I cannot tell you how frustrating it was to sit and wait while being told the food was "coming out" or "being plated". Where to start...at first blush this inn appears to be an older rustic charming place. We stayed in the two bedroom cabin suite. Again, when we first checked in we were impressed with the size and layout of our room. There is a full kitchen which we found out was partially stocked but the instructions indicated they did clean it and was subject to a minimum of $30 to clean it. We assumed that meant when we went to use it "someone" had confirmed it was clean. Wrong! The dishes were placed in the cupboard with food still on them! Crumbs on the counter, refrigerator had spills on it and the stove was not clean. The beds are old and in the primary bedroom the mattress lists to the right so so if there are two of you, everything rolls to the right. There is a clawfoot tub but no hook for the shower attachment so if you use it as a shower you have to hold the wand while trying to clean yourself. Towels are old and stiff. The Murphy bed is nice but it made so much creaking noise you woke yourself up when you turned over. Many strange closets and stairs leading nowhere. We had to empty our own trash as there is no daily room service. The community trash can was overflowing most of our time there. Please stay somewhere else and save yourself from the frustration of this poorly maintained property that they charge at luxury room rates. read more

This place has a comfy bed, clean sheets and towels. ZERO services! No assistance to enter room, had to call single staff person for coffee in room. Plastic melting water glass for coffee and no stir sticks. Coffee pot does not work. While I was in room a new arrival tried to enter as they were given key to my room. Filthy room with residual corn nuts on floor and filth in bathroom behind trash. Clearly no one is cleaning rooms. I have never left a review good or bad prior to this sun-standard stay. read more

This hotel is great. It sits right on Flathead Lake right in Bigfork. Don't let the exterior or even the initial stairway fool you (both are 'old'). The rooms are beautiful, especially with balcony facing the lake. You won't get a better location and view in Bigfork. Enjoy. read more

Super fun hotel/Inn in Big Fork Montana. The Swan River Inn was reccomended to us by a local resident. Location is great! It's on the river which actually looks like a lake right there outside your back door! Across the street is a restaurant, coffee shop and then some. About a block down, you have the old downtown district which is filled with art galleries, shops, restaurants, and so much more. A few fun places to check out while down there is a jam preserve place there they make the jams (and honey butters) right there in front of your eyes! Super yummy and super good! At the very end of the district (downtown area, the street) check out Lake Baked. Fun bakery with baked goods, coffee and an awesome back patio! As for the Inn, it's clean and nice. Good parking out front and across the street. We stayed in one of the suites (downstairs suite)- it was 2 full bedrooms, 2 full baths, a full HUGE kitchen open to the living room, dining room and with great views! It had a Murphy bed, twin bed and a roll away twin bed. Lots of sleeping space! Our family really loved the room and location! The full extra large kitchen made our vacation super easy! We hit the grocery store then was able to do some cooking in our room. When we go back to Big Fork, we will stay at The Swan Inn again! read more

Bit run down and not kept as clean as it should. Cleaning lady forgot to make our room the first day; and had to call the owner to have it remedied. The owner is sometimes at the hotel; but not at nights; generally. She did not help us with the TV control; never got back. Expensive rooms; handsomely decorated. However; very loud group upstairs that kept us up for our two last nights. Tried to call the owner; but she didn't answer the phone. I called her number the second night; but still no help. Was thinking to call the police! However; I went upstairs and asked them to be quiet. Why they have allowed private parties to make noise all night long is beyond me. Check out; nobody there. Called a number; but no answer and left a phone message. Poorly managed hotel. We still had a good vacation, despite two nights without good rest. For the owner of the hotel; the noisy group; ALL NIGHT LONG!!! (young, supposedly a bachelor's party) was for Friday and Saturday night (July 19th and 20th). read more

