Where do I even begin? My daughter came to me approximately 5 months ago - towards the end of her 6th grade year. She informed me that she was struggling with math and needed help. I looked up many tutoring centers in the area and decided on CEC. I signed her up for AST twice a week. Within two weeks she was starting to get it and even got an 85% on her math test - which before she averaged 70%. This review has been LONG overdue. Our daughter is currently in the 5th grade but she started here in California Educational Centers last year as a 4th grader. With the help of her wonderful teacher, Ms. Eileen, our daughter went from second to third grade reading level up to almost a 5th grade reading level in 1 year. As like most parents, I struggled to help teach our daughter common core. With the expertise of Ms. Eileen, our daughter started grasping the concepts given to her in her math classes. Our daughter is definitely up to par, if not slightly ahead of her fellow classmates. We've seen the growth and progression in her work. My son has only been at CEC tutoring for about 1.5 months. So far so good. He has changed his attitude towards learning. He seems to be much more focused in school, based on what his teacher at his elementary school is indicating to me. His instructor, Ms. Eileen, is very thorough. My son always comes home with his homework complete and the concepts he is learning at school is reviewed in detail with Ms. Eileen. If there is a test in class, his instructor hones in and focuses on reviewing and preparing him for the test. In addition to reviewing for the test, she still reviews other subjects/concepts he's learning in school that week. The learning environment is excellent. The tutoring class sizes are very small, allowing for more of a personalized learning experience. Overall, my son and I have had a positive experience. The entire center is great. I was a student whose grades were inconsistent because I did not do my homework in a high-performing school district. I was having trouble mainly in English Language Arts since I used to think it was not interesting enough. In class, I would not pay attention to the teacher as I should have, did not understand the concepts taught in class, and was not motivated in doing my homework. My parents were upset that I did not meet their expectations for exceptional grades. We did not know what to do until my mother suggested tutoring. At first, I was strongly against it because I did not want to be at a place that is much like school. My mom told me to just try and that California Educational Centers would help me excel in school. During my tutoring sessions, the staff helped me by telling me how to improve in school. The first time that I met Ofie, we discussed how I thought of school and my study habits. She then explained a strategy for studying such as tackling my hardest homework in my least favorite subject first and then those that were the easiest. I had never liked to do homework but with a friendly staff around me, I was more motivated to do my work. I had also learned one technique that made me understand History in an easier way. I learned to ask five different questions to comprehend key historic events better. Furthermore, I improved my grades by getting one-on-one assistance from the tutors. One tutor, Mr. William, would help me with my homework by explaining it in a clear way. He also would give me Math worksheets that allowed me to understand and practice the difficult content, and prepare for my tests. My current tutor, Ms. Kathryn, is teaching me how to write effectively by learning the different types of writing and the specific literary elements and rhetorical devices that go into each genre. This tutoring center has helped me with my grades tremendously. I completed 7th grade as a straight-A student and was also ranked number 1 out of 298 students. In 8th grade, I again had straight A's and ranked number 1 out of 304 students. In the past, I was not motivated to do my homework, but then the staff encouraged me and told me that a person cannot go anywhere in life without doing hard work. Beyond any doubt, this is the best after school program in the area. My son was enrolled in two other programs nearby and after attending these other programs, he'd return with missing work or incorrect solutions. Apparently the teenagers at these other programs were more involved in playing games and hanging out. Once he went to CEC, things took a turn for the better. My 10-year-old child goes to CEC. My daughter has had difficulty in school since first grade, especially with reading comprehension. She has been in RSP for almost 3 years now. How we came to CEC is nothing short of a blessing. I was looking for a place where my daughter wouldn't be bored, in an atmosphere that would support her needs, yet keep her wanting to learn more. We had tried those other places where they give the same workbooks to take home until you finally master them (through repetition), but how easily she got bored and didn't want to go. As I got frustrated that they weren't doing anything to kindle her desire to go back and "learn", my husband and I decided she needed something different. She had a tutor which was great, until her tutor got married and moved. I've asked around, called a few from Yelp, but the fit just didn't seem right. While exploring Yelp more, I came across CEC. Impressed by what people had written, I called, spoke with Ofie, and brought my daughter with me to the first meeting. It's been about a school-year since that first meeting and my daughter is still there. She has improved immensely. Her RSP time was cut down from 45 minutes daily to 30 minutes daily. That's huge considering she had been on 45 minutes daily since 2nd grade. Last school year, she wasn't meeting her benchmarks and was held back one grade. This school year, she's meeting and surpassing all her benchmarks and moving to the next grade. But what we notice most about her, is her confidence has grown. I am the mother of a current 7th grader at Whitney. In preparing my child for the entrance exam for Whitney I scoured the internet and came across CEC. I called and enrolled my child. I am happy to say that my child got accepted at Whitney. Initially my daughter did not want any help but after a few short semi-private sessions with Christina, (A graduate student in medical school for micro neural biology) we could tell she was doing better. I am so happy that my kids are in CEC. From the first day the office staff were welcoming especially Ms. Ofie who explained the program in detail to our family.
