I've been fighting with my wardrobe for decades. I've always wanted to show off this cool effortless look, but instead, I just run to Banana Republic or Ann Taylor Loft for the safeties. What's been in my closet are tons of safe clothes that are pretty devoid of personality. This is decidedly NOT cool. Then Stephanie and her stylist Sara popped into my life. They went through my closet and my dresser without judgment. They asked me pointed questions about how I felt about my wardrobe and what I wanted from it. I didn't know I felt sad about it until they actually asked that question. After going through everything, I learned a ton about my own style, my wardrobe and what's okay to go together. What's so amazing about this is that I feel excited now instead of dread when I look at my closet. And this was just part one. Dress for your Journey is where they come back after having reviewed what you've got, what your desired style is and what's missing, based on clothes given away from others discards. How perfect is that! They came back with fun pieces. This is what was missing! I now have clothes that are fun and reflect who I am on the inside and want to project on the outside. And they look good, not ridiculous, which is what I was sure I would look like with anything fun! I can't recommend these lovely, non-judgy, super nice people enough. And also, Sara is a magical unicorn wizard. She will put clothes together that you would never think would work and BOOM they totally do. She will make you so happy! read more

I was curious about SwapIt for years, and finally set up a time to go in and swap one item (which is an option on their website for newcomers who aren't members). How it appears to work is you can "try before you buy" a membership by making an appointment to swap one item. I'm honestly not sure why an appointment is needed because there was no one else in there when I went for my appointment and the person working in the store doesn't give any one on one attention while you shop. (I preferred this but others might want that). I brought in a nice dress for my swap (brand new with tags), and was surprised to see the condition of most of the clothes available. It's on par with Goodwill. Many things were pilly, faded, stretched out, and some just looked out of style. I took photos of the shoes to show an example of the condition of the items. I was hoping for more of a boutique experience with excellent pieces in good or like new condition. Gently worn is fine for secondhand, but a lot of these things had seen better days. I took my item and left. I can't recommend this place based on what I experienced today. read more

I completely love the concept of this place and have been a member for years. I've been able to get new work pants when my size has changed, a fancy dress for a special event, or the sweater cardigan that goes with everything. The best part is that if it doesn't work as well outside of the store, I can bring it back and swap for something else next time. SwapIt keeps my wardrobe fresh and allows me to pass along clothes that no longer fit my life to what I know will be a good home. They even participate in textile recycling so I can drop off the sad socks that have not found their mate or my kid's ripped shorts. I have been wearing a uniform of t-shirts, yoga pants, and drapey sweaters for several years now out of "dressing room dread," that deep-seated feeling of inadequacy trying to find clothes that worked for my personality and style. After a significant weight loss, I decided to "get crazy" and get some jeans to mix up my wardrobe. I booked an appointment with SwapIt, gave them details on what I was looking for, and went to my appointment. Sara took the time to find out things about me that at first I didn't think were relevant to my clothing choices but boy was I wrong! I now have jeans that fit me and flatter my figure, as well as some fun and funky outfits that suit my outgoing personality. I feel like ME in these clothes, not some generic mom in yoga pants. And I know the style is not something I will see on everyone else, because it has been cultivated just for me! read more

