Dented, falling fondant on bottom of cake.
Monica Q.

So, I recently ordered a cake from Sweet Novelette, she was a very responsive and professional online. And had a really sweet voice in person. However, on the day of, I had the time to come an hour early and I asked if I could come by. First I tried to call, and my call was ignored twice. That made me a bit anxious, then I messaged her on Thumbtack if I could pass by, and Annabel responded merely with a "your cake is not ready yet." which had me really worried. But, I coolly responded with a thanks and I would be by in an hour to pick it up. Finally, the hour came up and I went to her door. She lives in a gated community, so at the gate I had to ring and call her unit in order to have the gate opened. And it took me about ten minutes to reach her. I had to call three times in order for her to answer my call. It was all pretty scary. The ignored calls, the message saying that my cake wasn't done yet. I was expecting so much from this cake, because her portfolio looked AWESOME! I mean those cakes on her website were beautiful! Flawless! I didn't want to say anything to her face to make her upset, but the shells on my Hawaiian cake were NOT up to par. The fondant design was cool, but the hibiscus flowers and the shells... you can tell that they were done last minute. The starfish at the top had already broken by the time it got home, all the storage instructions - temperature, handling - was followed, but it still started to fall apart after about 4 hours after pick up. As for the cake itself, I ordered an Apricot Moscato with vanilla filling. Not many guests liked it, I mean I still have the top tier and half the bottom tier in my fridge. I was really sad because I went all the way out to L.A. to get a really cool cake from my mom, and I got comments along the lines of it being too dense and too sour. I really wanted this experience to be really cool, but judging by the amount of cake I still have in my fridge, it wasn't really worth all that time to drive out and money. I was really optimistic...

Annabel is AWESOME!!! I had a bit of strange request for a birthday celebration cake that was some what of an adult theme. I sent her a picture of what I was thinking about, she had a few questions to get a feel for the person and the occasion and then we were good to go. When I arrived to pick up the cake I was pumped to see it looked exactly how I wanted it to. It was PERFECT!!! Annabel is very professional, and her rates are pretty reasonable. She is a little out my area, but the drive wasn't too bad. Oh and the cake was delicious!!! I went with a chocolate cake with salted caramel butter cream, everyone though it was AMAZING!!! I highly recommend Sweet Novelette!

The packaging alone screams luxury. The potato chips are to die for! The chocolate is not too sweet, the chips have a nice crisp and the right touch of salt. The truffels are some of the best I've ever had. I think the price for these items are quite reasonable for the quality your are given. Each bag of chips are about $18-$20. These chips are perfect for gifts or cheat day. Truly something special! The service is very good. I've had the same ladies help me every time I've visited and they are always very kind. This place is located inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace. It's right at the entrance of the Market. I'm not always in the area but when I get the chance I pick up at least a few boxes. You will not regret this treat! The place is very clean. There is plenty of parking available.

She gave the first customer several discount cards for being Japanese and spoke kindly to her. I don't think the worker realized I understood every word. We arrived as the second customer, but she acted as if a later customer was in line first, shooed us off, then gave the last discount card to that customer. Royce chocolate dedicated stores value their service and make sure their customers are taken care of. Please uphold that standard. I've never had to leave a Royce store feeling upset that I bought chocolate until today.

I would imagine a nice spot to get some work done or have a nice chat. I got their signature latte and it was very good. It was on the sweeter side for me but that was just me that day. Some days I prefer sweeter! I also go a few pastries: Cream Cheese garlic bread, jalapeño spam croissant, and a chestnut mochi. I brought them home and heated them up to share and it was a hit with everyone. I assume they would also heat it up by request if you stay there but not sure. I didn't get their names but the two people that served me that day (11/19/25) were very nice and quick. I didn't feel rushed while I was choosing at all. Definitely a solid option for anyone looking for a sweet treat.

