Just had lunch here with a friend. I got there a few minutes before opening as I didn't look at their hours before hand. However Clarissa, one of the owners opened the door and let me wait inside. She was also our server and awesome to speak with. It's a nice cozy space right on Main Street Victor. Plenty of parking in front or out back. The food was great. We started with an "off menu" cucumber salad that was reminiscent of kimchi without the fermentation(see pic). My friend is more of a regular and asked for it. It was Delish, crisp, and slightly spicy but not overwhelming. We both had a soup that was a combo of the Somlar Machu and Num Banh Chok with Shrimp. It had a great curry flavor with a bit of the sour hints you would find in a tom yum. It was just spicy enough to make you know it had heat but not too much to blow out your taste buds. I had to run out for a meeting and left behind too much broth. Should have gotten it to go as I would rather drink that than bone broth any day. What a hidden little gem. An unsuspecting looking cafe in a small town putting out the most flavorful dishes. If you don't know what to try, I highly recommend the beef pho(kathiew). I am from Los Angeles born and raised so definitely know my way around pho and Southeast Asian food. What they serve is absolutely a step up. I also tried out one of their house special rice dishes which was phenomenal. The food here is so good I started eating here almost every day while here for work. The wait staff Clarissa is extremely nice and helpful especially if you don't know what you want to order and will explain what flavors and taste you will get from each dish. I'm hoping I come back for work in the area soon so I can eat my way around the entire menu at some point. The only negative thing is that T-mobile service sucks in the area. Did love the basil green color used as accents everywhere. Service was friendly although not fast Not overly impressed with the food - the curry of the day ended up being too spicy to eat and the Korean tofu stew tasted a lot like hot spicy boiled water not much depth of flavor. The kids though too many veggies in the lo mein noodles - Seems like possibly frozen mixed vegetables made for food service not necessarily Asian vegetables and in pieces that were too large to eat in a single bite. read more

Sweet Basil on Main St in Victor - hello! Open for roughly 9 months, we had never heard of this place until cousins suggested it one night when we were looking for a place with a kitchen open past 8 pm in the area. The interior seems small when you peek in the front windows, but there is lots of seating spread across 2 rooms. The menu, described as pan-Asian, highlights dishes from Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. A great variety of styles of dishes, noodles and rice, gluten-free/allergen friendly, interesting street-food appetizers and delicious and different dipping sauces were listed, and since we were hungry we ordered a bunch of dishes to share. We started with the fresh spring rolls, which were smaller and more plain than in other local places, but ingredients were fresh and crisp, and they were served with 4 awesome dipping sauces, including a creamy peanut sauce, a spicy fish sauce, a gingery-curry-ish sauce and sweet/sour sauce. The sauces were outstanding and really show the skill of the chef in creating delicious combos of herbs and spices. We also ordered the okonomiyaki, which is something we have rarely found on Japanese menus in Rochester. It's basically a pancake made with yam flour, usually including some cabbage or veggies and bacon or pork, topped with dried fish flakes and sauces. This was served pre-cut into 8 slices, definitely big enough for sharing, but could also be a main course for one. It was piping hot when it arrived, and the steam made the bonito fish flakes sprinkled on top wiggle, which can seem like the dish is moving, but I've come to appreciate that from eating this in Asia, as a sign of it being fresh out of the pan. The flavor, consistency and combo of bull-dog sauce and kewpie mayo were perfect. We really loved it. We then ordered main dishes. I had a build-a-bowl-style rice dish with stir fried veggies and a fried egg on top, served with a variety of sauces. There was a good portion of rice, good amount and variety of veggies, and the sauces - I asked to try 3 and they complied - all amazing, and in my opinion, necessary in order to jazz up what is generally just an ordinary dish. My one cousin had their Jambong, which is a spicy seafood noodle soup which we have enjoyed in other Korean restaurants. This version had a slightly thinner, less pepper-pasty broth that was still full of flavor. It included mussels, scallops, and shrimp, plus a good volume of udon noodles (but interestingly no fish or squid). It was very spicy but not unbearable. My cousin ate every last drop. My other cousin had the pad thai, a comfort dish that she orders everywhere and wanted to compare to her faves. This one used different noodles than usual, but was piled high with fresh bean sprouts and crushed peanuts, and was very flavorful. She ate the whole thing too! My hubby had ramen with their miso broth and pork. It came served with a good amount of pork, a whole soft boiled egg cut in half (no up charge!), and bok choy. The broth was really good as were the noodles, though we couldn't tell if they were fresh made noodles or not. The only 'complaint' was that my hubby would have liked a little more veg in the soup. On top of all of the awesome food, our server was fantastic - enthusiastic about the menu, able to describe dishes and make recommendations, attentive (though the restaurant was not that busy at that hour), and very friendly. I'm so glad Sweet Basil Cafe opened up. I desperately needed a pho spot closer to our new home in Bushnell's Basin. While Victor is still 10 minutes away, it's still the closest option and beats driving out to Lyell avenue to satisfy my pho craving. Their beef pho is solid. Very meaty and somewhat fatty if you get the brisket that accompanies it. It's quite good. I think the broth might be missing some of the subtlety of the Lyell Ave pho restaurants, but it's also more robust and meaty. I'd rank their pho above SEA. My wife wasn't super impressed with her soontofu soup, but it still looked better than anything available in the East Rochester area. I've also tried their Pork Bahn Mi which had good flavors and was huge portion-wise. However the bread was bit too hard and it was also a bit too buttery. All-in-all I'm a tough critic of their non-pho dishes thus far, but their pho is excellent. The portions are huge and pricing is fair. I've found the service to be friendly. Take-out has been a bit on the slow side, but they are a newer restaurant so I'm sure they'll work out the kinks. Overall Sweet Basil Cafe is a wonderful addition to the Rochester (and especially Victor) food scene. read more

