Farmhouse Catskills - The Cafe

My bf booked a night for us here after receiving a targeted Instagram ad. He's an absolute sucker…read morefor targeted ads, and I must congratulate Farmhouse Catskills on their marketing prowess; however, the marketing strategy gives you a pretty good idea of what you can expect. This place is definitely instagrammable... but unfortunately not much more than that (at least for now). Pros: They've done a seriously beautiful job on the decor- lots of grays and moody dark blues, mid-century furnishings, and prolific use of some of the best artificial tropical plants I've ever seen. All of it is as pretty in person as it is in those Instagram ads. When you walk in, there's ambient music that matches the vibe perfectly. We didn't take a dip in the pool because it was kind of chilly, but I thought it was neat that there was a poolside DJ. It's also worth mentioning that this place is clearly very dog friendly, and as a dog-lover-but-not-owner I was happy to be able to pet so many pups on the property. And there's a decent pool table, yay! Cons: It's pretty clear that this place was sort of hastily opened in an attempt to pull in some cash before the end of the summer, without being adequately prepared and staffed. (It kind of reminded me of one of those house-flipping shows on HGTV.) In our room, one of the ceiling lights still had blue painter's tape around it. The door (which opened to the outdoors) stuck badly, and the knob was not really appropriate for the purpose- more of a closet or bathroom doorknob than something secure for a hotel room- no deadbolt, etc. We had the same troubles with the hot water that another reviewer mentioned. We had to wait almost an hour to get a cocktail at the bar because it was understaffed. I imagine there were just one or two bartenders serving the bar, restaurant, and pool areas. (For the record, the cocktails were nice, though, as was the bartender.) At one point a man who seemed to be more or less in charge of things (but somewhat overwhelmed) was quite rude to us and another couple we were socializing with in the bar area. The morning we were to check out, a housekeeping person opened the door to the room at around 8:30 AM when we were still asleep. She apologized and said, "Oh, my manager said you already checked out!" We said "No, isn't check out at noon?" She confirmed and went on her way. No big deal. But about an hour later, ANOTHER person barges into the room and says her manager told her we had already checked out. (I'm guessing that her manager was the aforementioned overwhelmed guy.) In short: This place has definite potential- again, so pretty!- but it seems the focus right now is aesthetics over experience. At a lower price point I'd probably call it four stars, but at $300/night in the middle of nowhere, I'd expect better management and service. I'd be interested to see if they work out some of the kinks next summer.

The owner Chris has put all his heart and soul into this amazing property, incredible bar and fantastic restaurant and it all just works. Run to this place and don't hesitate for a second, you will be amazingly surprised by what he has built here! Cheers to Chris and the fantastic staff at Farmhouse! My new go-to!

Well things have sure changed here and for the better. No more dirt and grime from the frackers who are now told to remove their filthy boots before entering, thank goodness! As a result, we had a very pleasant stay here for three nights. The staff was great and the breakfast bar was well stocked and regularly attended to. Our room was super clean and the cleaning staff was terrific. The next time we find ourselves in the area we'll definitely stay again!

Although we tried to be, we weren't the quietest bunch with 10 kids excited and running around but the manager Connie was so gracious and nice to us. The complimentary hot breakfast is great. The kids loved the pancake maker. They had Egg omelets and various types of sausages which were great. In addition, they had muffins, bagels, a variety of cereals, juices yogurts and other snacks. So much better than the continental breakfasts that the other places put out. They redid the pool area recently and it's so much brighter than it was last time we stayed. The chlorine levels were a little high but at least we knew the pool was sanitized. We are so looking forward to coming back. Thanks for the impeccable service!!!