Don't waste the two hours it takes to get a sandwich in this place. Unprofessional hacks. Oh, and don't book them for ANYTHING...! This place screwed us over four months before our wedding. A YEAR out from our wedding, we signed a contract with these people reserving their rooftop space for our reception. We also put down a substantial deposit. I received a rude, short, and very curt email a month ago, almost four months to the DAY of our wedding that they double-booked the space and that we would be moved to an undesirable location. I immediately called and received assurance from the owner, Margrit, that this was a mistake and that we would have the space as per the contract. Shortly after, I received a second curt email confirming that we would not be getting the space, and that the party they booked first would get the space. From there, I emailed. I called. No one would explain to me how this had happened. No one would treat me like a human being and call me back. In fact, when I called, I spoke to the snotty, sarcastic hostess who told me this has happened before and that I should check out all the terrible reviews on tripadvisor.com. Well, I did just that, before adding my own. Also, my reception would have taken place at the EXACT same time that the party who received our space would be having their event. Oh, their food? It's okay. If you are willing to wait about 45 minutes to be seated, two hours to be served, on a Tuesday, for brunch, then this is your spot. I suppose the crappy service should have been fair warning for the piss-poor professionalism shown by the owner, and her reservation personnel. read more

Really poor inn. I specifically chose a room with a King bed. Proprietor changed our room and called it an "upgrade". We wound up with 2 Queen beds and no view. Security is poor, as the room lock is a simple knob lock. Room had detritus from previous occupants. Bathroom had a significant water leak from the sink. We were told to use the bathtub water! Try brushing your teeth using the bathtub faucet. Then the toilet handle broke, so we had to flush the toilet using the pull inside the tank. Proprietor basically said, oh well and never attempted to fix the problems. Bathroom overhead light worked intermittently and one of the wooden chair backs was broken. She also did not attempt to compensate us for a room that didn't even have basic amenities. Also, no housekeeping services. Don't waste your money. read more

Our car broke down near the area and we needed a place to stay. Swan river inn was able to accommodate us in the middle of the night and the rate was better than the motel down the street. The room was cute and the bed was extremely comfortable. Definitely helped ease our stressful night. Thank you. read more

Stayed here with my wife for a week. Margerite the owner was very nice, and the room we were in was very clean. Each room has a theme to it. We stayed in the Crystal palace... Great hot tub to soak in after beating myself up in a Spartan race. Very nice place!!!! read more

This place has great potential. The owner did a great job with design and decor. It's everything else that lacks the necessary attention to make this place great. I booked the honeymoon suite (the geisha room) for a romantic getaway with my husband. We tried, really, to just keep a positive mindset but it was hard when we felt so grossed out and uncomfortable. The carpets were dirty, there was hair in our sheets, there are cobwebs everywhere, and it's just dingy. The dark lighting is probably intentional so guests can't see all the filth. Aside from that, things we booked the room for simply didn't work. The fireplace does not work. Called the front desk and the gal tried to help but she kept telling me to use the fan remote. She even tried herself. I'm telling you, this is the fan remote. This is not the fireplace remote. Upon discovery, we say so much battery aids corrosion on the ignitor there's no way it could even work. She told us they would fix it tomorrow. It never got fixed. I am still upset about this. I asked her how to use the fountain- she said it used to work and then shrugged. Oh... I tried it myself only to discover so much mold and slime dripping from the poorer that I just couldn't continue. We aLmost left after night one but we tried to bare it. We used the jacuzzi- after cleaning it ourselves. The shower has a strange dirt smell. This place is not luxurious. Don't let the price fool you. I'd the owner just put more focus into making sure things worked and were clean and sanitary it would be great. read more

Our experience didn't include the main facility. Since the main hotel was full, we were offered a room in an alternate building down the road. We were expecting a facility comparable to the picture and description on their website. However. What we found (for $200 a night) was an older clapboard farmhouse in a gravel pit behind some buildings. We walked in to a smelly dark room with an unmade bed and a dirty towel over the chair. This was eventually cleaned up, but we were taken aback by the decor, which was -- maybe -- early castle? We did find the bed to be comfortable, but the small air conditioner on the wall was not up to the task. We were told there was a pull-out bed for our third guest, but we discovered there were no blankets to put on it. The whole experience was disappointing and over-priced. read more

