Very odd dining experience
* We arrived for our 6.30 booking only to discover they had no record of it. Not a big deal; they found us a table anyway
* One of our group of five was running fifteen minutes late, which we explained, but our waiter tried to take our order three times before we just gave in and picked something off the menu for the latecomer
* At no stage during the evening were any of us asked if we wanted to order a drink. We had to go to the bar for both of our bottles of wine, had to ask for water (at one point a partially-drunk bottle of which was taken from a neighbouring table that'd just emptied) and a gin and tonic ordered with a meal had to be re-ordered after the meals were delivered
* One of our meals was completely missed. Perhaps 10 minutes after everyone else was served, the forgotten meal was delivered without apology or cutlery
* The wait staff vacuumed around the restaurant and started to turn off lights while we were still eating... at 8.30pm
I've heard good things about Suwan over the years, although this is my first visit, and I couldn't fault the food (I had pad lui suan - beef and broccoli with lemongrass - for my main and asked for it to be extra hot. My top lip was sweating afterwards so I can't complain there). None of us are princessy about our food - decent grub with a smile is all that's needed
But this was a birthday dinner and we'd hoped for a bit of a treat rather than what we ended up with: adequate food with a pretty hefty price tag and a bizarrely surly attitude
Not somewhere I'd rush back to, or recommend, and I do so love a bit of spicy Thai read more
