My friend says this is the best sushi restaurant in the Bmore area, and she's not kidding! All the fish was so fresh with a high fish to rice proportion. One of our favor spots for sushi. This has a wonderful location right in the lakefront of Lake Kitt. The variety of options is wonderful. From sushi to teriyaki there are loads of options. The spicy grill is our favorite sushi option. There is a bar to sit at where you watch the sushi get made. There are also traditional rooms where you remove shoes and sit on the floor. We have not eaten here in a few years, but we were disappointed in some of the food. The tuna sushi was good, the fish bone miso was not good at all (the normal miso was good). The small dinner salad was nothing special and worse than most Japanese Hibachi Restaurants. The biggest disappointment was the teriyaki steak which was tough and dry and the broccoli was undercooked. The service was good (we sat in a private room). The Restuarant was clean and the ambiance was nice. Now the worst part. For this meal we paid $600 (4 adults and 2 kids). Definitely not worth it with the quality of the food. I stumble upon this place after having a craving for some sashimi and found this lucky gem. In the beginning I thought it was some industrial complex when driving through but once exiting the car and walking towards the lake did we notice the restaurant. The cleanliness and the Japanese planter courtyard entrance made you feel transfer back into a nice dojo of a restaurant. The waitresses wearing kimonos and the staff is chef outfit and the simplest Marie kondo simplistic setting made the place very warming. The staff were super attentive and we were able to strike a conversations in mandarin and Korean. Looks like the ownership was changed a long time ago but it looks like the quality of food and service has continue to maintain its spectacular delicacy. We ordered the chirashi and the 20 piece sashimi boat. I must say the quality is amazing and pretty decent. Very fresh indeed and we ended the evening with matcha ice cream. Service was polite and friendly. Maybe a little slow but it looked like a slow day. It's right in the path that wraps around the lake so you can people watch from the windows. We were sat without a reservation right away. The only real drawback was the food. It's good but not great, especially for the price. Pickled vegetables (oshinko) was great, but $5 is still a lot for a little side. The teriyaki chicken lacked flavor and was pretty rubbery. The spicy tuna tartare had a great flavor, but still a small portion for $18. The rolls were definitely decent, but again rather pricey. Would come back if in the area and looking for a view, but wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Came here with my friend and got seated immediately for dinner. We ordered salmon and toro nigiri and spicy grill roll and Fourth of July roll. The nigiri was super good and they put a large piece on it which makes it more worth it and it tasted very fresh. We always order spicy grill roll which is so delicious as always. Then we tried a new roll Fourth of July as it comes with many different fishes which was highly intriguing. This roll was really savory and filling as well. read more

It's nice that they're located on a lakefront with plentiful parking at the town center but the sushi here is average at best with their basic appetizers being pretty low quality. The shumai was accompanied with what looked like swamp water and the food generally was extremely overpriced. One of their specialty rolls looked like it had congealed cheese for a topping and the raw fish was lukewarm and shouldn't have been. The menus and table tops were sticky and this is a sushi restaurant with a dirty bathroom and flies swarming the tables. The service we just encountered on a Thursday night dinner visit was deplorable and while the kimonos are a sweet touch, that is where the hospitality from this place ends. With so many other options in the area, I'd sooner visit McDonald's over Sushi Sono where hopefully they'd be a bit more kind and less flies infested. read more

This is one of the longest standing sushi restaurants in Columbia. They have always served some of the best sushi here. And when I say sushi, I am NOT talking about those fancy sushi rolls made for Americans, I am talking about the real Japanese style sushi, because this is the only way you can tell the true skills of the sushi chefs. And here, you can find some of the finest. From plating, freshness of the seafood to the size of the fish slices and taste of the sushi rice. Props to chef Jason , chef Yang, and the younger chefs who crafted the deliciousness behind the counter. So we have been coming to Sono for many years, no restaurants is perfect, I've had several undesirable dishes here as well. Like I said earlier, those all happened to be the none Japanese traditional dishes so I don't fault them on it. Price is on the high side if you are like me and going for uni, toro, salmon belly. You can definitely stick to budget friendly items as well to order the common items. Staff were super efficient given how busy and crowded this place can get. Mistakes happens and they do correct them on the spot. I call this good service. You will wait for a while if you come during peak hours without reservations. Convenient parkings options nearby . I came by with friends before a concert at Merriweather. We picked the restaurant randomly but I was surprised by the quality from the moment we walked in. The servers are extremely kind and welcoming, and the decor makes you feel like you're in a real sushi house. The sushi was amazing. High quality ingredients, well prepared, and good prices. Some of our group got non-sushi dishes too, and they came with salad and miso soup. The quality was high and again, it seemed like a great deal for the price. I definitely recommend trying one of their sushi boats! I liked the ambiance of this place! It reminds me of a Japanese place we went to in Hawaii. As for the food I enjoyed what we got mainly the lobster roll. However, except for the dragon roll I was not a fan of that one. Would go here again since it's by the lake though! It's a good area to be in! read more

