I've been on the hunt for a sushi place to take my daughter. We usually go for her birthday and yesterday was her big day. I asked for local recommendations in a mom's group and this place was mentioned more than once. I really liked that this place offers an All You Can Eat option, especially since we usually order 6ish rolls. We arrived right when they opened at 5pm and were seated immediately. Unfortunately the sushi bar was closed, so we didn't get the option to watch our sushi be prepared. There was a female waitress and a male waiter that were both helping us. The female was not friendly or helpful, even though I mentioned we were there for the first time. The male was extremely nice and we preferred him. Waiting time: We waited about 15-20 minutes for our food each time - and we were one of the first parties there. Keep that in mind, as they do get busy. We started out with 4 rolls - Snowball, Dancing Roll, Rock n Roll and New Happy. All were great and we were ready for more! Our next round, we ordered another Rock n Roll, Caterpillar and Hurricane. Also great rolls! For the 7 rolls and the AYCE pricing, we paid $42! I really liked the pricing and think we will be back. This was well worth our 20 minute drive! read more

I really wanted to like this place but the quality of sushi is really subpar. For the all you can eat we ordered the Godzilla roll that was supposed to have albacore tuna in the middle. One of the pieces was all rice and no fish in the middle! And the rest had a tiny drop of canned tuna albacore! It was not raw. The presentation was beautiful but deceiving. One roll had tempura sushi in the middle but it tasted old. They also don't use the short grain sushi rice. We also ordered tempura veggies and all we were served was tempura sweet potatoes and butternut squash. There was no broccoli, onions, asparagus... or any other type of veggie. I typically avoid all you can eat sushi places because I know the quality is not as great but my friend wanted to come here. Also, on Saturday lunch they make you pay the dinner price. It was $25 and not worth it in my opinion. Hope this place can learn to make better tasting sushi. Not just sushi that looks pretty. read more

If you want decent sushi in large quantities at fast speed, then come here. If you want some esoteric roll topped with the foam of some rare fish, then this probably isn't the place for you. So I came in after the lunch rush and got a Hybrid roll, which was spicy tuna and shrimp, as well as a tempura-fried roll and a bowl of edamame. It was good. The rolls are rather large sized, so I'm glad I only got two. All of that plus a Coca Cola set me back about $25 plus tip. All in all, I was happy and I left satisfied. There are generally pretty low expectations about an AYCE Sushi place. We were hungry, we wanted sushi, they were there. We were pleasantly surprised!! Place is decorated nicely and it looks like capacity is big enough to support quite a few tables and some seats at a sushi bar. Being the year of the 'Rona, the bar is closed and the tables are spread nicely. It was a Friday night in Layton and while there was a bit of a wait, it wasn't painfully long. The menu for AYCE is sizeable with a good selection of proteins. It's NOT the basic fare of Tuna or "Krab." We ordered 6 different rolls, some unagi nigiri, and some hamachi nigiri. All of it excellent. You can order individual items off of the sushi menu if you wish and there is also some standard Chinese dishes to make sure everyone at the table can find what they like. We will put this in to the regular rotation. Good value and excellent sushi. read more

Food was ok. All I can say is, if you are there for the sushi rice, you are definitely in for a treat. The amount of rice they put in the niji is nothing shy of over generous. Order 3 nijis in an all you can eat, you will be more than over stuffed. You can't even taste the fish because they jam packed so much rice. Even the sushi at City Buffet only packs half the rice Sushi Ya do. What a shame, would have a higher rating and more customers if they cut their rice in half and that's still a lot of rice. read more

