I am writing this review on behalf of the staff at this location. The teachers are so wonderful and caring. The office staff is always accommodating and friendly. Unfortunately, we have noticed that staff members, including one of our favorite instructors have left and are planning on leaving their employment at this location. I have learned that this is not because of the job itself, but because of the conduct and behavior of the owner whom I shall refer to as "B" "B" does not seem to value his staff in the way we, the customers, do. It is my understanding that he is often rude, dismissive, abrupt, and insensitive to staff. I have also learned that there is hardly a staff member at the school that has not been brought to tears by the words of 'B" I have personally observed some of his interactions with staff, and was horrified that they would be spoken to in the manner that he did. This type of business relies on their staff, specifically their teachers. Without them, there is no business. I am quite concerned that there will be a continued turnover, which will have a direct negative impact on the students at the school, including my son. I know that this is a family owned and operated business. I have great respect for the Callan family. Unfortunately "B" is risking their good reputation, and I truly hope someone in the family business can step in and change the course such that the staff be treated as they deserve. I know that many families, mine included, will follow our child's instructor if they should leave this location. This 5 star rating is only because of the employees. read more

I do not recommend using Callan for kids under 3. We brought our almost 2 year old and it wasn't the best experience. First, they might pair your kid with another older kid (that already knows how to swim but spends more time with them) or extremely younger like a 1 year or younger (which requires more time and attention) and you split your 20 minutes, so you really get 10 minutes but they always end about 2-3 minutes early. You are responsible for your toddler when the teacher is teaching the other kid. They just leave the toddler on the steps and say it's your responsibility to watch them. My son almost fell off the steps, would have drowned. So be prepare to get into the water. They include in their contract that it's your responsibility even though you pay for them to teach. Or wait awhile for them to be done with the other kid. Second, they start on time and end it 2-3 minutes early, with a break after each go. So swim time is like 7-8 minutes. Older kids get more water time if paired up with them. They get to swim the whole pool while toddlers get like less than 1 minute. Third, they are extremely inflexible if you have to miss one class. You can't just reschedule with a set date, they make you call the day before to find any time available the next day only and it could be 10am or 5 pm, but who knows. I would imagine they have their schedules out already a week in advance! But no. The front lady is extremely difficult and hard headed regarding rescheduling. Also, I don't know if they have certain milestones for toddlers, but just teaching them to be comfortable in water. No like learning to hold your breath under water or floating or swimming to safety. Some teachers are better and spend more time with your kid, no consistency. What a waste of money and time for toddlers. Never coming back. read more

Callan Swim School - Covered pool - Swimming Lessons/Schools Near Me - San Marcos, California

We love Callan Swim School! My daughter started lessons right when she turned three and didn't even like getting her face wet. Just six months later, she's swimming unassisted across the pool. It's been truly remarkable to watch her progress, and her instructor, Miss Isabella, has made every lesson fun, encouraging, and safe from day one. The lessons are short, which seems typical for this age group, but if you stay consistent, the progress happens quickly. The staff is also very open to feedback and always responsive whenever we've had questions or concerns about a lesson. Going into this summer, I feel confident she'll be able to swim independently, and I'm so grateful she's developed a genuine love for the water. read more

Went to see about swim classes and Jess (kind young lady with light blonde hair) was above and beyond. She was so friendly and patient with my kids. She is very knowledgeable about the school and I had several questions, all were answered well. No tour so to speak but we were allowed to go to the restroom and I think there's two stalls and another area is for lockers but we didn't go in that area, son just needed to use the restroom. Its a covered building, not sure by what but it's not a typical building. I think it was for ventilation, wasn't too cold or too warm. The place has one large pool, seemed super crowded but each instructor had two kids and I was told they switch teaching each minute the whole 20 mins. That's for semi private. They also offer private. You can't get in but you can view from the side. Plenty of seating room. Lots of walking space outside the pool. Lots of Disney decor which I realize kids enjoy but we don't enjoy Disney. Personal preference. I didn't count off for that, just stating it as a heads up. Parking was full but by the road there were two spots and it wasn't that far a walk at all. The missing star is because there's not a lot of flexibility on classes in that it's two a week for a month. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning OR same time each Monday Wednesday OR same time each Tuesday Thursdays. That was the why we chose a different school, because we have a very full schedule working in ministry and community outreach, so what we need during this season is more flexibility. This school is $2 less expensive a class and that adds up over time, but for us during this time, it was worth the $2 more. Again Jess was beyond patient and kind and if their schedule works for you, you'll receive great customer care. Oh and they give 15 mins of free swim after class. Other places only give 10 mins. And they have free wifi! read more

