Holy smokes! I'm blown away by the service at the Sutton clock shop! The store is beautiful tick ticking with clocks decorating every inch of the space! Breathtaking is an understatement! And they took a look at my clock and fixed it perfectly! Not only that but I took my clock to two others stores before and one said it was unfixable and the other said it would cost 250 to replace the antique hands with new ones and make it battery operated which I did not want since I wanted it to be restored in its antique glory! So when Sutton clock shop said no problem and fixed it at a very reasonable price I was blown away! Can't say enough positive things about this place! I brought in a Swiss chiming mechanical clock for repair. It was purchased by my dad about 50 years ago and even though he's gone the regular chiming served as a signature element in my mom's home as well as a constant reminder of him. The clock suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago to my mother's dismay. I brought it into Sutton not knowing what to expect but thinking it was going to cost a small fortune to repair and clean. It took them a week to check out the clock but to my surprise I received a call today telling me the clock is now working fine, a full cleaning is not required now (maybe in the future), and I can pick it up -at no cost! Which I just did. The clock was just mistreated by my mom's new aid and needed some gentle adjustments. Great news and I intend to recommend Sutton to anyone who needs their services. After 20 + years my 170 year old mantel clock with exposed Brocot escapement stopped striking and ticking. Took it to Sutton Clock Shop assuming that its clock makers would have the expertise to restore it to proper working order. I was right. Avoid this place. Overpriced repair, horrible customer service. I brought in a broken mantel clock, and the guy said he was busy but would let me know within a week what it needed. After 1 1/2 weeks I called him, he sounded distracted and barely remembered the clock--even though I gave him the ticket number. He said he'd look at it right away to give me some info. I heard nothing. I called him again a week or two later. He still hadn't even looked at the thing. After calling him several times over the course of nearly 3 months and being strung along (he NEVER called me), he told me it needed several hundred dollars of work. I took the clock back, contacted "The Clock Repair People" in Brooklyn. The guy was also busy, but promised to repair it within a month. It took three weeks and was a small fraction of the cost. And the guy was very nice. read more

The customer service at Sutton Clock Shop is wonderful. I brought in a 1920s Elgin "8 Days" desk clock that had stopped working. James and Sebastian explained that the repair could take about five weeks, as they needed, once they repaired the clock to it clock for 8-day periods to ensure that it was keeping good time. This told me that they were conscientious about their repairs. After I picked it up, the clock started to run slowly. I brought it back, and they worked on it again (another a five-week period) and then, a few weeks after I picked it up, it stopped working. Again, I brought it back, and they "revived" it (another a five-week period). Throughout all of this back and forth, they were patient and helpful. When I picked it up this last time, because they were unable to ensure that it would keep reasonably good time, they refunded the repair fee. I did not ask for this (and was simply happy that they got it to work again), as I felt that Sebastian had been thorough in trying to fix my clock. It was James and Sebastian who felt that refunding the fee was the right thing to do. I highly recommend Sutton Clock Shop. Even if you don't have a clock that needs repair, if you're into antique or retro clocks (as I am), they have a huge selection, and the shop is a clock wonderland. read more

I have had no repairs nor have I shopped here. This review is based on the quick response from the shop via email. I have a cuckoo clock that is broken and I sent a message to see if they repaired them before I brought to them for an estimate. Unfortunately they don't repair cuckoo clocks but he referred me to place that did (coincidentally it was also a place that was listed in my clock directions to go to for repairs but I was trying to avoid shipping it out). But it was not repaired I could not get my clock I had to pay $250.00 for not repaired clock. An excellent brick and mortar clock shop in an era where most people see clocks as antique time pieces that are not as valuable as their iPhone or Andrioid device. James is an affable, wise and experienced horologist. The shop has an antique ambiance that is almost nonexistent in NYC but very welcome and comforting to antiquarians like myself. The plethora of clocks, ticking away in tandem, takes the customer away to a different time and age when life was less complicated by computers and technology; it's almost fantastical, but one of the reasons why I prefer Sutton Clocks to any of the larger clock repair shops that are commercialized. My mother and I took our Huebert Herr Cuckoo clock to Sutton Clocks to fix an issue with the pendulum. Unfortunately, after two years, the Huebert Herr no longer provides warranty repairs for its cuckoo clocks, so it's the customer's responsibility to find a trained horologist, who specializes in Cuckoo clocks, to rectify any issues. As we walked into the door, James warmly greeted, asked us to describe the nature of the problem, then gave a tag to certify that we had dropped off the clock. Within a week, James called us, diagnosed the issue and fixed the clock. At the time of this review, Sutton only accepts personal checks and cash, so be mindful of these financing options when arranging for payment. His professionalism is superb and his prices are more than reasonable given the high level of specialization needed for this arcane type of work and the elite area of Manhattan where Sutton clock shop is located. James also educated us that how the clock is mounted affects how the pendulum swings. As a novice to time piece care and maintenance, this was a bit of information that was quite didactic and will help to maintain the clock for the foreseeable future. An overall wonderful experience. We also have a Howard Miller mantlepiece clock which we also dropped off to Sutton at the time of writing this review. The only issue in this area of Manhattan, as most of NYC, is the paucity of curbside parking spaces. If you are picking up a clock that James or a member of his staff has repaired, I recommend giving him a courtesy call in advance so he can package up the clock, and you can run in and quickly obtain it before NYC transit issues a double parking ticket. read more