Every inch felt welcoming and comfortable for our family of four. The waterfall at the Stratton Falls campus was absolutely stunning and incredibly relaxing. Falling asleep to the sound of the water from our deck made the experience feel truly special. Even with the cold weather, there were still plenty of activities to keep our family entertained. Between the waterfalls, game room, Netflix, life-sized chess, foosball, air hockey, the Crooked Cabana bar, hot tub, and dry sauna -- this place truly has it all. A special thank you to Chuck for making our Mother's Day weekend even more memorable than we could have imagined. From the cookies and coffee to the kids' welcome packets, every detail reflected warmth and care. We could not imagine a more family-friendly and welcoming experience. This was our third stay here, and it somehow keeps getting better every time. We already cannot wait to come back again and bring even more of our family with us next time.

Our bagged breakfast was missing a few items we ordered. That really was not ideal, as we had a long drive ahead of us to the city. So we ended up having to stop to get a couple of things since what we planned on having was not there. Also, the wait for someone to be at check in was long. We went to the Stratton falls first accidentally. It's 2.5 miles from where our location was. Apparently, the guy at check in saw us and knew we were at the wrong property (they were full at that location) but didn't tell us when he saw us. (We didn't see him). When my son finally found someone (that guy) he said "I saw you when you came in and knew you went to the wrong place...". Ok.... So you just let us stand around for 12 min, before we went searching for you? He wouldn't even give us more than "it's down the road." Directions to the other place. That guy was an awful first impression. The lady at our location was lovely, but he made the initial feeling stick with me. So, customer service sucked because of him. I had friends that came to meet us from 30 min away and had to wait an additional 20 min thanks to that guy. Would I suggest it? If the service continues like it was... no. Fun themes though. I hear they moved to new ownership, so maybe that's what is going on.

Do not fear. This is a good motel unless you're really fussy. It's a bit of a throwback if you're…read moreover 50. Remember when you drove long-distance on vacation with your parents in a station wagon and would need a motel along the way? You rarely reserved in advance and there were relatively few chains besides Holiday Inn and Best Western. Everyone carried AE Travelers Cheques. That illuminated "Vacancy" sign from the highway let you know there was a room to be had for weary travelers. Well, this is it. I wanted a hotel about an hour south of Utica for a particular night to avoid too much driving the next morning. Sidney/Bainbridge was exactly the spot on my route. I'd booked it over the Super 8 on the highway based on reviews and not wanting to detour all the way to Oneonta since my reason was to save time the next morning. I arrived at 10:30pm, as planned. You call a number from the office and the owner/family/staff "come down" and check you in. They actually live there--great safety feature for a female traveling alone. My room was clean and very comfortable, if spare and exactly as advertised. Great value too. It did not smell musty. Bath amenities and towels were nice quality. It had a microwave and refrigerator and flat-screen TV, but sadly no coffee maker or even a glass or ceramic coffee mug to heat water (I'd brought a tea bag...), sigh. I'm quite sure they'd have accommodated a request, but I wasn't going to ask at 10:45pm. I will confirm some other reviews: it does seem to cater to people who work on the road and get up early. I suspect some are regulars M-Thurs. There appeared to be a communal space with a gas grill outside (great for group travelers or work teams). I did hear the person in the room above me--not loud or annoying, but it might be for someone not used to apartment living. A freight train came by at 6:30am (I'd gotten up at 6, so no big deal). There are no late night dining options, but there are some gas station/markets to procure something if you need and didn't bring. Early the next morning I awoke to some bird song. The Susquehanna River is literally just behind the motel (well down hill--no flood worries and the river was in flood-emergency when I was there). The delightful surprise was the cute coffee and breakfast/lunch options in Bainbridge, which I definitely recommend. If you're early enough in the evening, there are plenty of dinner options. Because of the proximity to parks and natural areas, this would be a fantastic vacation motel for several days or even a week on a limited budget. Suggestions for improvement: coffee mugs and coffee maker in the room and a black-out curtain for the front window. I turned out the porch light in front of my door, but the light from the neighboring door was on all night and illuminated my room from the gaps in the shade. I forgot an eye mask, not that it should be needed.