Callan swim school is amazing. The staff are all trained and are great with my kid. Miss Stephanie is amazing and the most welcoming person ever. She genuinely cares about the students of the school. They have a great learning level system, and when you promote to the next level, there is a blue bell you can ring. It promotes rewarding achievements! I love this school! read more

My child has been going since 3 years old to callan swim school. Now that he is 7 years old we go on and off due to school. He knows freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. They have good instructors but we really like his instructor and we always want him because my child's personality matches well with the instructor's personality and teaching style. Finding the right instructor for your child is key! So try another one if the first one doesn't fit after a few lessons. They also have a great facility for learning. - The pool temperature is comfortable and warm for the kids. - The pool is indoors so on a sunny day it's not too bright and the rain doesn't cancel classes. Plus my child has really bad seasonal allergies to pollen/ragweed and with indoor pool I don't have to worry about leaves/pollen getting into the pool water and him getting sensitive. The price is reasonable in the area for indoor pools and semi private lessons. There is only max of 2 kids at a time with an instructor with semiprivate lessons and it has 20 min instruction swim time. Kids can play for 15 minutes after their swim time on the pool play steps area which is nice. read more

When we started, I had no idea how much my son would love this place. I chose Callan because, at 7 years old, my son hated getting water in his face, didn't want to play in the water and still couldn't swim. I was worried about his safety and was sad that he was missing out on the fun other kids were having. Today, my kid swims to the bottom of the pool and doesn't want to get out of the water! He's passed all of the 8 levels and knows all 4 swim strokes! He has developed a love for swimming and I couldn't be happier! He has done so well, we are moving on to a swim team! We will definitely miss coming here and will miss the staff here too! Shout out to Silvia and Larissa for all their help! read more

I have had nothing but positive experiences with Callan Swim School! A skill like learning to swim is such an important decision, especially living in San Diego! After looking at all the local options, Callan was the easy choice. They have a no fear based approach that allows kids to be completely comfortable in the water, and learn to swim. While not an overnight process, it has made our 3.5 year old the smoothest swimmer with no fear or tension. I won't be surprised if our daughter is swimming across the pool at 2. Like every other activity for kids, Callan has their own set policies. They are very upfront with them, and give you a copy as well as have you sign (acknowledgment that you have read and understand them). I don't think any of their policies are unfair. One makeup is great, and you are able to use it at any point, as long as there is a time spot available. After you've used your makeup, you can pull your child off the schedule if you don't want to lose a lesson with no penalty. The facility is always spotless, and is completely sanitized during the lunch break (we've had the first class in the afternoon, so see it being cleaned when early). The pool is always clear (which can't be said for some other local pools, yuck). Both my kids are obsessed with the mural on the floor. And finally, parking is super convenient Okay, now to the actual lessons! We started our son in lessons with Brett, who is a fantastic instructor and has such a great way with kids who are hesitant with the water. Due to a scheduling issue on our end, we had to switch to Larissa's schedule, who was/is just as great. She makes lessons fun, but doesn't make the lesson just 'play time'. She will have our daughter swimming on her own in no time. We were able to get a coordinating time to start our daughter with lessons right after her first birthday. Our son switched instructors (to Jeff) so our daughter could be with Larissa. Jeff is awesome and our son loves him. He's firm, while still being fun and playful. Both kids LOVE swim days, and have excelled. We've had a handful of other instructors due to coming in at different times for either makeups or lesson time changes, and have not had a single negative experience. I think it's so important for kids to be able to handle a bit of change, and different instructors have different personalities and offer different perspectives. read more