Starting with the positives: I walked out with a few nice pieces and some ideas about how to wear things in my closet in new ways. Their prices are crazy good--on par with Goodwill. However, the prices are excellent because, like Goodwill, they don't seem to be too picky about what they accept. I was presented with several items that were pilling badly or stained. I understand that these sessions aren't just about gaining new clothes, but I do think that's worth noting. In terms of the service itself, my stylist was very nice, but she definitely didn't read the questionnaire I filled out thoroughly before the appointment, and she hadn't pulled anything in advance. Instead she asked me to look around and see what I gravitated toward. When I told her I needed some direction, she pulled things in a variety of sizes, many of which were not remotely right for me (including, for instance, a size 2 dress when I'm a size 12). When I told her an item didn't fit because it was the wrong size, she would say "Oh it's too fitted," or "Okay, you're intimidated by that," rather than acknowledging that it was simply the wrong size. She also encouraged layering of really heavy, textured pieces, which may work for smaller folks but just adds bulk if you're on the larger side. I tried the layering techniques since I was there to learn, but they just didn't flatter me. It was frustrating that she never acknowledged when a combination didn't work. She also tried to tell me that any dress could be worn in the winter with a turtleneck underneath--this style may work for if you're going for an early 2000s vibe in a casual setting, but I was there looking for polished, professional outfits for donor meetings. Overall, it just seemed like she had a few ideas, most of which work better on smaller bodies and/or were not at all my style, and she couldn't adapt them to me. I also went in saying that I had trouble finding pants that were comfortable, but my stylist only pulled two pairs of pants during my session--both of which were too small. Otherwise we focused almost entirely on layering sweaters over dresses, which, again, did not flatter me. I'm glad I found a few nice items, and I'm sure this works if your body is an easier fit in general, but overall this was disappointing. read more

I highly recommend checking out SwapIt. Long story short is that after spending 1 hour at Ann Taylor, I had to return the 2 pairs of pants I bought b/c they didn't really look as great as I had thought in the store. One hour with SwapIt and I found complete outfits that I liked including 2 pairs of dress pants, 2 skirts, and mix and match sweaters and tops to go with them. I know what style of pants I should wear now (after having 2 kids) and where my tops should hit to not draw attention to my not-so-flat anymore belly. All said and done, my bill was less than $100! Can't beat that. I don't think I'm going to bother shopping on my own anymore. read more

First, it was super easy to book my appointment online! For $50 you get an hour long styling session, as well as 5 pieces of clothing to take home. You're charged online so no worries about paying when you're there. When I came in, Sara was very welcoming and sat down with me to talk about my styling goals. She asked some really great questions that you wouldn't get from looking up tips on Pinterest. In addition to the rack of clothes that Sara put together to create outfits for me, I brought in a poncho and a dress shirt that I was having a hard time styling. She showed me how to wear these items according to the style goals I had. She let me practice the styling on my own, like how to roll up sleeves or frame my body in the poncho, so I could check with her and bounce off my ideas. Sara's main goal, which comes through loud an clear, is for you to find what works for you and your goals! She did not push me into a particular style, but I was also very vocal about what I do and do not like. The more information you give her, the better. Taking pictures for a lookbook also inspired me to go home and play around with outfits instead of watching TV in my spare time! All in all, a great experience, for a great price, that I totally recommend - you can even gift it to someone! read more

