I ordered chicken teriyaki from here with extra chicken. I really liked that it came with zucchini as one of the vegetables. Don't feel like I see that too often in Japanese cuisine. They sell everything from bento boxes to sushi to poke bowls! I tried their salmon toro sashimi and nigiri. It was so soft and tender it melts in your mouth with a great torched top. I also loved their rock shrimp tempura ($14). You can't go wrong with any of their rolls. I tried a bunch and they were all amazing. Good ratio of fish to rice. It was a rainy Sunday in Manhattan and my friends and I had very ambitious plans to go to Woodbury to look for a replacement vest for a friend who somehow lost his favorite one somewhere. I am not one to ask how that was possible since I have lost coats in winter and left shoes behind at the gym. This place has great service, cute ambiance interiorly, and the food exceeded my expectations with great quality fish and an authentic feel! I stopped by after work about 7:30PM with a work colleauge. All of the other restaurants nearby were packed, though this place had plenty of open seating (it made me a bit skeptical). But it turned out great. We had a few different rolls, and also some dumplings. All of them were pretty typical American-style sushi. Pricing was reasonable. Service was excellent, especially for a place that I figured would be a lower-service environment. I've tried a few different sushi restaurants when visiting NYC, but Sushi Star blew everyone else out of the water. It is surprisingly affordable for how delicious the sushi is. The only platter that was bad was the spicy salmon which was fishy. The most popular rolls were the shrimp tempura, the eel, and then the vegetarian. I came here because a friend recommended it to me. This restaurant is very small and quiet, a very random feeling spot. We ordered the Peanut Avocado Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Tofu Poke. Everything tasted great, especially the rolls. The rice was cooked very well and the filings were flavorful. The bowl came with (I think) a ponzu sauce, which was great! Sushi Star is a "meh". I like the coziness of the dining area and the friendly staff, but perhaps they should switch to a different cuisine keeping the atmosphere and location, just get out of the sushi business. Tables are a bit small and tight, but again a nice place to sit and enjoy. It is okay and actually kind of cool when a waitress takes your order without writing it down. I ordered five different nigiri sushi and a Spider Roll. What I got was a Dynamite Roll. While I like Dynamite Rolls, had I wanted a Dynamite Roll I would have ordered a Dynamite Roll. It was a bit more pricier than the Spider Roll, but not liking conflict I just ate it and tried to enjoy. I do not like the conflict of sending things back, the potential of "you said, no I said" discussion and then the attention in such an otherwise nice, elbow-to-elbow seating area. But here's the thing. The Dynamite Roll was not all that good and the nigiri was less than fresh. Eel sauce is already way over used and is slathered way too much on sushi in America. So given the issue with the Spider/Dynamite Roll and the less than good quality sushi, I'd recommend you pass on this place. Such a shame as it otherwise has such great potential. read more

This is a good and quick spot to grab sushi if you are in the area. It's on a relatively quiet street compared to what's around there! They understand Gluten Free and do carry GF soy sauce packets!! A huge deal for Celiacs who visit here. I think I ordered the spicy salmon roll and the salmon avocado roll. These are my go-tos at any sushi spot. 5 years later and this is still my go to restaurant whenever I'm too lazy to prep lunch the night before lol My go to order is still the salmon 3 ways because I love the aburi salmon nigiri that it comes with but today I decided to go with something a little different. I got the aburi salmon roll, which has spicy imitation crab meat and cucumber in the center and topped with seared salmon and spicy mayo. This is a great locally owned sushi place. Their prices for what you get are better than anywhere I have seen in the city. I have taken many people here and they all have liked it. Sushi Star is a convenient spot to quickly pick up some sushi, but it can get a little expensive. Usually what gets me in the door is some sort of discount through LevelUp. There are 2 options for choosing your food at Sushi Star: pre-made or order off the menu. I usually do the former because it's faster. The last time I went, I got a box set for $12.95 (the least expensive non-vegetarian box set) which had 12 roll pieces with a little bit of edamame. When I went to check out, she said it also came with soup or salad. The last time I got a box set (probably a year earlier), that wasn't part of the set. It's a much better value now with the salad included, but you can still get a 2 roll combo lunch special at sushi restaurants elsewhere in Hell's Kitchen with soup *and* salad for less. The quality of the sushi was fine and the salad was good, but it's hard for me to justify spending so much when there are other options nearby that I think deliver similar or better sushi and more value. read more

The server is so sweet and friendly but that's literally the end of the nice things I can say about this restaurant.