We enrolled our son at Callan with Ms Larissa @6 months old. She is very personable, attentive to our sons needs and makes us feel safe as parents. She knows her stuff to get your kid swimming + comfortable in the water! She has trained other swim coach's with our son, and we feel 100% confident in her ability to both teach our son and her staff. The other swim instructors are very friendly and always say hi to our son too. Our little guy is able to sit on the side of the pool and "jump" in, goes underwater and loves going to swim 2x/week. Because of covid, lessons are 1:1 with 15 minutes packed with nonstop swim time. Coaches wear masks, kids do not while swimming (obviously). It feels safe, and we frequently see staff cleaning. Thanks, Larissa! read more

We are happy members of the Callan Swim School family. We started with a different school which was fine when my daughter was 6 months. I could actually see the improvement in her swimming the minute we joined CSS. The instructors are great. My toddler is 3 and she loves and. Allie. Catherine is trying to climb into the pool the minute we walk through the gate. She is so comfortable in the water and as a parent that's all you really want: the big smile on her face! We have another one on the way and he will also join the family at Callan Swim School. We had some trouble with scheduling and Brett Callan actually reached out to us directly to assist. That personal touch is unusual these days and what makes this SD institution outstanding. As a result of the pandemic, you get 7 lessons for $150 sand lessons are private! 15 minutes long which I think is plenty for most kids. I can't stress enough how great the instructors are. If you're looking for a great pool, look no further. Thank you CSS. read more

Our six and eight year old have been going here for almost a year. Our children's experiences with their instructors have been amazing! They love Ms. Brittany and Mr. Liam. I look around the pool and it seems to be a common theme; kids love coming here. Its clear that the staff is vetted very well and that they love what they do. The instructors have provided top notch instruction all while making it an enjoyable and fun experience. The pool is heated and our kids don't waste a second when it comes time to get in. Our oldest has learned three strokes over the months. Our youngest is on their second stroke. Nothing is sloppy here. Technique is repetitively taught. Their favorite time is the last couple of minutes when they get to pick up a ring on the bottom of the pool and/or race each other. There is so much more to write about the instruction given, the biggest take away for us as parents is how comfortable and sure they are in the water today compared to the day we started. The front office staff has been attentive and accommodating to our family. We have had to reschedule once or twice, they worked with us to meet our schedule. When it comes to instruction, we understand a lot goes into a make up class, and we greatly appreciate the effort made to fit us in. When juggling two kids, we have accidentally left a towel or robe behind. The staff was so helpful in getting the items we left back to us. Payment is a breeze. Card or check. They get to know you and will wave you down to re-up. This is another thing I appreciate. We get lost in our days and weeks, the front desk staff is always so friendly. A little story to drive home the friendliness of the front office: Once, I got my times and days mixed up and approached the desk for a little help...I watched as a solo front desk staff member took a call, attended to my request to write down our times/days and took a random question from another staff member that walked up in the middle of all this... totally kept her cool. I actually felt a little bad for coming to the window at that very moment, since they instantly got busy. Basically, I cannot speak higher of the level of customer service and instruction at this school. 5 Stars all the way! read more

My 26 month old daughter started here when she was 18 months and she is absolutely thriving in the water! We've had an amazing experience with our two coaches, Brett and Jessi, who are both great instructors and great at interacting with my toddler! The place has a very inviting feel and every single one of the staff members are engaged and friendly. We've also met a lot of great families and the toddler socialization has been a bonus! While my daughter has a blast at her lessons, I am most grateful for the confidence and water safety Callan has provided her. I highly recommend them! read more

We started back up again at callan after a long break due to COVID. There were many new faces and teachers. Scheduling was a breeze with Gabby and she was able to accommodate us. We have only worked with Ms. Larissa for a few weeks but she has been so wonderful in understanding my son social ques and really getting to know how my son learns (he's in the spectrum). We usually have a hard time with eye contact, transitions, new people, places .. All of the above, Ms. Larissa jumped in and just got him back into swimming and enjoying it. She trains all the other two teachers. Highly recommend, the new crew is refreshing to come back to. Only cons- sessions are too short. read more

5 stars! Amazing progress that our daughter has made so far. We've worked with a variety of instructors and have been very pleased. Very positive swim instructors, the facility is nice, and the administrative staff have always been helpful. On a random note - our swim instructor was out one day, and we had Brett fill in. He seemed very experienced and had some really great insights. Our daughter was doing amazing work with him right away. I thought later that Brett is probably an experienced instructor or even owns the place... turns out he does! I always appreciate when leaders can walk the walk. He sets the example that all instructors follow and we are grateful for his positivity and style. read more

