I am close to 40 years old and I never learned how to swim after a traumatic near-drowning incident I had when I was younger. Krista saved my toddler's life. We were 1 week into swim lessons with Krista when this happened. My 3 kids were in the hot tub together, and my 3 yo was practicing exactly as Krista had shown us at our lesson at the end of the week. I looked down to get my phone to film the kids and answer a question someone had asked me. When I looked up, I saw that my daughter had slipped from the step and was bobbing under water. In the time it took for me to call out to her brothers and stand up, my daughter had managed to grab the ledge of the hot tub. She pulled herself back onto the step and got her head out of the water totally on her own, just as Krista had taught her that week. My husband works in an ER, so he's seen first hand the importance of water safety. He knew how important it was for our toddler to know what to do in the water. But our son was refusing to get his head wet and did not want to have anything to do with learning how to swim. He can be so stubborn. We first tried the standard group lesson at our local rec center and it was a disaster. Our son grew more resistant and continued to refuse to even get his head wet. When I first spoke to Krista at Swim Synergy I was skeptical - there was no way she would be able to get my 2-1/2 yr old twins to swim independently across the pool. One of them is a scaredy-cat and the other runs and jumps in without thinking. My daughter who is (fearless) accelerated very quickly in lessons. She was stubborn at times with floating; however, with encouragement and reassurance from her instructor she willingly worked on skills that she was less excited about . Krista was very knowledgeable, patient and friendly and helped Hanna calm down soon enough. Once Hanna realized that she had skill on top of confidence, she WAS able to swim all the way across the pool. I was astounded!! No floaties, no arm bands! My son who is (very cautious) was hesitant at first and required a little more time to master the skills, but Krista took her time earning his trust and making him feel safe. I was amazed at how he overcame his fear of the water, became a competent swimmer, and now happily swims for hours with his sister in our pool. I have had friends who put their kids in other programs but their kids STILL can't swim! I can't recommend this highly enough! It's not simply a matter of choosing a swim school and picking out the cutest swim suit and taking pictures of your child in his too-big-for-his-face goggles as he smiles his biggest toothy grin. It's an all-out adventure. Unfortunately for many of us, including our family, it has been an adventure full of obstacles. For a child with autism, a swim lesson isn't just an instructional lesson about having fun and being safe in the water: learn a skill with a buddy and earn m&m's. It's typically a bombardment to their senses both physically and emotionally as well as a cognitive challenge; not only are we asking them to allow their skin to be touched and their bodies held, but we are also asking them to be in a pool of moving water, listening attentively, following instructions, coordinating their bodies, and filtering all kinds of physical, visual, and auditory stimulation. Prior to meeting Krista, we had attempted swim lessons in all the wrong ways. Our results were heartbreaking -- tears, hives, welts, panic attacks, hyperventilating, you name it. We started, and quit, two different programs. As a mother, I was fearful and losing hope that my child would ever be able to swim. When I found Swim Synergy, I was drawn to Krista's education and qualifications. I was not aware of her extensive experience with special needs children. When I spoke to her over the phone, I was quite honestly blown away by her knowledge of my sons needs without me needing to explain them to her. She also taught me so much about what she felt had gone wrong with the other programs we had tried. We began lessons on July 29th, 2013, and my son did not even want to step into the water that day. Within the first week, even though he was afraid, he was putting his eyes in the water. By the 2nd week, he was eagerly (and happily!) submerging his face on his own. Now, after only 6 weeks of lessons, he is already doing floats and swims. It is amazing to see! He has NEVER once said he doesn't want to go to swim lessons since starting with Krista. She is an exceptional instructor - so calm and loving yet firm when necessary.
