Let's not muck about, here: I've eaten a lot of pizza in my time. Good pizza, bad pizza, I've eaten…read moreit. Paesano's pizza is good pizza. That's it. That's all you have to know. Okay, that's not true, you can know some more stuff. Like the fact that once I discovered the Gallina pizza, I realised all my pizza dreams had come true and I would never want for another pizza topping combo again in my life. (I know you're curious: the Gallina's chicken, BBQ sauce, onion, mushrooms, pineapple and cheese aka all my favourite things). The Gallina makes for some crazy good morning-after pizza as well (because every true pizza connoisseur knows that the true height of a pizza's glory is in its cold next-day form, unless it's primarily a cheese pizza). The pizzas come in a range of different sizes, small to medium to large to family. The family pizza is daunting. Small is perfect for one person. I normally get a medium so I can have breakfast pizza the next day (for reasons stated above). I've never eaten in at Paesano, because (as other reviews have mentioned) it's a bit cramped for dining in. Also, I don't live too far away so it serves me well to call up to order my takeaway, then take a meander up the hill (checking out the awesome Hobart views en route) to collect my pizza. The only problem is then not eating (all of) the pizza before arriving home again. If only Paesano's delivered...

On my first visit to Australia, I took a side trip to Hobart. I arrived on the island just before…read moresunset and it was dark by the time I checked into my hotel. I didn't do a lot of research about eateries prior to visiting to Hobart. Instead, I decided to walk around the area and see which places piqued my interest. Walked over to Salamanca Place as there are plenty of restaurants in this area. Along the way I stumbled across Waterman's on my walk through the neighborhood. I was looking for a low-key spot and this fit the bill, so I decided to give a try. Waterman's is a beer bar/pub specializing in craft and small batch brews. Particularly of interest for me were the Tasmanian beer offerings here. The location itself is appealing as it is in an old sandstone building so the interior has a history behind it. The layout of the place consists of a main bar area in which you order your beers and food from. As for seating, there are numerous seating booths here with a wall installation illuminating light. The beers on offer are posted on a board above the bar. There is a nice array of different types of beers to choose from here. You can find the list of what is available currently on their website. In general, beer seems to be a bit more pricey in Australia and this is no different here. Though I like that they offer a smaller size than the standard pint. This is good as it allows you to try more than one beer at a time here. In addition to their beers, the pub has a food menu which includes pizza, schnitzel, brats and pub entrees (Australian name for appetizers). For dinner here, I decided to get a Bah Bah pizza ($15.90) and paired it with a 10 ounce Van Dieman Stout ($8). The stout is a dark brew and it was on the bitter side. More so than I was expecting. But fortunately the pizza helped to cope with the bitterness. The pizza portion size was huge and filling. And it had an interesting combination of ingredients including slow cooked lamb, dukkah, roasted pumpkin and feta. The lamb was tasty and had a sausage like texture. As a whole, the flavors of the pizza really go well together. Dukkah is something I have never seen before on a menu. Turns out it is a spice mix which reminds me of spices like cumin and turmeric. If you like Mediterranean food, I think you will enjoy this as it is like eating a pizza version of a gyro. If you are looking to try out different varieties of Tasmanian beers in one place while in Hobart, Waterman's is a good place to check out. I recommend getting one of the pizzas here to pair with the beer as they are sizable and delicious.

This place is just up the street from the open air market they have, so it was the perfect spot. There is both an inside area and an outside area in the back. They have plenty of games to play and a lively atmosphere, but perhaps the best treat is that men's urinals are built into a wall with one-way mirrors, so you can actually see the folks in the outside area and enjoy them having a beer right across from where you are standing. That alone was worth the price of the beer!

We have learned that if you are thinking about going make a reservation as soon as you can. When we arrived Angelo was working. We all smiled. The place was packed. Everyone seemed to be celebrating birthdays and there were mainly locals. We ordered our regular pizza. A large Fraraccio, no olives, no anchovies, add onion, capers and oregano. A simple salad with an Italian vinaigrette. The salad arrived and in its simple form was beautiful. The pizza arrived and now we know this 'ugly' pizza is delicious. It has taught us over the years to not 'judge a book by its covers!'. We ate until we almost could and then remembered the Tiramisu. We put our forks down and asked for a to go bag. It is great at room temperature and few hours later! We ordered the tiramisu, it arrive and it was art on a plate. And as delicious as we remembered. Oh my, not a morsel left and finished with a complementary limoncello delivered by Angelo. The restaurant is homey as it gets. The staff are so friendly and competent. It's like one big happy family. The food is great. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommend. Make Reservation.

As my table was at the small corner by the soda refrigerator in the front, I wish I had been seated at the communal bench. There were takeaway customers seated by me waiting for their order. As I enjoy people watching, I had thought it was the worst area of the restaurant to do just that. Fortunately, my waitress was super nice, friendly and provided helpful recommendations, for dinner and places to visit during the rest of my holiday. She made me forget about the terrible table and the guy near me who waited a significant time for his order. Due to her recommendation, I had the Bianco with the Nicolina's Special, entree portion rather than the main. My waitress made sure to warn about the amount of garlic in the sauce. The potato gnocchi and the squid rings absorbed the garlic butter sauce so well, I did not realize I was eating squid if it was not for a few crunchy bites. Although I did not need it, the smaller entree portion gave me an additional excuse to order dessert. I was ready to order my Italian default dessert which is tiramisu, but I asked my waitress for her recommendation as she has yet to fail me. I instead ordered the special which had to been concocted by a chocoholic, a chocolate pudding covered with warm chocolate sauce and served with vanilla ice cream. Enough said. I knew it would not be American style pudding. The dessert resembled a warm, very moist cake. Due to where I was seated, I could not flag my waitress. On the other hand, there were two employees huddled by the bench for table. One clearly noticed me fiddling on my phone as we exchanged eye contact. Eventually, my waitress came by to check on me.

Aiiii hello Ti Ama, I've been waiting for you and I'm so glad you're finally here…read more The crew behind the infamous Local Pizza of Berriedale have expanded into town and gotten a little glam. Think mirrorball pizza oven, think fluoro signage, think amazing pink and green and white fitouts with greenery everywhere and a Tom O'Hern mural wall and MORE disco balls, and just bloody good food. It's been over a week now and I'm still thinking about the grilled nectarine/burrata cheese/prosciutto combo that I ate selfishly and entirely by myself (surrounded by vegetarians and vegans, but whatever). Speaking of vegans, my overly restricted gf/vegan/fodmap bestie somehow managed to eat from four different plates and didn't die by the next morning, which is kind of unheard of (especially because not one of those plates was her go-to, hot chips). VOODOO MAGIC. My boyfriend's ricotta gnocchi was the best gnocchi he'd ever eaten, he declared (and also didn't share). The antipasto plate was a bit whatever but who even cares with all the other stuff that was going on. They are, of course, making some pizzas there, because with a rep like Local Pizza's they would have been set afire if they hadn't carried some options into town with them! The only negatives as far as my group were concerned were that the tunes were a little TOO pumping (but hey, they're in Salamanca now and that's the way it is in Salamanca - but could it not be? Maybe? Just a little quieter?) and the chairs that weren't booth seats were aesthetically nice to look at but actually quite uncomfortable. Tricky. I'll be back. I'll be back some time really soon, I reckon. And I'll be sitting in a booth seat. And eating that nectarine dish.