I went in a couple of weeks ago- it was an awesome experience! I was pretty nervous, because I usually find clothes shopping pretty demoralizing, but this was incredibly fun, and cheaper than I would have spent even in most thrift stores. I brought a couple things from my own closet and Sara was able to mix and match on the fly and I loved nearly everything she had picked out for me - there was no pressure to like anything, but she really picked out great stuff. Swap It came right to my home, armed with stylists, wardrobe essentials, trendsetting know-how, and a super fun approach to updating my personal look and style. I filled out a quick survey beforehand, detailing my clothing preferences and dressing habits. Once Stefanie and her crew arrived, they had hand-picked pieces that fit my lifestyle, throwing in a few choice pieces to get me to try new looks. Sara, master stylist, paired my own clothing with new items, adding in accessories like my scarves, earrings and shoes, to create gorgeous and easy-to-wear outfits for my everyday. They also went through my wardrobe without any judgment, helping me commit to what I really like to wear and toss those items that no longer interested or suited my tastes. In the end I wound up with over 20 outfits in a "look book" album that completely takes the guesswork out of my morning routine. And as a mom and a business owner, that's amazing. I so needed a wardrobe remake after going back to work after having kids. I was so tired of the same old work outfits and weekend wear but didn't know how to update my wardrobe. Stephanie and Sara had outfits picked out for me based on a questionnaire in their new Davis square location. I was worried there wouldn't be enough selection because I'm petite (5'2") but there was! I got great fashion advice in a non-judgmental and totally not pushy way. I had the best time meeting with the SwapIt team and finding new upcycled styles to try on. The staff are super friendly and helpful as well as very skilled in helping discern what my style/tastes are. My styling appointment was very helpful and I was amazed all the items they were able to pull out that I liked in my size. This is such a great service! I would love to go to a second hand clothing store, but honestly the thought overwhelms me. I can't stand sorting through racks of unorganized clothes in every style under the sun. I end up going to my usual stores or online, but with my full time job and parenting two small children, I don't make time as often as I should. I end up wearing my small wardrobe until it's completely worn out or they don't fit well anymore. With SwapIt, I spent a modest amount, was able to take 5 items and purchased 3 others all for the price of one outfit. Plus I got some advice on how to mix up my current wardrobe with a few small tips. It was so nice to have someone to really help me find things that worked and was understanding when some choices didn't work for me. I was so excited to hear about Swap It's new venture. I loved the wardrobe review they helped me with a little over a year ago, so I leaped at the chance to check out their new brick and mortar shop, which is conveniently located steps from the Davis Square red line stop. Based on my questionnaire they had set aside a rack of outfits for me to try on, and I also got to look through the racks to see if there were other things that caught my eye. They had great suggestions for pairings that work, and are honest about what does not work so well. The fee is well worth it for I got to choose 5 items to keep at the end of the session! I've been desperately needing a wardrobe cleanout for ages and so I jumped at the chance to work with Sara and Stephanie, who were not looking to take me shopping for MORE clothes, but rather work with what I had! It was a really comfortable and fun experience, and I was able to edit down my wardrobe (a huge goal of mine) with an eye towards strategically filling in what else I need. They focused really well on my specific needs and on reworking pieces I already had to meet them, while also helping me let go of a few things that just weren't working for me. I can't believe all of the five star reviews for this place. My friend and I recently went and had a completely different and disappointing experience. We were literally brought to a freezing cold basement without heat and were given 5 different outfits to try on by a poorly dressed girl; things that totally didn't go together, shirts with stains on them, faded wrinkled items that were pilling and items that looked like what I would donate from my closet ten years ago. I don't get it! After going through our racks that we're supposedly picked out just for us, we were told we could shop the store which looked nothing like the photos above but instead was just a room in the basement with people's old athleisure t-shirts and hoodies. The sign in the bathroom advertised a $2 sale coming up and that's probably more than I would even pay for these items. There was absolutely nothing of quality to even shop from. After showing our disappointment, the girl went into a hidden back room and pulled out a few more nicer items that we could look at, but again mostly crap. The personal stylist had no style, the store was freezing and empty and the items offered for us to take home after spending $100 were not things to jazz up our closet and give us New style and confidence but rather the best we could find in a rack of nothing else. We were even told if we couldn't find 5 items, that we didn't have to and that we could leave with just 3. I'm all for supporting local woman run businesses, the website and photos seemed great but that is not what we got. read more

SwapIt is a hidden gem in the Boston area. This incredible company swooped into my home and helped me create new outfits from existing (mostly) pieces in my closet. I feel as though I went shopping and have an entirely new wardrobe and I didn't spend a dime on clothing! Their stylist has an amazing eye and puts together interesting and stylish combinations. I had the pleasure of meeting with Sarah yesterday and really loved my Swap It experience! I'm not someone who pays too much attention to my wardrobe, and I don't worry much about getting dressed in the morning, but I will occasionally see myself in the mirror or a picture and think, " that outfit doesn't work" or "those pants don't actually fit right". So I heard about Swap It and signed up at a Mom's Night Out event, and I'm so glad I made the appointment. Sarah was really nice and approachable. She prepared a lot of outfits for me , with my clothes and new clothes, answered all my dumb questions, and I left feeling like I have a much better sense of things that look good and also why. I also have tips on how to make every outfit look more or less polished depending on the situation I find myself in. And I feel like I can do it on my own now. I feel confident.
