His supportive approach has led to solid improvements in my daughter's calculation abilities, confidence, and test scores! In the beginning I wasn't expecting much I figured it would just be minimal help. I was so wrong ! The staff is so nice and the lesson plans are catered to each child. My daughters have been coming here for a few months for reading. They are both a little behind so we decided this summer to try out Sylvan. The things we liked included: - both girls liked coming which was a relief. - both girls felt that they learned something when they came. (Not too easy or too hard, just right) - loved the token system to earn prizes The things we didn't love too much: - it is expensive, even with a discount so for two kids it adds up quickly - this is not one on one tutoring but more like 4:1 so for the price I felt like that was really high. - you have to go a minimum of twice a week and they really push for at least 4 times a week which seems excessive. Overall, I believe this can be a great program if you are trying to get your child to state standards but you will be paying for it in time and money read more

Let me start by saying we love Sylvan! My daughter has been coming to Sylvan since March of 2020 and has made significant progress. During Covid she was attending tutoring online with Sylvan which was great (and I appreciated that they offered that) but now that everything is open again she is back in center and she loves it and looks forward to it. I couldn't be more happy with my experience at Sylvan Learning Center of Long Beach. My boyfriend used to bring his 2 sons to Sylvan many years ago. He told me all about Sylvan and what they could do for my 6 year old son. My son goes to school for in person learning and I work about 45-50 hours a week. Needless to say, I don't have the time to put into the packet of homework for my son after school everyday and I was very concerned my son would fall behind in school because of this. My boyfriend told me to go into the nearest center and give it a try. Long story short, I met the very nice and understanding director, Alex, who explained the program to me in full detail. This center will tutor your child and cater to the areas where they need help the most. With my son, they help him do homework first and then dive into the program studies. Even though this isn't the most common way they do things, they are willing to help me out as a single mother her works extremely hard and worries about her son's education and social skills all the time. Sylvan certainly saved me. My son has been scoring average and above average on ALL assessments done at his school. I couldn't be happier! We absolutely love Sylvan. My son like many kids has been struggling with distance learning and has been less and less excited about school. I was starting to fear that he would lose his love for learning so I brought him to Sylvan. He loves the staff there and they clearly love him back. Both of my kids now attend Sylvan Learning after seeing what a difference it makes! Although we had discussed getting extra tutoring to fill in the cracks of public education, and set our kids up for success, we ended up having a rough year with inadequate instruction with our daughter, which led us to Sylvan. Sylvan has done more than just fill in the cracks! Their tutoring program (computerized assessment and detailed plan to build academic levels) has offered my kids a better path to learning and enjoying their school work. The staff at Sylvan works with us in every way to make sure that we are happy. They have recommended more hours of tutoring a week than were possible for us, but they also explained that the minimum will also get us good results over a longer period, of course. We met them in the middle. My kids walk out of the center happy and with great prizes that give them the incentive to work harder. Mrs. Alex, Ms. Morgan and the staff really want to see all their students succeed and also seem to have a magic formula that works, if you give it a chance. My daughter went from struggling with reading to the highest reading group this year. She is so proud of her achievement and feels special to be doing independent "research" in class (reading to learn), while her peers are still reading aloud to find strategies to learn to read! Now we have switched to the math based program to give her more support and eventually give her an edge in math! My little one has picked up reading strategies faster than I thought possible! He is just learning to read, but we didn't see huge progress in kindergarten. Putting words together was difficult for him. I would like to give a review in particularly regarding the services they plan to provide during the upcoming academic year. This is an expensive place. Hands-down it is expensive. And part of that is because they have set aside teachers educating and taking care of children. That is great. I consider the service when I had suspected that one of my children was behind in school considering the pandemic. I paid for the evaluation and it turned out that my child was not behind in school in spite of what happened with the lack of schooling last year. I continue to receive emails and text from the manager of the facility, Alex. The last exchange I received was incredibly rude. I have two children and both their father and myself are essential workers. I simply calculated the figure that it would cost to have two children Educated/supervised from 8 to 2 each day. It turned out to be a number that I could not afford. I respect that. I respect that this place caters to a certain demographic, most of whom are in a very high socioeconomic status. I could not pay two to $4000 to have my students educated/supervised by "real teachers quote. The owner was very rude and she sent me an email that stated that w "our programs are conducted by real teachers." I'm sorry. As in the essential worker, I want real teachers to teach my children at school. I don't need to pay for them offsite at a Learning For Sylvie. I thought that her customer service style was incredibly rude and passive aggressive. I can't afford it and I can tell you that a large population of Long Beach also cannot. I need somebody who will come facilitate my students learning, and go on their way. I want real teachers to educate my children at school. Her customer service was lousy and I will not revisit this facility. They are a business first and foremost most. Do not get it twisted.I respect that they have a fee that I cannot afford. What I had difficulty with with her tone and stating "Well find me another program that has real teachers working there." Extremely rude and unprofessional and it sounds like somebody who is hurting for business. I will not patronize this business and I suggest that if you are somewhat coming from a middle-class background, my husband and I each make approximately $100,000 a year, It's really absurd and ridiculous to consider a service like this. She was very rude when I told her about my objections. Go somewhere else. I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist and I can tell you that this is a business, not an educational resource. read more