I have been there 3 times and have tried a few different dishes: beef pho, chicken porridge, red curry, ginger stir fry with pork, spring rolls (both with vegetables and with shrimp), basil fried rice ... no, I didn't eat all that myself, we shared! Every dish was delicious and extraordinary. Even their tea is enjoyable. Beyond just jasmine tea, every night, they make a different tea. It's a family run restaurant. The food is authentic. I decide to modify my review for clarity based on owner feedback and I was hangry when I wrote the review ----- Did not stick around to eat but wanted to provide some info. First, when you Google or Yelp for sushi - this place comes up. THERE IS NO SUSHI! That was the main reason for us stopping in - when you crave sushi, you want sushi. Second, the menus are grossly dirty - they are manually typed and have seen better days years ago. I am germaphobe and that was one more reason we walked out. Glad to hear that you will be getting more professional menus soon. Finally, we arrived at about 5:30pm and somebody was unloading food out of the trunk into restaurant. When seated, we saw five different parties of folks all without food. No idea If this was the chef that went shopping or nothing could be made until the food got there. The owner mentioned their "break" in the feedback to my review - I did not see anything about staff break nor were we informed of this. This should be communicated so folks have an idea of a long wait time - we had an appointment so we were not able to wait for five other tables to get food before ours would be ready. read more