PLEASE READ AND SHARE: My Awful Experience at This Restaurant To all customers and management, I am writing to express my outrage and deep dissatisfaction with the service I received at Sono Sushi during my visit on March 23rd, at 8:30 pm. I don't usually post reviews, but this experience went far beyond what I can tolerate. The service was completely unacceptable, and I feel it's my responsibility to warn others and demand accountability. Here's a detailed breakdown of what happened: 1. The waitress snatched the order sheet from my hand in a very bossy and rude manner. I brushed it off at first--I wasn't happy, but I tried to stay calm. 2* Then, there was a hair in my salad. I asked for a replacement without making a scene, but instead of offering an apology, the waitress coldly replied "OK." This is not OK. A simple "sorry" was the least she could have said. We're paying for our food, not begging for it. 3* No one checked on us during the meal. I needed a few extra things, but the waitress never returned until the very end, when she casually asked if everything was okay. By that point, our mood was already ruined, so I didn't even respond. 4* Blatant favoritism: What made it worse was seeing her being friendly and attentive to other tables while treating us with complete indifference. It was obvious and incredibly disrespectful. The Worst Part: Despite all this, I still left a $10 tip on a $131 bill, which was more than generous for the poor service we received. But what happened next was beyond belief: 5 * The waitress followed us outside and gave us dirty looks. This behavior was aggressive, confrontational, and completely unacceptable for any establishment, let alone a respected sushi restaurant. 6* My wife and I immediately returned to address this behavior. We explained why we left a reduced tip, and instead of apologizing or acknowledging her poor service, the waitress told us: "You should do carry-out. Don't come to the restaurant." No apology. No accountability. Just more arrogance and disrespect. Unacceptable Behavior, No Apology: Not once did she apologize for her behavior or acknowledge her poor service. This kind of attitude is beyond unprofessional--it's insulting. Management Must Take Immediate Action: I have been a loyal customer of Sono Sushi for years and have had many positive experiences with my family in the past. The food and sushi have always been excellent. But good food cannot make up for horrible service and disrespect. I strongly urge management to review the security footage from that night to confirm my complaint. If this level of service continues, you will lose loyal customers like me. I will also be sharing this experience with my community and advising friends and family to stay away until these serious issues are addressed. Good food can't make up for bad service, and this experience left a very negative impression. I hope this matter is addressed so that future customers don't encounter the same treatment. read more

I decided to go here for dinner before heading to the arcade nearby. The service at the restaurant was good and we got sat quickly, but the food was only okay. The Neptune Garden Roll was a great light bite to start the dinner and then we got our spicy salmon tartare. The salon was fresh, but nothing special. Also our Sushi Moriawase was mediocre. The tuna wasn't fresh and nothing stood out to us. We were sadly disappointed as we've had other sushi in the DMV area that has been much fresher and better tasting. 3 stars for the great location by the lake and good service , but 2 stars knocked down for the low quality of food. read more

