Not So Enchanting
I…read morehave been in here twice. The first time was a dine in, with the intent to enjoy some treats with my daughter. The second was to inquire about pricing for cakes.
The short version: I don't plan to go back and I would not necessarily recommend them.
The version with more details:
I was so excited on the first visit to try this place, it was so cute and I really enjoy supporting little, local businesses. Even the name was adorable! So I took my young daughter in with me to enjoy some sweet treats.
We ordered a slice of rainbow cake, a specialty cupcake, and a coffee (for me). The gentleman that we ordered from was really very nice and clearly customer service oriented (he may be the saving grace of in-person ordering), but he did seem pretty new and a little uncertain. I believe the business was pretty new at that time, though, so it was sort of to be expected. I appreciated his eagerness and kindness. Unfortunately, the coffee was extremely bitter (hopefully it was just one bad batch?) and I did not enjoy the rainbow cake at all. When they asked me how the cake was, I tried to politely let them know it tasted just a bit off. The owner got a bit defensive and kept telling me it was because it was frozen and it just needed to thaw more. It didn't seem so frozen, but I accepted that as a possible reason, nonetheless. (If it was, indeed, frozen, why didn't they warn us when we ordered it, though? ...and why not, possibly, suggest a different treat for me to sit down at the table and eat, one that was more ready?) I didn't mention the coffee, as I recall. I felt bad, torn between wanting to support this cute business and being disappointed in the coffee and the sweet treats. As I recall, the owner offered us a cookie for free (which was very nice), but unfortunately, I did not enjoy it. My daughter seemed to like the sweet treats well enough, but she isn't very discerning when it comes to sweets; if it has sugar, she likes it.
We drive past this place OFTEN, and my daughter frequently asks to go in, but, with the first experience still in my mind, I usually tell her 'another time, honey.'
Then, I had an idea (this is months later)... I thought maybe I could surprise my daughter and her friend with a rainbow cake from Enchanted Oven by ordering it for an upcoming celebration. The website didn't have the information I was looking for (this was more a problem with my Internet than their website), so I swung into the shop the next time I passed it, to inquire.
The same, very kind, very eager-to-help gentleman was working the front counter and asked what he could get me. I looked in the case to see if they had the rainbow cake again; maybe I could give it a second chance, give it ample time to 'thaw' this time and see how it tasted. When I mentioned rainbow cake, the gentleman said they had it and was quick to point out a different, multi-colored treat--something with chocolate and 3 layers of different colors--and I let him know that wasn't quite the 'rainbow cake' I meant. He turned and asked the (owner?) about the rainbow cake, (he didn't have to, but he was so eager to please, and I appreciate that about him...) and while her response was along the lines of 'that's a special order item', her tone came across with a bit more like there was a 'duh, lady!' undertone to it, but I tried to just shake it off. The lady (owner?) was very busy and didn't have time to talk, which is understandable and would have been absolutely fine, except it wasn't handled well and I got the impression she just didn't want to be bothered. Her demeanor was very off-putting and when I tried to respect her urgency and be brief in my inquiry about the cost of rainbow cakes, the ballpark number range she gave me for the rainbow cakes was *really* high. Maybe if I had some other hook at the time to go on (a wonderful cake taste on my last visit, exceptional customer service, captivating pictures of previous works for something similar...), the price would have seemed more worth it, but nothing in the entire exchange with her made me the least bit compelled to order from her or support her business, unfortunately, as the whole conversation felt like a shove out the door, really.
That, coupled with my first experience....I just can't recommend this place.
Maybe, some day in the future, I will give this place a third chance and change my tune, but a future visit is not on the radar right now.
If I were to talk directly to the owner, my suggestion to avoid this in the future would be: give your front counter employee some information to go on so he can help field some of the questions with future customers. He is very sweet and very eager, but both times I came in, he had that 'I'm still new and don't know how to answer your questions' sort of quality. I think he could really do a lot if he had a book of pictures, some price ranges, etc.. handy to show people.
