For a community-owned place, the Swarthmore Co-Op is definitely NOT community-friendly. While, initially, stepping in, this place seemed like a cute neighborhood food market that offered produce, ready-to-eat items, bottled and packaged items, and even a sandwich/sushi section, the staff here are just extremely rude and discriminatory. It is blatantly clear that they serve a specific group of individuals, especially at the check-out line, regardless if you were there first. The tone used by the staff is also pretty disgusting. As other reviewers mention, the prices here are high, but I think it's a wonderful place nonetheless. They have things I can't get anyplace else, like delicious sushi takeout and fresh-made deli sandwiches. They also have Metropolitan Bakery bread, and Philly muffins on Fridays. The veggies are fresh and varied, and the meats and fish are trustworthy. The deli section is awesome, with a wide range of cheeses. And they have Vesper Brothers pasta sauce, the only kind worth having if you're not making your own. The staff is helpful and friendly. There is always great seasonal stuff, like candy for the holidays and fresh cut flowers in the warm months. Where else can you get a beautiful bunch of zinnias? read more

Cute market in the heart of Swarthmore. Lots of food/drink options, including ready-made-food. We stopped in for lunch, grabbed some ribs, soup, and a poke bowl. They have a microwave where you can warm up food/stuff behind the deli counter. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Clean, well organized, and staff are friendly and helpful. Is it inexpensive? No. Do I ever manage to leave without adding at least several extra delicious treats? Also no. The staff is delightful and really does foster a sense of community. Well, I used to live the coop. It struggles to survive among the big boxes and chain stores but I have to say, they have lost their way and just try to cater to the four year students and the 12-year-plan Swarthmoreans instead of those that stay for thirty years. Now there is wine, no butcher area and lots of stuff for millennials. I went to but some split chicken breasts. Half was past due by two days. The rest was expiring that day. No thanks. The breakfast sausage they made here was worth a detour. No signs of it. Bring your own bag because they will charge you. read more

My only complaint is your deli area. No matter when I come in to order a sandwich, the people behind the counter are not only extremely SLOW, but there is always complete chaos with the customers waiting in line. In fact, there is NEVER ANY LINE, there's just customers all standing together in no proper order of being served. I can't tell you how many times I've come in and had other customers jump in front of me to order their sandwich because the people behind the counter had no idea who was next. Today when I was in your store, that same thing happened to me and I got so frustrated, I walked out of the co-op. You SERIOUSLY need to figure out a way that your customers can be served in the order they came up to the counter. I'm getting tired of the inorganization of how your deli is structured. read more

This is a nice little supermarket in the heart of Swarthmore, PA. As someone mentioned in a review, it is alike a miniature Whole Foods Market. We bought some locally made pasta (Yumm) with their sauce. So delicious. Great place for a quick bite as well. Explore their deli counter - have some nice options. Since in the heart of town, be careful with parking. I could not find any free dedicated spots if shopping here. read more

This is a nice little market. As it's near my work, I'll go here on occasion to have lunch. They have premade sandwiches, salads, soups, as well as a deli counter, to have a sandwich made to order. There's sushi too, but I've never had it. In addition, they have produce, meats, baked goods, a bulk section, and your standard grocery store items. It's a bit pricier and wouldn't do my routine shopping here, but I've gotten speciality items once and awhile. They support and feature local vendors and companies as well as your household names, which adds to the variety. You can be a member which comes with certain benefits, but as I don't shop here that often, I don't see the point. Most recently I had a BLT to order and a chocolate chip cookie sandwich. The BLT was a nice size. The tomatoes were ripe and the lettuce was crisp. The ice cream sandwich was from Zsa's and very good too. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. There's metered parking directly outside and in a lot across the street. The staff has also been friendly and nice. read more

Delightful place to shop, reminiscent of the days before Whole Foods, Fresh Fields and Bread and Circus began the consolidation of the health food market. This quaint and wonderful grocery coop has survived in great part due to its proximity in the shadows of one of the most progressive Colleges in the nation, the uber-liberal Swarthmore College. The scene is genuinely artsy and upscale. And besides natural and organic foods, there is a sprinkling of regular market selections, chips, dips and detergents... Their selections are outstanding, and their prepared food is both multicultural and delicious. We went over there and regretted that we had bought meat at another place previously. Their meat selection is the rage. Fresh, well cut and well presented. Veggies and greens are fresh and well organized. And their prepared selections are extremely good. Employees are ALL friendly and eager to please. And plenty of parking. This place is a pleasure to shop. read more