Sushi Sono is definitely one of the restaurant gems in the Columbia, MD area. Located in the Lakefront area, it's tucked away in the corner in a cozy location. The menu finds itself on the pricier end ($23 for a chicken teriyaki), but when you get each dish, it's one of those places where you feel like they really paid attention to quality. We went for dinner around 5:00 and had the chicken teriyaki, Nabe Yaki Udon, Dragon Roll, and the Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll. Everything was very tasty with the Nabe Yaki Udon probably being our favorite. The soup had depth and richness with an attention to flavor subtleties. Knocked one star because although the quality of the food was great, the service was a bit inconsistent. It was hard to get the attention of the staff when we needed anything throughout the meal. All in all, the restaurant is a staple in the community and one of the best places to get sushi in the area. The non-sushi items on the menu are not on there just for show and are impressive in their own rite. Will 100% be coming back! Decided to stop in for lunch after shopping at Columbia Mall nearby, and what an amazing decision that was. This Japanese spot is a little tucked away, but that means it has really nice views of a small lake and lots of sun coming in the large windows, which sets up a nice afternoon vibe. We had the gyoza as an appetizer, multiple rolls, as well as the tempura udon. The sushi was to die for - the salmon roll was fresh and amazing. Don't come at me for liking this place. Yes it's expensive. Yes the view of the lake is nice and calming. Yes the servers aren't Japanese even if it's a Japanese restaurant. Yes it's right near Whole Foods which is probably part of why it's expensive. In comparison to the other sushi restaurants in the area, I think this place has enough ambiance things going on to justify the price. Also where else am I going to get eel avocado with that much green on it and thickly sliced eel? Salmon sashimi (ate it too quick) was thick, melt in the mouth, and delicious. Sushi Sono has been a favorite for family celebrations over the years. We hadn't been this year and made reservations for my birthday dinner. I dont know how the quality of our entrees decreased so significantly. The seafood and chicken tempura was barely edible. My mother is Japanese and besides that I have eaten at great restaurants serving tempura and we know it is all about the batter and at times panko bread crumbs. The batter was a flat batter similar to a pancake batter. The beauty of the plating was non-existent...we couldn't eat it. The veggies were not cut properly and resembled lumps on the plate. My niece ordered teriyaki steak rare..and came out medium. It was not sliced and arranged on her plate and it came with three almost raw pieces of broccoli. We also ordered sushi, edamame and gyoza which was fine. But the salad lettuce was large and the dressing did not have that ginger kick. What the hell? Our bill for four came to 240.00. I should have went to Hunan chinese restaurant or Eastern Moon in Ellicott City where the tempura has a crispy panko batter. New chef? New management... I dont know. But dont waste your time or money if you are ordering an entree. read more

Great Sushi and service. Sushi Sono offers delicious traditional style sushi next to a wonderful park and lake that makes for a great walk and meal. Feeding into the traditional food is servers dressed in traditional cloths and the decor consisting of Japanese themed art. Prices are a bit high, but Sushi Sono's sushi comes in large pieces that balances quantity with quality. If sushi is your focus on the trip, I recommend ordering individual pieces a la cart instead of the packaged meal combos. The fish I got from my previous Sushi Combo and Sashimi combo was good, but a few unexpected pieces didn't mesh with what I was in the mood for. So unless you're ordering a major plater to take home, go with individual selections. If you are looking for takeout, whether it is for yourself or a large gathering, Sushi Sono has excellent options at reasonable prices. If you are planning to serve a larger plate of sushi, best call as early in advance as you can, as it takes them time to prepare large orders. Service is king as Sushi Sono. Every server I've had has been upmost professional and friendly. If you are planning a party, Sushi Sono has beautiful private rooms as well. I'm thrilled to share that despite not being a big seafood enthusiast, I actually enjoyed the sushi at this restaurant. The flavors were impressive, and I must say, the seaweed salad was absolutely amazing - a true delight that added to the overall experience. The Gyoza was also amazing would highly recommend. In addition to the wonderful dining experience, I appreciated the private room that was available. The unique touch of having to take off our shoes before entering the room added to the authentic atmosphere and made the meal feel even more special. Sushi Sono is a hidden gem located near Columbia mall right behind Whole Foods. To be honest, I did not have high expectations so it seriously blew my mind how good it was. I dined with a friend and the restaurant was pretty much empty, so the service was pretty quick. We got 2 Dobin Mushi which came in a small teapot. It tasted good but it wasn't anything special. We also ordered salmon sashimi appetizer and oh my. It was so fresh that we ordered another one right after the first bite. For the main sushi, we ordered a la carte and chose salmon, Fatty tuna (toro), Uni, Eel, and sweet shrimp. They were all so fresh and the fish was super thick. We still left feeling hungry even after spending over $150 so minus one star for that. read more

This restaurant is a must. Nestled back and sort of secluded lakeside by Lake Kittamaqundi lies this little sushi gem. The food was amazing; their fatty tuna is one of the better ones in the area. Their beef skewers are grilled just right; juicy and coupled with a great sauce. The shrimp shumai is fresh and offers a different taste than the others in the area that I've had. And their sushi is also fantastic. Try their house warm sake! Service is great, and the restaurant is warm and welcoming, very Japanese-inspired. read more