We are so happy with Callan Swim School! Our 2 year old daughter was at another swim School for a while that stopped working out for us. Switching to Callan was a blessing in disguise. Really great experience with this swim school. Our daughter started at 16 months and her last lesson will Be when she turns two as there are too many scheduling conflicts to continue. We will miss this great experience our daughter has had in a safe, clean environment. She had Brianna as her instructor the entire time and we all loved her. She was so knowledgeable, friendly and a great communicator. Our daughter really took to the lessons and we have seen amazing abilities we wouldn't have expected in a toddler. read more

My son loves taking lessons here. He's had about 7 classes so far and he's already going under the water and learning to hold his breath and coast to the steps. He started a month before his 2nd bday (for reference) and he's doing so good there! He's already leveled up to level 2 where they practice with their hands. They have this cute little bell that the kids get to ring once they level up and everyone claps and cheers for you and my son thought that was the coolest thing. Larissa is so good with the kids and the semi-private class is perfect for the little ones. She allows them to go at their own place and takes turns with the 2 kiddos. Lessons are only 20 minutes but for such little kids, it's the perfect amount of time. There's also a shower so you can rinse the kids off when they're done! We are fans! read more

Let me start first by saying this swim school was recommended to me by a few friends. Never heard any bad reviews, so this is just our personal experience. We attended 14 sessions and recently cancelled. The first 7 sessions were great and my toddler definitely got use to the water, holding his breath and swimming across! Big improvement. However, the last 7 sessions the pool has gotten so crowded. We attended the evening sessions and every time my son would get ready to swim across the pool, he would have to stop for more advanced swimmers, swimming across the full length of the pool (priority was always given to advance swimmers). I'm talking minutes wasted (for a 15 min. lesson to turn in 11-12 min.) to where he'd just be sitting on the step or held by instructor. One day she even cut the lesson a minute short, which at $165 for 7-15 min. sessions, can turn into wasted money. The last few sessions, my son didn't even want to swim for fear of the other kids crossing his path and he having to stop for them. That, and it gets pretty loud with instructors giving commands and kids screaming or crying. Evening classes are not recommended if your kid is easily distracted or a new swimmer; I'd try mornings if possible. I brought up my concern for wasted minutes and I was told a max of 10 instructors are in pool, but many families had two kids taking lessons at same time with same instructor, so many more than 20 bodies swimming at same time. Wanted to like this place more, but way too many different levels of kids in pool which make it hard for some swimmers to really get a good 15 min swim session in, esp. when learning to swim short length of pool. I did notice that the instructors were caring and I could appreciate that (some more advanced than others), but just wish there was different protocol or scheduling when it came to pool times/swimming levels. read more

We had the absolutely worst experience with instructors and staff there. Instructors are not vested in student"s success, staff are careless and say one thing, then change it around. Instructors either have anger issues, finish earlier or don't show up. 15 lessons later they keep teaching the same skill ( useless for professional swimming skill to start with) as if there is nothing else to learn. We just had enough of all that and more.... They are also very inflexible wnem it comes to scheduling. Our child, who is like fish in the water, said he never wants to go there again after being yelled at by an instructor for looking at another child swimming! read more