All and all it's okay I guess, the rolls I ordered seemed to have a lot of eel sauce and mayonnaise dressing. I asked for ponzu sauce and they didn't have any which was a bummer. Utah is about 20 years behind with a lot of stuff I hear. I'm from Orange County and the food/roads here are terrible by comparison. Service staff are nice at sushi ya. I can't believe this place doesn't have more stars. We ordered this via Doordash and oh my gosh were we surprised. I had the salmon bento box and my husband got the chicken. So much food! By the time I finally took a picture it was almost gone. Osaka has always been my go to for a salmon bento but not anymore. The salmon was fresh also it didn't look like a small little frozen square of fish. It was thick, flaky and well cooked. I mean look at the picture and the big chunks of fish! I was reading reviews on this place before I decided to go. Looked like it had a bunch of bad reviews on service and quality of food. Well, they where kinda right. Went in with my wife because she just delivered our son and can finally eat sushi again. Was looking for an all you can eat place here in Utah. (We're from out of state). But didn't seem like there was any, besides this. Got there around 6pm. They sat us quick, gave us our drink, ginger and wasabi. Waitress took our order when we received our drinks. First two rolls finally gets to us at 6:50pm. Still waiting on sashimi. Sashimi gets to us at 7:40pm. Took us like 10 minutes to finish it all cause we where starving at that point lol. Ordered some more. We never got it cause we got up, paid and left. 8:45pm. The sushi wasn't as bad as gas station sushi, nor was it the worst I've ever tasted. It was ok, but I've had way better sushi elsewhere. I've noticed that the food service industry here in Utah is extremely slow paced. I've notice that even getting food in a drive thru is really slow. So I'm not sure if these are acceptable times here. read more

Excellent. I was very pleased. On par with some of the best sushi I've had. Nearly didn't come because of the lower Yelp rating, but I'm soo glad I did. Loved the fried rolls, excellent variety. They were all tasty, but my hands down favorite was the Las Vegas, with the spicy Godzilla being a close second. The Rocky Mountain was incredible. Sushi Ya is our favorite hometown sushi spot!! My favs are; the 49er (tempura shrimp, green onion and avocado), it's crunchy, creamy and has a nice punch from the scallion; and the Hula (spicy crab, topped with sweet nuts and house sauce). The spicy crab is mild, which is good for my wimpy tongue. The nuts are sugared pecans and the house sauce is sweet, kind of like teriyaki. I don't care for seaweed, so I request soy paper instead. It's a dollar more per roll, but I'm worth it. We've never had anything that wasn't good or that didn't taste fresh. Their tempura shrimp and vegetables are also on our table often. The restaurant is clean and efficient. Lots of choices. My husband always gets the "all-you-can-eat" option, which is a nice savings. We are huge fans! read more

Came here to eat lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The place was nice and clean. I always start with a five star and remove stars along the way. So first things first customer service was slow. I had to flag down the waitress to order (1 star removed), secondly one of the waitress told us the lunch bento can be ordered even if the menu states that is Monday- Friday only, for $1 more it can be ordered. So another lady took our order and we wanted to order the bento lunch but she said we couldn't order it on a Saturday, but on the next page you can order the lunch entree.....which was basically the same thing with what the First Lady told us (another star removed). Overall the food was good, not the best but good enough to satisfy the palate. Left a 3 star for their food portions, very large. Enough for two. read more

From the time we sat down things got weird. The waitress brought over a pile of menus, chopsticks and DIY sushi ordering menus. At Sushi Ya you're expected to write everything down yourself and hand it to the waitress to take to the back room to be prepped. There is a sushi prep station in the dining room, but for some reason everything was prepared in the back. When the sushi was presented it looked like it had been prepared the day before. I ordered the Rainbow Roll. Funny thing is, I don't recall ever seeing the color brown in the rainbow. It certainly didn't look fresh, and smelled extra fishy. The waitress explained it was brown because it was close to the fish's stomach. Seriously. She said that. Then, she never offered to have it remade or taken off the check. The best part of my visit was the overpriced, but very cold Sapporo. I'd avoid this one. Ok... 30 minutes later my stomach feels sick. Stay away. read more

Although I took the alternative route and only ordered the veggie rolls.... the other 3 people in the group opted to go all out and feast on as much as they could.