This was the worst place I have ever stayed! When we arrived to our room, we found two dead mice on the floor and the trash cans were full. When we tried to change rooms, no one from the hotel would call us back or come help with the situation. When we checked out, no one was at the hotel to talk to. I want to share with you about our experience at the Swan River Inn. Yes, we did stay at the Swan River Inn as part of our honeymoon in June 2008 in the Asian-themed room, but to be completely honest, it was one of the worst experiences that we have ever had as a married couple in any kind of retreat. The room was nice, but the jetted tub (which was part of a "selling point") wasn't working at all. The first morning that we woke up, a maid came to the room and unlocked the door without even knocking. My wife and I were both unclothed, so (needless to say) it was both embarrassing and quite unnerving. Obviously there must have been a HUGE oversight in management to neglect to indicate that this room was NOT vacant, as well as to make it a policy to ALWAYS knock before entering a room. This made the rest of the morning quite rushed to get out as quickly as possible, since this made us feel like we were an inconvenience (even though it was quite a while before the required check-out time). We didn't even want to stay to check out any other amenities or walk around town. When we relayed all these events to management, it was strugged off as "no big deal" -- not even an apology. ON OUR HONEYMOON NO-LESS! This again reflects poorly on trying to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. Instead, we have never considered the Swan River Inn again as an option, nor do we recommend it to anyone who might inquire. Years later, we received an ad in our email from Swan River Inn to visit them again. We replied to the email, detailing our experience. No response. read more

Going to visit relatives in this area, we needed to spend one night in Big Fork. We had called ahead two weeks or so before to arrange a room/rooms for the five of us, and were given an off site suite called The Tudor. We arrived just in time to pick up our key at the main site before they closed for the night (I think it was about 7 or 7:30) then went to dinner in town before heading to our "suite." We finally found the place; tucked in behind an old out of business antique store, and next to an apartment. We had been told this "suite" had two king beds and a "Loft Bedroom accessed by stairs" with a Queen bed. When we walked in the front door there was ONE bed - not sure if it was king or queen - and a bunch of heavy dark furniture filling the rest of the space. Upon searching we discovered that the second "king bed" was actually the sofa/hide-a-bed (queen size). And, after finding ZERO evidence of stairs, but a LADDER to the "Loft Bedroom" we discovered NOT a Queen Bed, but a regular double MATTRESS ON THE FLOOR of a barely 4' high nook above the bathroom. The sheets on the hide-a-bed and the loft bed were very iffy as far as being certain they were clean. The loft bed had one of those fuzzy throws on it that smelled musty and a couple of thin hard pillows, and the hide-a-bed had no bedding at all except for the hideously wrinkled (questionably clean) sheets. The first of us to enter the bathroom found that there were only two bath towels, two wash cloths and one hand towel... For FIVE WOMEN! We tried searching the kitchen area cabinets for more towels and only found a stack of nasty dirty dishes with moldy gunk in them. Then to top it off, there was NO HOT WATER at all!! When we finally called Margrit (I think that was the owner's name) she was very ungracious (to put it nicely) and kept insisting that the room had been set up for two just as she had ordered it. OK... But we'd reserved it for five, and paid for five, so it was obviously her fault. She finally condescended to drive over with towels and bedding and arrived about thirty minutes later, she brought exactly three more bath towels, 3 wash cloths and another hand towel, and ONE BLANKET (no pillows) for the hide-a-bed. Then she dug behind a big old wardrobe and opened an electrical panel to turn on the breaker for the hot water - and made a snarky remark about how easy that was, like we should know where the breakers were. She left without a single word of apology or admission of her mistake. I personally slept up in the "loft" which was cruddy! the wall had years worth of graffiti all over them, and the only electricity up there (needed to recharge the phone you know) was an extension cord coming out from behind a badly fitted crawl-space cover... nice. At least it was so hot and stuffy up in the loft that I didn't need the stinky throw; I just slept on top of the top sheet. And THANK GOODNESS I travel with my own pillows!! Honestly... I've been in horse barns that were cleaner and in better repair than this "suite". I'd have loved to call it "quaint" but I just can't. read more