The service wasn't great and only one drink was good or correct. I'm still not 100% sure one of…read morethem was the correct drink. I ordered 2 drinks through the app yesterday, the Honey Bori Latte (seasonal) and the Banana Milk Latte. The Banana Milk Latte was delicious once everything was mixed well, but the Honey Bori Latte was just bitter and then less bitter when mixed. It was already half melted, there was no salted honey cold foam or Jolly Pong which is supposed to be part of the drink. I got the order to go, so I didn't notice that my drink was wrong until I got home, so I couldn't even get it corrected. I didn't realize the drink was wrong at first. I thought it was just a flavor I didn't like even though I noted that I couldn't taste Barley at all. Then half way throught it, I decided to look at the description on the app to remember what it was supposed to taste like because it tasted like an ordinary flavorless latte. The description said there's barley milk, salted honey cold foam and Jolly Pong. That's when it hit me that I either got the wrong drink or someone didn't make it right because there was no flavor of salted honey and definitely no Jolly Pong in my drink. It didn't even look like I had cold foam topping my drink, but maybe that's because it was melting already. Overall, I was very upset and disappointed with my drink, but was happy my mom's drink was fine. Now this is only a part of why I was dissapointed with yesterday's experience. The other reason was the app and workers. Maybe the workers aren't used to working with the Smoking Tiger app yet? Or maybe the app still needs work, but the drinks I ordered through the app took forever to be marked ready even though my drinks had been ready for some time which was obvious because my Honey Bori Latte was already half mixed because the layers of ingredients were melting into each other. I arrived at the cafe about 5 minutes after ordering, but the app's estimated wait time was another 10 minutes which wasn't a problem for me, especially since I saw a person waiting for his order and some people inside the cafe, although it wasn't full like usual. I just assumed some people ordered before me, so I just have to wait a bit, which again was fine with me especially since I was waiting for my mom to arrive. At some point after the one person waiting for their drink left, I realized the 2 girls at the counter were just talking and not making any drinks. I checked the app and it still said my order was being prepared. After 2 more people ordered their drinks and received them immediately, I went up to the counter, by this point it had been the app's estimated 10 minute wait. I told the girl with glasses my name and showed her the order on my phone. Then she walked toward the fridge and got my drinks, put them in a drink carrier, passed them to me and then turned around while looking at the receipt paper that was with the drinks. That was it. She didn't tell me which drink was which and they were not labeled, so my mom and I just had taste them to figure out which was which. At most places, they let you know which drink is which, so I was just confused with the service I received, especially when the place wasn't busy. And to top it all off, my order was marked completed 10 minutes after I received my order which again just left me in confusion. I usually love this place and was saddened when they got rid of their Choco Mugwort drink, but I'm always looking forward to their seasonal drinks and baked goods. This time though, I don't think I was even able to taste one of their new seasonal drinks because it tasted like a regular latte with milk. I want to try their other current seasonal drinks, but I'm also worried about what I will receive in the future and I'm not ready for another disappointing coffee any time soon.

One of my favorite recent discoveries. Definitely worth adding to your list…read more I wasn't sure what to expect at first. The front space looks more like an arts and crafts setup than a typical chocolate spot (sorry Naomi if you're reading this), but the tasting experience completely changed my impression. Naomi, who led the tasting, is also involved in making the chocolate, which made a big difference. She walked us through their collaborations over the years and the inspiration behind different flavors. It's not a set tasting menu. It's more go with the flow, which made it feel personal and relaxed. She's clearly passionate about what she does and very open to ideas. You can even reach out ahead of time to design your own experience. We ended up tasting over ten flavors that day because she was generous with samples. I left feeling like I probably don't need chocolate again for a while, but still walked out with a stack of bars to share with friends and family. There's something really special about how they connect you to the process. Seeing raw cocoa beans and learning more about how everything is made gave me a bit more appreciative. I also tried cacao nibs, which are gaining popularity, but I'll admit I still prefer chocolate with some sweetness. One standout was a bar sweetened with maple sugar. If had similar but it's also completely different. So many interesting flavors and ideas here. Definitely a unique and memorable experience. More reason for you to check it out.

I did quite a bit of research before I purchased a Groupon for a Bean to Bar tasting for my chocolate loving husband. We were scheduled for a tasting on a Saturday. About 10-15 minutes before our scheduled time, Naomi called us to tell us that the experience would be delayed for 15 minutes. We were in the Old Torrance parking lot, and this was fine with us since our lunch plans were over an hour later. However Sean called us minutes later to let us know there would be a more significant delay, so we decided to head home. The new proposed time conflicted with our lunch plans so we asked to reschedule to the next day. Then, to our surprise Naomi called again to say she was nearby. We were so confused and almost home, so we let Naomi know that we arranged to come the next day with Sean. There seemed to be a miscommunication between them. Fortunately we live semi close to Old Torrance, otherwise it would have been very inconvenient to drive back and forth. The next day, our tasting ended up having 9 people in a cramped space and was over an hour (rather than the advertised 30 minutes). It was interesting to learn about the process but we were interrupted a few times by a couple customers. We got pieces of chocolate at differing % levels and bon bons at the end. Because the experience lasted much longer than we anticipated, we had to leave more abruptly for a scheduled order pick up. I saw that in people were offered 1-2 full bars in previous years. I don't believe the more recent tastings offered any full bars. Needless to say, the chocolate is quite delicious and could be worth purchasing if you want to support a small business. I don't think the experience is necessarily worth it unless there are some changes in the organization of the business.
