It was late in the day and we didn't have a whole lot of time left before we would need to be home again for a family dinner. That's when I suddenly remembered about King's Market. We hadn't gone shopping there for ages but they have a great selection of Asian foods and are so much closer to our home than T&T Supermarket, which is our usual "go to" for Asian foods. While King's Market may be smaller in name, it's actually a fairly good sized market with several different rooms to shop in. Veggies, fruit, meat, seafood, frozen foods, Asian candies...they are well stocked and well worth checking out for any of your basic needs. I found the White Rabbit candies I was searching for, and also bought a box of Agar Agar powder. Not sure what I'm going to use the Agar Agar powder for, but it's supposed to be a Vegan alternative for gelatin and I've been curious about it for quite some time. Will have to do some research to see how I can make use of it. I'm so happy to have found it at King's Market because even in a regular supermarket, I'm not sure which aisle I might have found it in, or even if I would have found it at all. Parking is plentiful in the lot in the front (back?) of the building, as well as on the street. The building clearly used to be 3 different businesses, as the layout is really bizarre. There are 3 large "rooms", joined by a corridor. To be honest, this place is probably quite the fire hazard to newcomers. Thank goodness somebody had the sense to stick a large map on the wall. Some doorways between the sections would be nice. With that out of the way, there are 3 sections. Product, meat/aquarium (yes, aquarium), and dried goods. Pricing is in line with other places. The place is quite popular with locals, which tells you everything you need to know. As with other similar businesses, there is a hot food section as well. I picked up some takeout and it was mediocre. Does the job, but nothing special. I imagine this place serves the local market quite well. Wouldn't make a special trip out, but good to know the place exists.

It's been a very long time since I last stepped foot in this place so maybe it's just my faulty memory, but it really did seem like they had expanded their offerings at this place. The fried foods were what really stood out for me. I don't recall this being here at all. It took a lot of restraint for me to not buy anything from here. Deep fried squid, deep fried vegetables, deep fried seaweed roll, tornado potato...etc. They all looked so tempting. I grabbed a couple boxes of Kimbap (One Burdock Kimbap and a Fried Gourd Kimbap) plus a Rice drink that was on sale for $1.99. They also had some Triangular Maki (Onigiri) for sale. No Vegetarian flavors. Tuna was the only flavor I could have eaten since I'm Pescatarian. I decided to stick with the Vegetarian Kimbaps though. Upon first glance, I thought the rice drink was made just from rice milk and that it would be dairy free. It was only when I got home that I read the ingredients label and realized that there was actually some milk in it. Not a problem for me, but for anyone who has lactose intolerance...be sure to check ingredient labels always. Anyways, this Rice drink was Sweet Potato flavored. Ever had a Sweet Potato flavored drink? I thought it sounded like a really interesting flavor, and of course...being on sale, that was extra incentive to try something new. I shared it with my daughter. I think she wasn't too impressed with it. Personally, I loved it. It really did taste like sweet potato. I found that quite impressive. This is a great place to stop for quick and tasty take out foods, and interesting drinks like the Sweet Potato Rice drink I tried. Their bakery section looked very tempting as well.

One thing to make note of is whatever you buy here to make sure you check the expiry date. They sell items that you can't get elsewhere. For example the ABC Kecap Manis, salted caramel toast bread and etc. They even have noodles that I can't even get at T&T. They have free parking at the back of the store. The store is somewhat small and the isles can be a bit narrow. They do have an area for asian bbq. Prices are pretty good. Too bad they are located close to where I live or else I would vist Nanyang more frequent.

In my visit I purchased a variety of snack and sauce packets that I haven't seen else where. They even have bbq pork section selling bbq pork and duck. The market definitely appeared to carry a wide and fantastic selection of fresh and frozen, fish and seafood products. My interest was sure peaked by this encounter, to head back soon for a closer look, with some shopping in mind. For me, it will be their frozen products that especially receive my attention when I return. I like to have some on hand, and they certainly have a fine selection to see and choose from. I bought a Cooked Salmon Onigiri for my daughter and a Cream Cheese Unagi Onigiri for myself. They had some boxes of interesting ramen noodles on display. Vegetable Ramen noodles and they appeared to be in all sorts of different colours. I was so intrigued by this. I gotta say, they do carry some interesting selection at Sungiven Foods. Couldn't resist so I bought a box and brought it home. The Onigiri was pretty good. I didn't really taste much cream cheese but that was a plus for me as it was really the Unagi filling that I was more interested in, and I could taste plenty of Unagi in my Onigiri. Oh, and I stopped by the Suntea stall to grab a Milk Tea because on the first and last day of each month, Suntea members can buy a large Milk Tea for $3.99 and it happened to be the first day of the month. It was filled with Mango and a little chocolate cream inside, Mango topping was very sweet and delicious. Overall, It was very good item. Dough needs to be more flaky, crispy and buttery.