Awful customer service. I took in an old Brass clock to have repaired (heeded a new glass put in) and was greeted by a pompous man who told me he couldn't quote me a price and kept sticking his chest out trying to show me he was in "charge". Fair enough; I was ticketed and in a weeks time I was given a call back to give me my estimate. I went ahead with the job. A week later, I hadn't heard anything so I called to find out when it would be ready and was told, "In about another week - is that all right with you?" In a very sarcastic - not customer oriented tone. I said it wasn't and started asking more questions to which I received a reply of, "Well you can always come back in and pick it up". Not the sort of answer you're looking for in a business. I ask the guy to track down the glass he had ordered and to return my phone call, fairly enough, he did this and gave me a fair and accurate estimation of when my clock would be ready. Every time I spoke to the man I could hear an annoyed tone in his voice as if I were bothering him. It was very apparent and not professional at all. No follow-through on customer service - it's as if after the initial friendly encounter they then do not have to be nice to you. I picked up the clock and noticed surface rust still on the clock face, something I had asked him to remove, as well as new black flecks underneath the glass itself. I was told that if my boss wasn't satisfied I could bring it back and have it cleaned out free of charge, I asked them to write it on my receipt, to which they agreed. I ending up having to return the clock. I'm no clock expert but my boss is, as soon as he saw it he noticed some scraping on the lower portion of the clock that was never there as well as a dent in the lower portion of the clock where there was none to begin with. The glass itself was not secured properly and would move when you pushed it on either end of the glass. The black flecks and surface dust/rust bothered him as well. When I called to say i wanted to return the glass i was told there was no refunds. I told them this was never stated to me, nor is it written on any receipt I received from them. They offered to email the store policy. After some more debate and back and forth, the other co-owner (the brains behind the operation) stepped in and said they would refund my money as well as take the glass back. When I brought it in, both these things occurred. However, they asked for my receipt to verify the amount that was due to me, then kept the receipt and refused to give it back to me or offer me anything that would show that we had just done an exchange. The owner told me he did me a "solid" by exchanging it, since his store had a no refund policy. I told him I appreciated it but I'd still like proof that an exchange happened today. He said he would "think about it" and e-mail it to me (arrogant or what?) and I could see him growing visibly upset. I told him he looked like a gentleman and up to this point he had honored his service but he should give me my receipt back or other proof that money exchanged hands and a service was rendered and he still refused and said he would not provide this. Both of the men in this store tried to intimidate me. I ended up leaving but this is not the customer service you would want to expect on a clock shop on the Upper East Side. Or anywhere for that matter. Take it anywhere else but here. read more

I kept a write up from The New York Times article written many years ago with the expectation that one day, I'd be bringing my clock here for repair. I had other repairs done elsewhere over the years and as it turned out, I was never pleased with any of them-up til now. I was very disappointed with the service I received. I believe they are biting off more than they can chew. They held onto my mantle clock for two months. When I finally received it back, it was running either way too slow or way too fast. I spent a lot of money getting my clock fixed and I felt like they really didn't care. I then took it to the Clock Repair guy in Brooklyn. He fixed it and it's been keeping very accurate time for an eighty five year old antique clock. read more