Amazing Asian food on the way to Connecticut from Niagara Falls. I was a bit weary as i've had lots of good Asian food in my lifetime and it had so many different types of Asian cuisines on the menu. I questioned if the chef could really master so many different types of Asian dishes, but boy was I wrong. wow the pho tasted absolutely perfect and it was exactly what I wanted. It definitely hit the spot. My fiancé got the Cambodian curry noodles which were also delicious! So glad we made a detour to grab dinner in Rochester. Homemade noodles, savory sauce with bits of mushroom and veggies and lots of pork. Wonderful dish to begin 2025 and great leftovers for tomorrow. It's such a bright, friendly spot with great food.. I headed for Sweet Basil when I saw they had okonomiyaki! The restaurant is on the main strip of Victor. The inside is very spacious and clean. It is also cutely decorated and I felt comfortable with the distance between all the tables. Looks like they do a lot of takeout business though. Service was a bit slow despite us being the only people in the restaurant for awhile. Our water was not refilled at all during the dinner and it look us a long time to get our food (somewhere around 40 minutes). We got the okonomiyaki, the bun thit nuong (vermicelli rice noodle with pork), and the pad thai. The okonomiyaki was a great start to our meal! It was thick but still crunchy! The flavors melded together very well and I loved the savory-ness of the whole dish. The onions especially were so full of flavor and the fatty mayo on top really complimented everything else. The portion was great too! The pad thai is not what we expected but maybe we got the wrong sauce...? I was confused when we were asked to pick a sauce in the first place. My boyfriend picked the soy sauce but maybe we should have gotten the fish? At any rate it was definitely different but still very flavorful and delicious. I'm not Thai and I've never been to Thailand so I can't say it's authentic or not. I had the vermicelli rice noodle with pork. If you expect an authentic vietnamese bun thit nuong then you will be disappointed. The sauce was fine, a little on the sweeter side. The pork had nice char but it was very very dry. And it was given to me as a whole slice...I had to ask for a knife and fork to cut it up. It was ok to eat, I just wouldn't say it's authentic. Everything from this restaurant is made from scratch, I was so excited for the food I didn't remember to take pictures until the last dish, which was their pad thai (secret menu). This Pad Thai was made with love. There's two different styles you can choose from (soy sauce or fish sauce based), I got the fish sauce. It hit every flavor that your palate begs for in Pad Thai. I've ate and worked at places that used a pre-made Pad Thai sauce, you can tell because the rice noodles comes out orangey red and a little pasty, that was not the case here which impressed me so much. Missed the standard "kimchi" flavor with the Korean pancake. Perhaps just sautéed cabbage. Found hair in my meal that was not my color. :(. Was not a fan of herbal tea with pieces floating in it. Was only provided a fork. A knife/spoon would've helped with consumption. After a sleety day spent fighting with Christmas lights, I just wanted some comfort food, and man did Sweet Basil Cafe deliver!! I was hungry enough that I wanted something for the drive home, so I took a chance on the pork spring rolls with peanut sauce. The crispy pork piece added a flavorful crunch to the roll, and the sauce was delicious! For my main I had beef pho. The serving size was very generous, with all the fixings perfectly proportioned. The broth on its own was hugely flavorful, but when I added the extra sauces and peppers, it became a spicy masterpiece. If you really want to have the full meal experience, pair it with a peanut butter stout from Stumbling Monkey around the corner. Man that was good eats. The only thing that I observed was that they may still have a touch of work to do working out some kinks on the order taking side, but that's to be expected of a young restaurant in this crazy time. Still a 5 star experience!! Takeout tonight of scallion pancake, cucumber salad and Pho ! I can't say enough about it. First , friendly service! Served a delicious tea while I was waiting: rosella - if I heard it correctly. They brew a different tea every day. This one was rose hip, lavender and lemon I think. Tasty and a nice touch. Everything was fresh and crisp where it was supposed to be, and the veggies and tofu in the pho were perfectly tender without being mushy or overcooked. I appreciate the broth for the pho as it was not overly salty, but a delicate broth that allowed the veggies to shine. The sauces and accompanying condiments were perfect and freshly made.. it's great to see this business flourish as it has as I believe it just opened right before Covid hit. Finally got some food here. Came again, this time there were humans present who work here. Got spring rolls and pad thai. Spring rolls were pretty bland but not bad, but the peanut sauce was too thick to dip. I think it might have just been plain peanut butter. Pad thai, which I ordered *extra spicy* was not spicy at all. Not even a little. Plus, the pork pad thai came with a porkchop on top. Just a big, uncut, bone-in porkchop on top, overcooked so it's chewy. Try eating that with chopsticks. The flavor was mostly sweet, maybe a little salty. There are so many places in ROC to get this dish made so much better, it was beyond disappointing. I must've ordered the wrong thing, seems like most people love this place. If you do go though, please, don't order the pad thai. Especially the pork pad thai. I'm out here in the sticks every now and then, maybe I'll try one more time and get the bahn mi (which they only serve thurs, not the day of the week I came) read more

Went her during lunch for Pho. Service seemed to be slow for the lunch hour rush, typical restaurants that serve pho usually have it out right away this one seemed to take awhile to get my food. The pho was ok, one issue is that they didn't have bean sprouts and gave me a plate of shredded cabbage. The other issue is like other places is they don't use real sriracha sauce just a knock off brand. Didn't try anything on their Thai menu. But for Pho I'll head into the city next time. read more

Dropped by since i was down in the area. Great location right at the corner in Victor. Server was great. She was very nice, attentive even though she had to go in the back a fair amount. It was at lunch so I can see why they only had 1 server. Hope there are 2 during dinner hours. So... Victor itself is kind of an Asian food desert - have to go to Fairport. At this restaurant, there are dishes from many food cultures - I saw Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Laotian. Interestingly, no Chinese..... The beauty of having all those different cultures is that there is a good choice. The problem... I'd summarize it as jack of all trades phenomena... I had the pho. The broth was very good, but not quite up to par to some of the pho restaurants in Rochester. I like the mix of meat (I got the beef) but it was a touch on the fatty side. They could have added a few more noodles, and I did have to break them apart in the dish - they were kind of clumped. The add on items were pretty standard and all included. I had the okonimoyaki - a Japanese pancake that is fried. Good texturally but I couldn't really appreciate the pork (that's the kind I got) because the Bonita flakes overpowered the pork taste. I will be back to try the ramen. I think they are doing things right, and I am probably too discerning. read more
