We have eaten here many times and are never disappointed. But tonight........... they had a special - a Rueben sandwich. I know, who would order a Rueben sandwich at a brick oven pizza/Italian restaurant, right? My husband is a lover of Reubens. He makes his own. He makes his own Russian dressing. His are to die for no matter where we have ever had them. Until tonight. Y'all. Hands DOWN maybe the most delicious thing we have ever put in our mouths. The sous chef told us the sourkraut is the chef's grandma's recipe...aged for days (maybe longer, I can't remember!). The most tender EVER corned beef... aged for days (maybe longer??). Then the sous chef's own version of the 'russian dressing'. We were both trying to figure out what in the world it was made of. He came out and told us. We still wouldn't know how to make it but WOW. When food is made with such patience, love, and flavor like this.... you just HAVE to experience it. This blew our minds and tastebuds! Switch is my go-to restaurant for business meals in Palestine. Great wine selection, food is consistently good and service is very friendly and efficient. When I have repeat visitors their comment is usually, "let's go to Switch." I recommend "The Beginning and the End" but I've enjoyed their pasta dishes as well. I tried the Margherita pizza, but it was only mediocre. Parking can be tricky in a big truck. Make your way to the lot up the hill in the back right corner. read more

This was our second time visiting Switch and Palestine, TX. We really enjoyed the pizza and atmosphere during our last visit so we decided to return while in town this weekend. I'll start by saying that our server was absolutely terrific but I am so disappointed about what happened after dinner. The owner was extremely rude to us as we were leaving. When we arrived to the restaurant the parking lot was at capacity and partly under construction so we were forced to park near a dumpster to ensure we made our reservation on time. There were no signs stating no parking and we made sure no one was blocked in. The owner of this restaurant apparently claims a parking spot near the dumpster as his personal parking spot, which after experiencing his personality makes perfect sense. While we were inside supporting his restaurant and spending a lot of money on food and drinks, he decided to block our car in with his car and wait outside to confront us while we were leaving. As we walked toward our car he let us know that this was "his spot" and that "people have only parked in my spot twice in 8 years!". I did feel bad if we took his (unmarked) spot so I said "I'm so sorry". Then he got loud, pretended to be on the phone and said very rudely "yeah! They must be new to Palestine because everyone knows it's my spot!!" How childish. I'm sorry that you have personal problems that make you feel like you should talk down to people. I hope you never treat another customer or person so rudely again. read more

We were visiting Palestine for the weekend. Stumbled upon this place off the main drag and up on the hill that used to be a church. We love to sit at the bar for dinner and Jose took great care if us. I had Pizza and my wife a salad with salmon. Both were quite tasty. That was the first night in town. The second night we wanted to try something different. The place we picked was upscale and while it might have been good, the atmosphere was a bit stuffy. When they said there would be a wait, we both agreed to go back to Switch. This time I had the NY Strip and my wife had the Chicken Chinois. They did not disappoint! The steak was as good or better than what I make at home, and my wife's dish was, in her words, outstanding. All in all we love this place and would probably go back again if we were staying a third night. read more

I went there on a Friday because I was looking for a restaurant that had fish. I looked on the menu and saw that it had salmon but when I got there the waiter said salmon is only in the evening. I got pesto pasta and 3 cheese bread with no protein. The pasta was good but cold and the flat bread was hard as a rock. It still would have been an enjoyable experience except for the egregious lack of accessibility for disabled persons. The parking lot is huge and I had to walk a bit to get to the restaurant and there were no ramps for wheelchairs. Additionally, there were huge craters in the parking lot I'm recovering from a knee injury and I really did not appreciate the lack of accomodations. Honestly I wonder how they even got their license. It surely has to be an ADA violation not to mention city code. I will never go back. read more

