He also does everything from wedding cakes to treats for special events, like the Huckelberry Festival. His experience shines through in his flakey strudel with Bavarian cream filling (a personal favorite). He also uses seasonal fruit fillings so look for raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, or the illusive huckleberry to make appearances in the sumptuous muffins and scones. Speaking of scones, you must try them, and at $1 they are half price and on par with what you'd find at a Starbucks or more upscale bake shop. All the quality and half the price, my kind of place! To some locals that are comparing the prices to the local supermarkets, ok it's a little more expensive, but you cannot compare these fresh baked, quality treats with a Rosauer's donut or packaged cookies. Plus, if you buy your pastries for your Sunday church socials from Angel, you are supporting and keeping your money in the local community. For example, the maple scones have figs incorporated giving them both texture and contrast. The doughnuts are sometimes flavored with lavender, sometimes hibiscus, sometimes both, giving them a scent and flavor that elevates the ordinary doughnut to something truly special. Even though I am not gluten free, I often buy the GF shortbread cookies beautify decorated with an edible pansy flower. Trust me, you need to buy this for your next brunch or gathering. There are various types of stuffed croissants, brownies, artisan chocolate bon bins and caramels, cookies, focaccia, hand pies, cinnamon rolls, lavender tea cookies and more! Really hard to make decisions. Luckily I'm there weekly so I get to try most everything. The lavender shortbread squares with half dipped in dark chocolate, sprinkled with lavender, are my favorite. Only available in the cooler months as chocolate melts in the heat, I always buy a box of 6 for $10. They also make a great little hostess or just because gift for a friend. You can also find these at the gift store at Hood River Lavender farm for a treat any day of the week. The owner and baker, Beverly, is the best! I am now a subscription customer, and always look forward to the Sunday morning delivery. The only drawback is the loaf of bread - it's not sliced, so I get a workout slicing the entire thing. But since I also subscribe to a butcher box, and some meat pieces warrant dividing them into smaller portions, I just had to order another appliance - my very own electric slicer! The bakers are very responsive to calls, and if something looks amiss on my order, they'll call to check it out. They even have a flock of ducks, so they can supply you with duck eggs. If only we had a cooler with us... Huckleberry Empanada ($6.50) - Their huckleberry jam is the best of the ones I've tried. Other places in Oregon, on the Fruit Loop and off, have a dried fruit kind of taste or lean musty in flavor. This one has full bodied huckleberry flavor that's quite fresh. It may be due to them using a different variety of huckleberry? Anyways, it's filled inside an expertly baked outer crust that holds the filling in well and adds some buttery crisp, pie crust like texture. I really enjoyed my visit to Packer Orchards & Bakery.