To start I am really disappointed to have to write this review because I was very much enjoying taking my little one here for swim lessons for the last 5 months and watching the progress he was making. However his original swim instructor quit abruptly and a quick google search can enlighten you as to why she left if you have not seen it in the news already. The school did not inform us to the situation prior to our swim lesson and when she showed up they were scrambling to get someone in the pool for his lessen which ended up being very unproductive. We where willing to let this slide as it is not their fault For losing a long time staff member with out notice. We where paired with Allie (who is a great swim instructor) this review is not a reflection on her abilities or customer service because she is great. My child's time was switched to accommodate her schedule (no problem) except these are 20 minute lessons shared with another child which had not previously been an issue because we had always been paired with another baby. This time we were paired with and much old child and the class time was not split evenly. Allie agreed and suggested that we find a better time slot and she had one available. All I had to do was sort it out with the front office. The customer service at the front office is the problem and why I've decided to take my business elsewhere. I have never been treated so disrespectfully in a customer service setting. When I went to switch class times (Juliana) was extremely rude, rolled her eyes and seemed very short tempered. She told me they didn't have another time, they don't pair kids by age etc etc. However they did have another time available which she gave me after being rude and argumentative for really no reason. I let it go because again I liked Allie and my child was dong so well. Fast forward to today. We go for our lesson and in the middle of it Allie states that we aren't on her schedule for some reason and to check in with the front office because they must have made a mistake. She even stated I do not remember you guys being in your last class last week. The swim instructors usually let you know in class 7 so you pay for the next round, at least that had been my experience for the last 5 months. When I went to the front they said I didn't pay and our spot is no longer available. When I let them know this Juliana and another lady (didn't catch her name) told me they let everyone know when they are in class 7 and it was my responsibility that I needed to pay at the last class. Even though I was not informed. Mistakes happen and I understand that. It was their tone, unwillingness to take any responsibility and the fact that they are so argumentative with customers that I have a problem with. On top of the fact that we had another 6 unproductive classes due to their staffing issues. Long story short avoid this school if you want to be treated respectfully. If you don't make sure you research who is instructing your child.. read more

10/10 recommend Callan Swim School. We started our daughter when she was 6 months old, all during Covid time. They have a lot of safety measures in place and I appreciate the one on one lessons with our instructor. My daughter is now 15 months and very comfortable in the water. Our instructor, Larissa, is very patient and makes sure the children are comfortable with what they are learning. I am very impressed with what Larissa has taught my daughter to do at such a young age! My boys have swam at Callan Swim School for two summers. This summer we wanted to continue swimming private lessons like my boys were used to. It took many phone calls and a almost 2 months to get them on the schedule. During this time I would get phone calls asking if I was interested in starting again, I would explain I already called and was waiting for private lessons to become available. Finally we got on the schedule, we show up and the lessons are not private. The owner eventually was able to get us on the schedule but their procedures they use for scheduling and billing is outdated and inefficient. The staff in the front are unhelpful and some are just plain rude. The information they give is inconsistent. At one point this summer they charged me the wrong amount and then called me like it was my fault. I've learned that the front office is always right, and customer service is nonexistent. The other thing I've noticed now that my children our older is they are put with less experienced swim instructors. Last summer, my children swam with Manny and learned so much. This summer unfortunately the veteran instructors are saved for infants. This summer my children swam with four instructors who were okay, their progress was minimal despite private lessons for 2 1/2 months (1 level each). read more

Terrible place! Where to start...First of all they make you pay in advance with absolutely no room to cancel or get a refund. So if you don't like the service and attention of the teachers to your precious kids you're done. Second the only reason why I chose this place was because they brainwashed me saying that it was all about consistency, that private classes were mandatory twice a week to gain progress, that they would be with the same teacher every time to avoid restarting from scratch with someone new, etc. Well guess what? It's been three classes so far..,my son already was doing strokes and was able to swim halfway the pool on his own...slow but getting there. The purpose of the class was to make sure he improved obviously. The first class he was playing most of the time, in a very small portion of the pool, small is an exaggeration. The pool has only two lanes and it is overcrowded with shared and private lessons so there's no room for the poor kids to really practice. Second class, the titular teacher didn't go, the substitute teacher had to "reassess" my son's level and start from scratch. Third class...no teacher again, not even a sub so just like that the class is gone. They let you make it up but once again talk about lack of consistency! Again I understand that people can call in saying they are sick but obviously this school is not prepared to still provide the service that they had committed to in case of any eventuality. Since it doesn't matter that they are not delivering we as parents are still obligated to keep paying for whatever is available, quality and service wise. So I'm stuck with this school for another 3 weeks of class cancellations, substitute teacher, inconsistency in the teaching, crowdedness, etc To finish as a cherry on the pie their customer service is horrible. Gaby who is one of the people on the phone and front desk is beyond rude. During my conversation I had to ask her three times to let me finish to get my point across, she kept talking over me, interrupted me and the third time I asked her to let me finish she put me on mute. It seems in this place parents are not treated as valuable customers, the front desk personnel have the last word. Truly dissatisfied and disappointed, I would never recommend anyone to register their kids here. read more

