The service however wasn't the best, our server took a while for her to check in with us! She would constantly walk by us and not check in but would check in on the other table across from us. Service here has always been something I'd rant about for days. Rant because they can remain horrible and not deter hordes of customers who come here for what actually matters: the food. They forget things, they don't follow up on things, they come up with excuses for the former two etc, etc, etc. I remember well how one server back in the day looked me up and down and said that I couldn't beat the current champ of the $1 Monday night nigiri because I was skinny. It amused me and then left a burning bitter bile in my mouth. Wait, this person thinks I can't beat someone because I'm "skinny" and he had put away 60 nigiri and was miserable after? When I asked if she wanted me to prove her wrong, she nonchalantly replied that I would be wasting my money. She was talking to someone who can put away 2 whole Costco chickens in one sitting easily while consuming all kinds of sides and still feel there was more room to stuff. A smart server would have made tips that night taking on that challenge and benefited the restaurant in the process. But no, that's what dumb front of the house people do. Besides the other visits of forgotten orders blamed on the kitchen again due to failed input, there is this ongoing, "oh, let me find out" with a face of "oh shoot, I forgot because I'm an idiot" look. My favorite? I asked for water twice to be refilled and it never happened. Two visits with the same thing. Now you would ask why they still had 4 stars? Well, it's because their 5 star review is dinged by the idiots up front. But I didn't come here to have great service. I came solely for the food. So thankfully we are on the same page that you can have incompetent front of the house and still have a full house. It's always about the food. You can have perfect servers and if the food was nothing but crap, expect a forever empty restaurant. Here's the take: It's not for purists who know the art. From cuts to selection, it doesn't take one to know it isn't from apprentice to anything true Japanese. However, it is fresh most of the time and truly appetizing if you're a fan of the Korean take to this cuisine. Dead giveaway? White fish with some form of pickled onions. Dead freaking giveaway. Fresh is king and once again, it's all about Monday nights. Join the Zerg herd and binge to guiltless satisfaction. It's a buck then. A buck we have too many of to waste of similar less fresh imitations. Most of all, it's Monterey. If someone from the kitchen side actually tries to get it right, you'll see results. We came here at 5pm on a Friday, and it was already busy, clearly a popular place. We were seated no problem, and I really appreciated that they have a space heater near the door. Normally when the door opens you'd get a rush of cold air, but instead the space heater keeps things nice. The menu is full, with some non-sushi options in addition to all the regular and special rolls. As a vegetarian, I really liked that there were plenty of veg options and they are in green font on the menu -- just be sure to double check that they are made fully vegetarian when you order (e.g., the agedashi tofu is in green font but standardly comes with bonito flakes). I haven't been to this, my favorite sushi restaurant in some time because, you know life happens. I dropped in today, tired and hungry. They didn't disappoint. I got the lunch special, only $14 for two choices and they were perfect! Including a delicious miso soup, salad and ideal rice. 4 big pieces of fresh fish and beef teriyaki. We ordered two appetizers and four of their specialty sushi rolls (Rainbow roll, Coco Loco Roll, Philly roll and a fire cracker roll). Short version: Good food, fast service. Longer version: We ordered take-out while in town for a short vacation. The order was simple - several salmon nagiri, rainbow rolls, and another roll that I don't remember. The salmon nagiri used big delicious pieces of fresh salmon, the rainbow rolls were good, and the other roll was pretty good too. We ordered takeout from here an hour before closing. I was surprised at how busy this place was when we arrived to pick up our takeout order. They were hit with a ton of orders right before closing. Shout out to the front house who kept the things moving and ensured people wouldn't wait long for their orders to be made. The food itself was pretty good considering it is takeout and our order was placed a bit before closing. We originally asked for amaebi sashimi, which they did have in stock. However, within a few minutes of placing our order, we received a call from the restaurant stating the chef didn't think the amaebi looked fresh anymore and didn't feel comfortable serving it. I appreciated the call very much and am grateful they kept our safety and health in mind while making our order! The man taking our order made a few suggestions based off of our sushi preferences to make up for the loss of our amaebi sashimi. He was very sweet and helpful especially considering the fact it was the last hour before closing and the restaurant was busy taking in last minute orders. The rolls themselves are pretty good. The alien roll was probably the highlight of all the rolls we ordered. The crab was delicious and made the roll feel decadent and very filling. The hamachi Kama was huge. I didn't like the sauce it came with as it was a bit too sweet and thick for my liking. My fiancé didn't mind the sauce. He found it pretty tasty and the fish itself was very flavorful. Customer service is average, good amount of seating, and everything we ordered came out hot and fresh. The menu is massive and they offer endless varieties of sushi rolls. The portions are big as well. The takoyaki and assorted tempura came out piping hot and tasty! We ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl, and 3 sushi rolls. The deep fried rolls were on the heavy side so I'd try a regular roll next time. If you want to try a deep fried roll, order the Big Sur roll. We couldn't finish everything and ended up taking the leftovers home. While this isn't the best sushi restaurant in the area, what they serve is still taste good and it's more catered to western taste buds vs authentic Japanese sushi restaurants. The fish taste good and not old, cheap, or fishy. Def recommend and will return! read more
