The employee was very friendly and answered questions we had and gave some recommendations. Prices were reasonable for quality chocolate. The caramel turtles looked really good as well. I am a candy store lover ... anytime I travel, which is a lot, I stop in at a little candy shop…read morewhen I see them. Sure, these places aren't cheap but homemade chocolates are worth the $20-$40/lb. because this is a lost art which has been around for centuries. I've been to Eidelweiss in Beverly Hills, Sees in L.A., Candy Man in Orient Point, etc. and Massachusetts has a few decent spots in areas like Gloucester and Concord. Priscillas was started in Gardner, MA of all places. Gardner used to be the furniture making capital of New England until Ikea, Walmart, Target, Homegoods, etc. flooded the market with inexpensive Chinese and Indian furniture. Garner since has lost much of its luster, which is surprising that it can sustain an upscale candy business. While browsing through Concord, I saw the Priscillas offshoot and the location made more sense. The store is small and sparsely decorated but from the minute you walk in, the unmistakable scent of chocolate is there. There is a case with rows of lovely dark and milk chocolate pieces which you can choose from. It costs around $20 per pound but is so worth it. My favorites are the sea salt carmels and the dark chocolate coated orange peels. A close second are the pecan clusters and the marzipan. They are very patient as you fill up the box and help you choose each piece. This is one of the fun parts of the chocolate buying experience ... the countdown to fill the box. (A half pound holds about 11-15 pieces, which is more than it seems.) The candy is unmistakably fresh. It is night and day between the boxed stuff you'd find in even upscale stores like Wholefoods. You really can't replicate the taste of handmade chocolates through mass production. The only one who has even come close is Sees Candy of LA which sells outside of the region during the holidays. (However the counter at its LA factory offers fresh pieces.) I'd stop back at Priscillas or give it out as a present without a doubt. Its so good and fresh, you will be very popular with whomever you choose it for.

That said, I succumbed recently as we were having friends over for dinner and although I made a dessert to serve, I thought it would be nice to have a few chocolates out in a dish as well. I bought a small box of chocolate covered caramel squares made by this local family-run Massachusetts company. Their website says the business started in 1979 and they now have the second generation of family members working there with the third generation (kids now) waiting in the wings. I do love a local family-owned and run business. The particular chocolates I bought were: "Vanilla Caramels" and I would describe what I got as very good quality chocolate covering delicious and creamy soft caramel inside. The shop is in Rowley which is north of Boston...we live south of Boston so getting there would be a haul. Fortunately our in-town local family-run market sells Winfrey's chocolates. I am glad I took a chance on these as we all found them to be fresh and really delicious...in fact, so good they were all eaten that night. I saw in another Yelp review that someone especially loves their chocolate peppermint bark...I saw that option in the store too and while I know a lot of people love the mint-chocolate combo..I am not one of them. But for the holidays, I am guessing this will be a big seller. These chocolates would make for a nice hostess gift or stocking stuffer too and I will keep that in mind going forward this holiday season.