We have been at Callan for almost a year now and truly cannot be happier with the customer service and swim lessons that my daughter is receiving. This update is to let folks know that instructors beg parents to give good reviews so they get their annual bonus. So be wary of the 5 stars and consider of having a biased review system is something you're willing to work with when you decide on swim lessons. read more

My girls are currently 4.5 and 2.5 and both started here when they were each 3m old. I was needing an outlet for infant activities, which are few and far between, and really enjoyed it here with my oldest, so-much-so that we started my second one early too. They always make sure to accommodate both my kids at the same time and with the same instructor. Each started swimming independently at 2.5 and continue to work to refine their strokes and confidence in the pool. Since we have a pool at home, I really appreciated their emphasis on practicing safety, but how to get to the side of the pool, not floating indefinitely until being rescued. I would highly recommend Callan to anyone looking to get their kid pool-safe, or even just wear them out for an extended nap time. As an added bonus, they take amazing underwater photos of your kids and/or family every other month or so! #christmascards for $50 read more

Stroke. Stroke. Breathe. Stroke. Stroke. Breathe. As I sit and watch my son, now age 9, swimming across the pool, I am struck by the reminder of where he came from. Having been diagnosed at a young age with low muscle tone, and more recently with ADHD, he has found unique challenges when facing every day tasks, but most certainly also in anything to do with sport. From walking and hiking to playing with friends, his endurance has suffered, and his ability to keep up lagged behind. A couple of years ago my wife and I really began to look at swimming lessons for both of our children, and tried a couple of avenues that never quite worked for our youngest... that is, until we found Callan Swim School. Jump. Splash. Race. Laugh. Smile. Swim! We've watched as our son has grown from a child who avoided the water at all costs, running terrified from the sea shore to one who now welcomes any opportunity to swim. Mr. Dre, his swim instructor, has proven to be essential in not only teaching our son how to swim, but also in how to believe in himself. He has picture-perfect technique in both the freestyle and the backstroke, and is now starting to learn the breaststroke and butterfly! From barely being able to keep his head above water to taking to the water like a fish, his confidence, strength, and endurance have all been climbing in equal measure. We cannot thank Mr. Dre and the entire staff at Callan Swim School enough for all that you have done for our son so far, and we cannot wait to see what the future brings! Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. And to all of you who are considering where to send their children to learn to swim, you will not find a more caring or knowledgable staff than you will right here. read more

Holding his breath, using his arms, swimming across the width of the pool, and is now working on coming up for a breath, and he's not even two! She's been so good with him and patient, specially through the crying stages. We have recommended her to many, and two of our friends have already joined with her and love her as well! If you want a dedicated and effective swim teacher, request Miss Brianna! read more

We can't thank Callan staff enough for the progress we've seen in our daughter. Not only did she go from not wanting to stick her toes in the water to gliding across the pool with ease- but she no longer DREADS the water and smiles confidently when she finishes her lesson. Coach Larissa was patient with her and knew just how to push her to take it to the next level while keeping her comfortable. Now with Coach Manny she is continuing to excel and is proud of herself. We will be here for quite some time until our lil fish can swim on her own! I would recommend Callan to anyone with kids of any age. We started her at 3 and it was the best decision we've made. read more

I have 3 daughters that Brett personally taught to swim. My oldest was terrified of the water until I took her there. His skills, patience and knowledge of children made her comfortable and she was able to thrive. I cannot express my gratitude enough!!!! I highly recommend this school. read more

After a negative experience at another swim school, we waited awhile to try again. It was such a huge relief to find Callan, and it shows that all swim schools are not alike. Our kiddos love coming to their swim lessons and are making such great progress. They look forward to it every week. I credit this to our instructor Cooper, who is amazing. From the first lesson, he earned their trust. He used play and fun to get them comfortable getting in the water. He took kids who had no experience and some fear about getting into the water with a new person and made them love learning to swim. Such a weight off my shoulders as a mom, since swimming is such an important skill. Thank you Callan and Cooper! read more
