What an anti-climatic walk up the steps of the Diggers. Expecting to find an asian restaurant, we…read morewere greeted instead by GINORMOUS mexican hats and burritos. Despite our major craving for some sizzling beef, we settled on Cantina's and surprisingly, it was ok. The GenY (or is it the "I "Gen?) staff were friendly enough and our waiter was the sweetest kid, he even swapped me one of those said ginormous Mexican hats for my phone to take a pic of us. Their servings are fairly substantial and in fact, I wasn't able to finish off my dish - I had the naked Burrito - normal chicken burrito minus the tortillas and the cheese sauce (there's just something about those two words placed together that conjures up all sorts of nastiness in my head). They have the tiniest plates for all this food, the salsa and cheese sauce (ewww) are in little bowls on the plate, the corn on the cob, the rice and the chicken all precariously placed right to the edge of this narrow plate - so of course, you can imagine the filth left when our plates were cleared. The service is what you'd expect from a very young crew - not much conversational skill apart from LOL, totes and hashtag (just quietly, rather entertaining), clearing plates resulted in a fork backflipping taking with it some rice which ended up all over a friend and the bill given was for the wrong table - all in all though, a fun night given we had dined a little too well care of the 3 jugs of sangria #fittinginwiththekids

Two more burrito challenges have been added since AND a dessert one. Finish and get your picture on the wall. I shared Amarillo fries to start. Curly fries with a cheese sauce. Didn't look like much sauce at first but it had gone to the bottom making most of the chips underneath soggy, which was a shame. The crunchy ones on top dusted with seasoning were yummy. My enchiladas were a decent serving with Cajun spiced corn on the cob and fragrant rice that was more rice than fragrant. Yellow rice is not fragrant if it tastes the same as normal white rice. $6 for a small side serving of avocado was too expensive. I tried my partners nachos but the beef topping tasted... manufactured. Like Mexican or bean soup from a can. The service was fast. We couldn't book for two people. They only take group bookings. Joining the Wests Group that evening gave us a 10% discount.

The Big Ass Burrito Challenge is cool, even though you don't get any reward for finishing something that most likely cost them $2 in wholesale rice, but is awesome nevertheless. Recommended simple place to go for Mexican in Newcastle if you don't mind walking through miles of sad people on pokies. They did seat us under a staircase and it was annoying hearing the heavy footsteps stomping up and down throughout dinner service. The food was very good to stellar! As others have mentioned, the Tacos are King here. Tartare Tacos are amazing, and we loved the Salmon Civiche and the carnitas tacos, as well. Flathead Civiche was delicious, Brussels Sprouts were super tasty, and we also enjoyed the twice cooked Pork Belly. Not so good was the Pato Ahumado. The mole was really tasty but not enough, and the breast was really tough and fatty, plus no proper cutlery provided. Really disappointing, as we couldn't eat or enjoy it and it was like we just threw $72 away. While I did appreciate their coursing, we did wait for long periods between. Cocktails were good, as was a glass of wine, but pours are very light. Recommended, for sure. Avoid the duck.

The tacos were amazing!! The chips and dip were also very good and had a nice balance of flavor. Was something unique that I had not tried before. Everything tasted high quality with a large depth of flavor. Would highly recommend!

She remained friendly, bubbly and more than helpful. Offering us a smaller table thinking they had cancelled. Probably didn't want to waste the large table but we also did look a bit lonely sitting their nearly empty. Again staff in general were polite in moving us on as the last table and having gone beyond their closing time of 9:30pm. Also having to tell one of our guests that the kitchen had closed (they wanted dessert), whilst I lowered my head in annoyance at the request. I don't know if they always split bills but after a membership card was presented for the 10% discount they proceeded to take more of their time to accomodate this. Now to the food. Arriving to check in our reservation, we were passed by 2 enormous trays of food that I later found out were sharing platters. One ordered at our own table consisting of rib eye steak, ribs and sides. Bring your hunger game! A semi seafood platter also available. My partner and I ordered the 10oz rib eye (medium as standard) with saloon sauce for him and chipotle bernaise for me. The steak looked.... different. Putting it down to the slow cooked process? Tasted amazing regardless. But be warned, the steaks appear to be coated or dry rubbed with chilli flakes. I didn't mind it at all but my partner said his mouth was on fire. I tried his and disagreed strongly. Maybe his threshold was low that night. The side of chips were well seasoned and it was nice to have veggies included over salad. If I had to be negative I'd say the Texas toast could have been done better. Dry due to the thickness and needed more garlic flavour. Already have them in mind for a return trip for my birthday.
