The busiest restaurant in town, chockful of locals. Our waitress forgot about our order, but it was really busy and she was very apologetic--she even offered a free doughnut. Great pasties, and I came back the next day for doughnuts and coffee, both of which were top notch. read more

We just had lunch there. I wanted to love it as online I heard nothing but positive things. It was honestly the worst experience of my life. We arrived and got sat. We got beverages and didn't get an order taken. We sat with menus waiting and our server got a large table minutes later. They got the large table drinks and took their food order. It was enough time for one drink to be entirely empty and placed by the edge of the table. No one offered to fill the cup. Finally, a girl server came over to take our order and we were advised the other guy was training. That's all fine and dandy, but then the other servers should be following up or he should be shadowing to see how things are done. My daughter finally walked up to a server and physically asked for a refill. Not once our entire visit when a cup was empty were we asked if we wanted a refill. We ordered an appetizer and I watched it sit in the window for over ten minutes. It came with all of our food, except my husbands order was forgotten. The kids popcorn chicken looked pathetically small. We frequent restaurants and this is not acceptable. There was about ten fries and five tiny popcorn chickens like it was the end of the bag. My husband was livid at this time and it only got worse. His cup was empty and sat empty for ten minutes until he walked to the bathroom to get water as all the servers were chatting. The restaurant was not busy by any means. We got our check and we were charged for cheese curds which we never ordered. I had to wait for our slip to be adjusted. I am a server myself and I try to be very lenient with training people, but overall everything about this service was horrifying. We left the restaurant and went to a local business and actually got to chatting the owner and they said recently they've had terrible service as well. I'd be addressing internal service and training. Leaving the new guy to fend for himself and not filling drinks for them or running food for another server when it's sitting there is rude. Help one another. Repeat customers are what pay your bills. When you're losing the locals as well, there's issues. Cute little local vibe, but other than that, we were highly disappointed. read more

Syl's offers an amazing breakfast! I had the pot roast skillet, and it was SO tasty. Flat, salty, tender pot roast - doesn't get better. Syl's is a hometown diner, elevated. Lots to choose from on the menu, and I don't think you can go wrong with any of it. If I had one comment, I wish the menu were more descriptive. There were no ingredients listed, just 'fiesta skillet, California skillet' - I had to ask what was in each item. At the end of the day, it's all good - so just point and order! read more

We stopped here for dinner during a camping trip and we're absolutely blown away! Everything we had was fantastic! The pepperoni stuffed breadsticks are deliciously cravable, the fried chicken and mashed with gravy were just like grandma always made. We ate until we were stuffed! As a tourist traveling Michigan, I am absolutely pleased with our choice to stop here for a quick breakfast. It's a newly renovated, stylish and quaint restaurant in downtown Ontonagon, MI. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for you to enjoy, just minutes away from Lake Superior. I ordered the cinnamon swirl French toast and I'm telling you, it was BURSTING with flavor! I was honestly not expecting it to be this delicious. The bacon was cooked to perfection, and sadly a lot of restaurants can't cook bacon to save their lives. Ha. Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and we were immediately seated (were told to sit wherever we'd like). The service was quick and friendly. Syl's has a wide section of breakfast (served all-day) and lunch/dinner options. The bbq bacon cheeseburger, turkey club on wild rice cranberry bread, curly fries and beer battered fries were all very tasty! Stopped here in May, and then again in October, and it was spectacular both times! The food is cooked so perfectly, the portion sizes are generous, and the staff is friendly. I tried the breakfast a few months ago, and the lunch this time, and it was so good both times. Worth going out of the way to eat if you're anywhere around the Porcupine's. read more

Syl's burger- "hella rad", loved it, could taste all the flavors Beer batter fries- so good, loved the upgrade, extra crispy Bacon cheeseburger- "best burger ever", jsyk onions are raw, perfect with shake Regular fries- salty and potatoey, honestly just so good Salad with Italian dressing- normal but really like the dressing, it's the thick kind Mushroom and cheeseburger- delicious and one of the best burgers I ever had, great ratios, loved the sauce Shakes- Oreo has a crazy amount of oreos and is delicious and the Chocolate is pure chocolate amazingness. What a great evening my family and I enjoyed at Syl's. To be honest, there isn't much around but that's okay. Even if there were plenty of choices, this is where you want to eat dinner. I met the owner and we had a great conversation. You can tell she pours her heart and soul into keeping a quality restaurant going. People even call her restaurant and ask questions like it's the Chamber of Commerce! They might as well be. What a gem in Ontonagon and we'll definitely come back when we're up this way again. Thankful to find a restaurant for breakfast on a rainy morning while camping near here in the Porkies recently. We had a party of nine, and the table was available but due to staffing we couldn't sit at it for a while. And then it took a while to get It wiped off, after it already had taken a while to be able to place a drink order...you get the idea. The service in general is what gives this three stars - the food was pretty good! It's a small town, so they just may not be able to staff it so plan accordingly; I personally would still go back. It was well over an hour before getting our food, and I was so hungry that I didn't snap many pictures - but check out my kiddo and his gigantic pancakes! A couple of highlights - it was 10:30 and we could get breakfast or lunch which was cool. Everything was really tasty and the homemade bread was excellent. I don't understand all of the great reviews. The menu was 'ehh.' I went with a straightforward burger and fries. It's started off so great!... The bun looked light and delicious, the tomato and fancy lettuce bright and crisp... then they ruin it all by putting a manufactured frozen meat patty on it. Dumb. The service was great. The waitress was very accommodating when I came in at 8:30 (they close at 9). It's probably the best option in Ontanogin. There aren't really any other options for food. read more

Skip the chicken!! On a Sunday evening, Syl's was the only option to eat in Ontonagon; the only thing that tasted good was my hot latte. I ordered the sourdough grilled chicken sandwich and ended up having an expensive grilled cheese as I had to take the chicken breast out - so dry and rough - probably one of the nastiest pieces of chicken I tried to eat. My boyfriend ordered the Frisco burger and curly fries. He said his fries tasted like my beer batter fries which tasted like the bacon on his burger. It was so GREAT to have such good food after a long hard day of driving up from Madison WI and moving my belongings to storage in Atlantic Mine. My daughter in law was looking forward to trying the cranberry turkey wrap but they had run out of turkey(keep in mind we called late evening) she ordered the Pecan Chicken turkey wrap and said it was delicious! I told her next time she could try the Turkey wrap. My son and I both ordered Pasty's with coleslaw next time I think I need to try it with gravy! We also ordered a salad which we shared also delicious! I am moving to the area and have bookmarked this place for future visits with friends and family!
