The sandwiches were substantial and filling, the scones were large and rustic rather than elegant, and there wasn't a petit four in sight. Everything was served on wood boards (and I loved the old loaf tin which was used to carry out the salt, pepper, napkins, and cutlery). Our server simply couldn't have been nicer. We arrived earlier than our booking but that wasn't a problem at all. The lunch rush had finished, we were told, so we should just make ourselves comfortable - which we did, on the charming little fake grassed patio at the front. He brought us out a bottle of nice cold water and glasses and then explained how the food would be presented. Unlike a traditional high tea, this meal is served in two courses - sandwiches followed by cakes (and we opted to have our drinks with desert). With each course, the server took the time to explain what we had been served (and even recommended that I let my apple tea sit for an extra minute to brew properly). The sandwiches were not dainty wafer-thin cucumber slices on crustless white bread. They were hearty, meaty, wonderful concoctions on moist, dense, crusty home-made rye (studded with caraway seeds). We got corned beef with sauerkraut and hot mustard (Ruben sandwiches), smoked salmon with spinach and salted cheese sauce, chicken and tomato, and (my personal favourite) Cuban slow-cooked pork. There were two halves of each, but we both basically picked two we liked and devoured them. We couldn't manage to eat all of the cakes (brownies, jaffa cheese cake, Persian love cake, chocolate truffles (I'm sure he called them macaroons but I call that sort of sweet a truffle so ...), and those wonderful scones, with a lovely biscuity crust I've never had in a scone before and now believe it's the only way to have them! It's like two treats in one (there was plenty of jam and cream too, which was wonderful), so we ate the scones and truffles and asked for a doggy bag, which he was more than happy to provide. If we were to go again, I think I'd pay for an extra drink. My Turkish apple tea was the perfect accompaniment to the deserts but starting with a coffee would have been great.

Everybody would be happy if you were given Godiva chocolate box for any occasion. So we had better know where we can get them. Unfortunately, very expensive chocolates are not treated as of very special items here. In some other countries like in Japan, France, Belgium and e.t.c., these chocolates are treated extremely special with very cool and lovely decorations and displays.

Although it was crowded and busy, they handled things fairly well. We received our drinks quite quickly, and they were very apologetic that the food was talking longer. We were kept well updated though. They were also kind enough to bring us little chocolates and hand made truffles while we lined up. My mocha was perfect and the ham and cheese croissant was excellent comfort food after a long morning on my feet. It's good to see everything back to normal, with the only reminder of that day being two brass plaques on the inside of the doorway remembering the two poor souls we lost.

The sign outside the door is the clue: it's not closed, it's a chocolate shop and the sunlight that streams through the windows threatens to melt the beautiful glossy orbs arranged in the counter. As soon as you cross the threshold, a glorious chocolaty waft envelops you. A plate with little pieces of chocolate invites you to taste; knowing that as soon as you do you won't be able to resist buying something. The owner and pastry chef of this glorious shop is Carlos Do Carmo. He is incredibly friendly and happy to answer any chocolatey-related questions; having trained at Le Cordon Bleu pastry course, he is an expert chocolatier and pastry chef. His elegant arrangements of domes, swirls and hearts are filled with 26 intriguing flavours such as chai, ginger, chilli, coconut, mint, wine and spice. This is the type of chocolate you eat with eyes closed, savouring the melt and the slow spread of flavour. His Marrakesh dark chocolate truffle was my favourite: fragrant, unique and warm and fantastically chocolaty. But Do Carmo doesn't just make chocolates. His Portugese heritage is evident in his custard tarts, bean tarts and palmiers, made daily. His passion for pastry and his determination to sell only the best, freshest chocolates and pastries is admirable and unusual. If you want to order something in advance, Do Carmo will make it just before you arrange to pick it up, to ensure maximum freshness. I highly recommend the devilishly rich hot chocolates - warm, smooth and guaranteed to satisfy the biggest chocolate craving. Although there isn't much room to sit and enjoy, Do Carmo is incredibly welcoming and there are a few items of elegant cast iron furniture to perch on. This is a wonderfully authentic and fresh chocolate shop, where you can be sure everything is of the highest quality. You'd be mad not to go here.

You won't get all of these chocolates in the shops, as they have lovely varieties & lots of specials. Also you can buy the chocolate flakes in the tins, Milk or Dark & you can make your own at home & if you follow there instructions you will have a beautiful hot Choc.