Been a CO-OP member since they built the new building about 8 years ago. Because I am committed to the area and the mission of them bringing high quality food, be it organic or from Local farmers or fair trade outfits. Besides that they have events for the community and they give the community what it needs and wants. Members get some additional benefits but everyone is welcome to shop here. The prices are higher than a chain but one of the great things about shopping at this gem is running into your neighbors. read more

This place is great especially if you believe in the but local mantra. Great diary, meats, fish, and produce from local PA farmers. Nothing is better. Grass fed beef. A ton of organic products. Organic bulk spices. A butter machine to make your own nut butters. Bulk coffee. Locally roasted coffee selection is terrific. Bulk nuts and grain section is diverse. Gluten free section is getting bigger. One way or the other this place has you covered. Oh did I mention fresh made sushi and their sandwiches and paninis are out of the world. Plus they have an array of precooked food for you to heat up at home. Love the CO-OP - and I'm not even a member. Luckily, you don't need to be one to shop there. I would describe the CO-OP as local supermarket on steroids, or better yet, a mini Whole Foods type market but better and more intimate. Need some reasons to shop there? Try these: Great Selection Need cheese, meats, seafood, frozen food, vegan/vegetarian options, produce? They have it all! The items they carry are higher quality than many you find in the typical market. They also feature local products all over the store. My favorites are the salsa from Delaware and the bag of chocolate chip cookies. Fantastic Employees Take Pete in the butcher shop. Super nice guy, knows his stuff, always has a smile. But the store is full of employees like Pete. Want to see the opposite of this? Stop by the grocery chain named after the products highlighted on the Road Runner cartoons. Pricing is a little higher but good ain't cheap and cheap ain't good as my boss used to always say. read more

I have been coming to the swarthmore coop for awhile and while I think it has always been overpriced the food has been really good and the customer service has been great until today. I went to the pizza bar to order two slices but what I got today instead was mistreatment from the immature people behind the sandwich bar. Especially this guy in a Phillies hat who should be working at McDonald's or a job that that doesnt require talking. I am sure he wont be fired because when I reported him to his boss that guy mocked me too. Then i had the misfortune of talking to a woman who I guess was manager but all she did was talk to the mocking manager. The pizza was lousy I should have went renatos. Anyway if you are interested in paying for overpriced food and getting bullied while you shop. Then make your way to the swarthmore coop. read more

Let's get one thing out of the way: it's a bit pricey. That's really the only negative thing about the Co-Op. For most stores, that would be enough to drop a start, but here there is a deluge of other great things that they more than compensate. Bulk spices, beans, grains, and coffee. Locally made ice cream, roasted coffee, assorted artisan beverages. Fresh-made sushi, salads, soups, bagels, challah, ciabatta, and breakfast pastries and muffins. The location is incredibly convenient for hanging out in ville, passing through to the college or arboretum. We frequent it on the way to the Tot Lot (Thatcher Park) to get snacks for the kids and coffee for the grownups. Service is always friendly, and being a member entitles one to maintain a balance which can streamline checkout or save you if you are out for a run sans wallet and need to pick up some staples on the way back. Also the tables inside and out, plus bar seating, plus free wifi. As a co-op, it's also not just a grocery store, and earns merits through organizing a grocery delivery service geared toward local folks who can't always get out to shop, supports the Farmer's Market, which is a wonderful town event, and has been a sponsor of numerous community events around town. Extra points for citizenry and community-mindedness. The kind of institution you feel good being a part of and supporting. Highly recommended for all locals to join, and for visitors to stop in for a refreshingly local and healthy snack. read more

This is where I shop when the Selene co-op in Media doesn't have what I'm looking for. (So, if you read my review of Selene, then you know I came here to get the basil and parmesan cheese for my pesto sauce.) It is bigger and more "normal" looking, and it has a much wider selection -- but the trade-off is there's not as big of an emphasis on "whole foods," etc. Still, they carry a lot of local stuff, and it's nice to be able to come here for something I need at the last-minute that Selene just doesn't have. I LOVE their selection of cheese, produce, and cut flowers the most. Oh and the baked goods. Chocolate zucchini cupcake! Awesome. FYI, it is much more expensive to become a member here (I think $300) compared to Selene, but I don't think there's an annual fee -- and you don't need to be a member to shop here. read more

I found this place when I needed to pick up some soda to go with the Chinese food I was picking up next door (at the wonderful but now gone Cheng Hing *sniff*). Seemed to me to be a mini Trader Joes/Whole Foods type place. Not really the place to go to pick up a 2 liter of Dr Pepper (price wise) but in browsing around I found the fresh items to be really interesting. The crux I'm writing this review and the main reason YOU in the Burbs should check this place out and the best reason why I will be back is that it's the only place I know of outside of Philly that sells pints of Little Baby's ice-cream. Really unique flavors and outrageously fresh and delicious. The associates were typically friendly and helpful as what is normally experienced in these granola supermarkets. Purchasing a pint of the afore mentioned ice cream sparked a great discussion about Little Baby's, Pizza Brain and that area of Philly in general. So come out to get your creamed ice fix and support a great little store while you do it. read more