Stopped by due to all the local praise. I wasn't let down. The restaurant sits atop a hill a short distance from the highway making it very easy to get to. I literally right across the street from my hotel. I sat at the bar and had a couple short conversations with the bartender and my food was out before I knew it. Alright, this place is a haven, a log-cabin-esque restaurant on a hill down a windy wooded road, hidden away from civilization, lovely setting, lovely view, the inside us lovely, spacious, bright and warm. Parking is ample. We were greeted, sat and drinks delivered in haste. Mozzarella flatbread was a decent size to share, and it was tasty, the marinara sauce was tasty and plentiful. Hubby ordered "The Oink" and I got "The Capra" and added chicken. Both pizzas were delicious, my Capra had WAY too much goats cheese on it, huge wads, which, for mozzarella would be fine but goats cheese is quite strong, you wouldn't put that much blue cheese on a pizza, this was overpowering. Crust was delicious and the Oink was delicious, the meats were high quality and it was everything I had read it would be, on Yelp. I'd have totally given Switch 5 stars, but I have an issue. My issue with this place is that when we asked for a kids menu, or if there was anything our son could eat, like Mac and cheese (it IS an Italian restaurant after all, there is PLENTY of pasta on the menu!) and the server said "there's mash potatoes, that's about all we could do him". So, we paid $3 for a portion of lumpy mash potato. They did cool it for him so it wasn't too hot, but, still, a third of our family had no menu selection and wasn't satisfied for dinner. Very disappointing for the number 1 restaurant in town, so 3 stars it is! read more

Amazing Real Italian in East Tx!! From the greeting to our exit, one of the best food experiences I've had in years...the food is to die for, Special Crab Ravioli blew my mind as well as the Pasta And meatballs which featured the owners family's sauce that is traced back to the old country!! As other reviews have stated, this is not your typical small-town Texas pizza joint. We only made a quick visit for some pizza, but I suspect their other menu items are equally "big city." We enjoyed a great mushroom pizza and wine out on the patio (which, admittedly, overlooks a lovely...equipment yard). Nevertheless, the outdoor experience was quite nice, despite the summer heat. Situated in an old Jehovah Witness church. You walk in through sliding barn style doors into an airy design. The brick oven pizza was so good. I got the Mediterranean with artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, capers, feta, and kalamata olives. The service was excellent my water and coffee was next empty. read more

We discovered switch while on a road trip and found it through a yelp review. We're glad we knew about it because unless we had we would've missed it on the side road that it's located on. Make sure you don't. The best pizza I've had in possibly ever was the ribeye steak and onions. What a great combination and excellent taste. Our waitstaff could not have been nicer and more efficient. And we enjoyed a really great bottle of wine in a very reasonable price. Go there! read more

Probably one of the best restaurants in East Texas. We drive down from Athens just for the pizza. Great service, on-point pizza. A little pricy on the salads but they are stellar quality. My husband is second-generation pure Italian from New Haven, Connecticut. He was weaned on some of the best pizza in the country. This is the only pizza he will eat from a restaurant. Everything is fresh, beautifully prepared, and served quickly. Incredible wine room, the only problem is the parking lot was built for goats, then someone used it as a missile test site. Im giving 1 star because I had to in order to post my review and because I liked the setting of the restaurant. HOWEVER...Im very disgusted with the service that was provided or lack there of should I say. My group and I had a reservation for dinner as it was my last night in town visiting family. We arrived on time however still had about a 20-30 minute wait. After finally being seated we sat with absolutely no acknowledgement from any staff. Not a "we'll be right with you" or "your waiter will be right over" not anything. After sitting for about 10 minutes or so and not even getting anything as little as a glass of water offered a waiter noticed my face as we made eye contact. He actually even took a second look as though he wanted to ask if we had been helped yet since we were all sitting with menus closed. Rather than a quick check in he proceeded to assist others guest that had literally sat down MAYBE 5 minutes prior. Not sure why such poor service but we most certainly walked out and left (still with no acknowledgment from staff)....ya know like a have nice evening...thanks for coming. I would not suggest this restaurant to anybody with the poor service my group and I received. A waste of 45 minutes! read more

We did pizza so I can't comment on the rest of the menu, but after hearing all the hype we had to try it. I'm originally from NY and I make pizza for a living. And I have to say that I have not been this disappointed in a pizza in many years. The crust was tough and flat, appeared to not have any rise in it. The toppings for the carnivore were almost tasteless and very salty. My wife was equally disappointed in hers. And way over priced for what we got. We have been trying to find decent pizza in this area for over a year now. We have a mobile wood fired pizza oven that out distances anything we have tried so far in deep east Texas. read more