We are fortunate to have benefited from a long relationship with Sylvan. Our daughter is a high achiever and excels with small group and even 1:1 instruction, which is available @ Sylvan. Our monthly meeting with Ms.Amy includes a discussion about our daughter's progress, homework, and schoolwork! We are lucky that our daughter knows and likes all of the Sylvan staff . Sylvan required an assessment test to determine the academic level of my son. The fee was 99 dollars which I had no problem with initially. While my son took the test, the director spoke to me about the fee structure clarifying the $60 dollar an hour tutoring sessions are not one on one, but 3 students to one instructor. She suggested tutoring packages costing thousands of dollars. Then I find out the assessment is the STAR test my son had taken in school a month earlier. I could have given them his current test results. What a waste of time and money. The whole experience was very disappointing. I knew I wouldn't be enrolling my son there, so just ate the $99 cost of the assessment. Also, there were small flyers in the lobby awarding tutoring points for doing a Yelp review, so be careful. read more

Our son has been attending Sylvan since this summer, starting off initially with just virtual tutoring and then alternating with in-person at the center, and so far we are very happy with the program. The staff has been extremely flexible with schedule/location changes with us and I can't thank them enough for that, especially during these times when I have had to rearrange his lessons based on my own work-from-home responsibilities. Being that some of the lessons have been from home, I've actually been able to witness the progress he's been making in reading and am very pleased. Since he goes to a dual immersion school, he definitely did not have a strong English reading foundation, so hearing him grasp some of the concepts so quickly is pretty neat. And now given that the 2020/2021 school year will be remote for at least the first half of the year, we feel very confident in our decision to enroll him in Sylvan because I know he will continue to get the support he needs to fill in the gaps in both reading and math. read more

I am hoping that what I experienced is a fluke, but I am posting in case anyone else experiences this so they are aware. I took my daughter there (she will begin 3rd grade in the fall) to get enrichment courses to hopefully maintain the skills that she has over the summer. She didn't have too much trouble in 2nd grade and passed with mostly 3's. Come time to go over the assessment with the director, she tells me that my daughter is in the 10th percentile, and needs major intervention to get to grade level. When I looked at the results myself, they had her as entering 4th grade in the Fall. The results were making her appear lower than she really was. They gave her the wrong assessment for her age, thus making her seem like she was in the 10th percentile. When I asked her to recalculate the scores I was told, "We can't do that because it is done on a computer". I understand mistakes happen, as I am also in a similar field that deals with standard scores, percentiles, etc. However, at the practice that I own, this is where I would stop the meeting and 1: reschedule after recalculating the scores and/or 2: give the correct test/scores at no charge. This was not offered to me. Instead what was suggested was 150 hours of intervention for reading and 120 hours of intervention for math by September. She scored 2nd grade, 4th month, and 2nd grade 6 month respectively. Keep in mind she is currently 2nd grade, 9 months. Along with her recommendation, I was given an application for a loan. A LOAN. For recommendations that were based on false scores. I wrote an email to the director which has not yet been followed up. So I paid $49. For nothing. read more