Awful, awful service and way overpriced items. Going into the door, we were not greeted with a smile or a hello, even though i said it. Their prices are crazy! 2.49 a lb for green leaf lettuce! 10.99 a lb for perch! Their milk is overpriced by at least a dollar. Pre made sushi is 11 bucks, you can get it cheaper at an actual sushi place. I've had to run in here a couple times to get last minute stuff, after my last visit, i will surely be going somewhere else. Upon checking out, the cashier didn't greet us with a hello or hi, or give us a thank you. We had to ask 3 people for a bag for our items. These aren't smarmy teenagers either, these are middle aged women. read more

Tip: They carry spices in bulk so you can spend .30 instead of $6.00 for that spice you need for one recipe. They are on the expensive side, but it's because they carry the best products. I eat lunch here regularly. They have great sandwiches, and 3 soups that rotate. The employees are always friendly, and they love to chat about whatever new food you decide to try. read more

The co-op is one of those local grocery stores that does not have much competition. I believe it's gotten by mostly by that. However, they do have some quality items - their cheese and sandwich bar is amazing. However, for anything else, such as crackers and non-specialty items, their prices are simply ridiculous. Sometimes I see the co-op as a convenience grocery store than anything else. With all that being said, I'm glad Swarthmore has a store like the co-op.p.s. There is a 10% student discount with ID, for all non-dairy products! For the most part, I would rather go to Target (1 mile away) than shop at the co-op. I just can't afford the co-op's items in regard to daily food, ingredients, and necessity. read more

Update: 6/2013 They are continually improving the store, having added a bulk department and bulk spices. They are also very consciously lowering prices on many items, and I often see better prices here than at other stores, even on simple items like broccoli. YAY! Please support this wonderful store! I am an "owner" but don't let that lead you to believe I am in any way biased. I love the concept of a co-op grocery. We do as much of our grocery shopping here as we can. You can bring your own container for sushi to help reduce stupid plastic waste. You can find awesome cheese and meats from local points of origin. You will probably run into someone you know and have a stop-and-chat. I especially like the fact they use kitchen harvest co for dealing with compostable waste. Staff is always super friendly and helpful here. Bulk items like oatmeal and lentils also much appreciated. read more

Scam. This business, as it is in no way a true co-op, has a business model to scam college kids and earthy, crunchy granola types. They claim they attempt to save the earth, but look around. Tons of materials bad for the earth. They claim to be all organic and earthy, but I've seen the deliveries. Same shit as the grocery store. Let's not forget that they attempt to charge for a bag. Never really knew how good it was until my sister started working here. She started bringing home a variety of obscure or home-made chips, sodas, dips, sushi and more. Now my family stops by often and we can't get enough! Especially that sushi, just about the best packaged sushi one can get in the area and a big variety too. I also love the easy dinners and sides they offer at the deli counter that are always delicious. Their coffee is also delicious and cheap! So skip the Dunkin Donuts next time you need a caffeine fix and try the imported flavors at the Co-Op, you won't regret it. While they of course have many organic, local, and specialty products it's not hard to find a bag of Lays or a bottle of Coke either. If it wasn't as pricey I'd shop here all the time. read more

Prepared sandwiches are to die for. This place is a great place to pick up select items that are hard to other places or if you are in a hurry. The cheese selection is wonderful. I wish they sold wine to drink on the patio with the sandwich. I love nothing more on a Sunday afternoon than to sit on the patio, eat my fresh made food and enjoy a good book. I truly do like the co op... I am not a member but I do sop here. I have family who also shops here and a family friend that gets food delivered from here. We had a close family friend who use to work there and I have enjoyed going to the events and talking with the workers. Recently there is an employee, Holly, who is so rude. She turns up her nose to you. Is not polite had poor customer service skills and doesn't make any personal connections. This is a small town local market. It thrives on personal connections and this girl pushes people away. read more

For a while I put up with the high prices and limited selection for it's convenience. The quality of much of the food is not noticeably better than the Genardis near by for most items - veggies are ok, meat, fish and cheese, are better, the rest is pretty much identical but with smaller selection and much higher prices. However they remodeled the check out area is a fiasco. Checking out is now a mess and the staff was just making it worse by being surly. read more
