-known domestic brands (Coors, Bud, Natural Light) are lined up in pretty little rows on the left hand side of the store; decent East and West Coast domestic brews (Saranac, Smuttynose) guard the center; imports sold by the big multinational beer companies under the guise of craft beer (Grolsch, Stella Artois) flank the right. But if you're not a frat brother or someone who deludes themselves into having good taste in beer, the good sh*t is in the fridge on the far left and on the shelf behind the front counter. Highlights include the entire range of Unibroue (North America's finest brewery), big bottle formats of Belgium lambics and "Grand Cru" ales (Cantillon, Fantome, Girardin, Oud Beersel), and obscure domestic labels that one would struggle to find in any retail store. They also have a decent selection of 10-12 beers on draft that you can carry out in a 32 or 64 oz. growler format. I have no problem with the service at Brooklyn Beer & Soda (I know what I want, and how to get it), but I could see someone being frustrated by the lack of beer knowledge among the staff. This is not Bierkraft: the staff doesn't look like it literally eats, sleeps, brews, and drinks beer. As a side note, they do stock a fine range of obscure carbonated sodas (Ting, Manhattan Espresso Coffee Soda), malt liquors in 40 oz formats, as well as most of the wine (cooler) portfolio of Bartles & James. Closer to a 4.5 ranking. This is possibly the best beer selection in Brooklyn- Craft and Imports. My only complaint is the price- some of the beers I can get in Manhattan for cheaper and that's not cool. However, in terms of selection this place is almost unrivaled. They have everything- from the watered down American piss beer to the absolute Ratebeer 100 Belgian and Russian Imperials. They even have some rare bottles on sale as singles- stuff like Brooklyn Monster from 2012+13 and the elusive Samuel Smith Yorkshire Stingo (which at $16 for a pint bottle is absurd) and I think they are the only place to carry this beer. There are lots of local taps for the growler lovers, that's not really my thing but they have 20 taps I think so have fun. The staff is extremely nice, most of them are bilingual (Spanish/English) and it's nice to be able to come in and speak Spanish with them. I used to hit them up pretty frequently at the old location on Washington Ave, now home to the awesome new Prospect Heights Beer Works. During that time I became suspicious of them and my suspicions were confirmed today. When seeking 21st amendment Hell or High Watermelon at the ending weeks last summer when it had began to become extremely hard to find, I found some there. Suspiciously, the cans featured a design that had been abandoned at least 4 months prior. Several months later, in early November a friend came over with a six pack of the stuff he had found there, despite the fact that the brewery doesn't produce any past early September. They tasted skunky on both occasions more so the second. Something fishy. Today I came by to grab some when Prospect Beer Works was out, at least thru the next week or so they said, when they may be getting the last possible shipment of the year. Well they had some and I bought a case's worth. I only wish I had remembered before paying that 21st Amendment began posting the date of production on each six pack outer box this year, likely to discourage the type of shady hoarding this place practices. When I remembered and checked, the date revealed the beers were produced in early April, every single six pack of em. Beer is the opposite of wine, the fresher the better and this practice is just not cool at all. They obviously bulk up on stuff early saving beer for when they inevitably run out later in the season and selling it way past the point of freshness. Now I am stuck with all these beers that just don't taste fresh at all, bordering on straight up skunky again. Although this is antidotal evidence specific to this one beer, I am sure they do not limit the deceitful practice to it alone. read more

Everything went fine with the pickup and delivery, but it's over a month later, I've called three times, and thus far they've only reimbursed me for 1/3rd of my deposit.
