This is definitely a very interesting place, it's entirely staffed by one man! You truly feel you are in his kitchen enjoying what he makes for you personally. I wonder what will happen if/when this place gets mobbed. The owner/chef is a little tiny Korean man who takes great pride in giving you the best sushi he can possibly make. The rolls are huge, I ordered my standard California, Philadelphia and Rainbow and I couldn't finish! That's NEVER happened. He also gave me and the couple seated beside me some tuna sashimi, just... because. At the end there is a green tea mochi icecream thing. A nice surprise but I didn't care for it too much, like a rubbery hockey puck, but still... a nice gesture. He packed up my leftovers to take home complete with a little soy packet, ginger and wasabi and the fake grass thing, just like the plates at the supermarket. This is my new favorite sushi place and I'll be back, many many times! read more

After visiting several other sushi places; I have to say this is the best in the area. It's freshly prepared and amazing. The owner is awesome and we love the green tea mochi! :) read more

Sushi Red - American Roll - Sushi Bars Near Me - Plainville, Connecticut

I can't believe how everyone is bitching about how expensive it is to eat here. Try ordering sushi in Chicago and you'll see that a signature roll is at least $14 per roll. This place is great! It's clean and the food is delicious. It's also owned by a Korean guy who can't speak English very well so forgive him if he points to the drink bar instead explaining all the options to you...(referring to another review) I would definitely come back to eat here! read more

Some of the best sushi I ever had. The chef who I belive was the owner was very kind. It does not look like you typical japaneese restaurant and the windows have blinds which are all closed but dont let that put you off as i said the sushi is amazing and so is the chef read more

The best. Not at all fancy or pretentious. Just an friendly old man behind his counter, cutting incredibly fresh fish and serving it to you. The menu is varied, though lacking a lot of novelty rolls that other, more "upscale" places offer. Frankly they are not needed. You will eat a very good meal here. And if that's not enough, at the end of your meal, you will be given a little plastic packet of green tea mochi ice cream, very yummy!!! This place has one several awards, and it still doesn't disappoint. Awesome! read more

The girl working was very nice. Was served tea while waiting for takeout. However, I got three roles. Better than a Chinese buffet but still far off from "Good sushi". I become a bit of a beer snob because I travel for work and eat at a log of different places looking for good sushi. The best way to test is to eat it without any soy sauce (it's an insult to the chef to drown it in soy sauce). Unfortunately, all three roles, I had to drown it in soy sauce and mix in some extra wasabi. Probably won't eat here again if I'm in the area. ***Again, I'm a bit of a sushi snob** if you're not picky, then hit it up. It's not terrible. *3 stars read more

Southington's best kept secret!!! This chef is amazing! He is the waiter, chef and cashier. He takes such care and pride in everything that he makes. The fish is always fresh and delicious!!! We love going here just because of the chef, he loves what he does!!! read more

Truly a hidden gem in Plainville. We wanted sushi but didn't know where to go. And so, Yelp to the rescue and we found Sushi Red. What a pleasant surprise. The location is tucked inside a little hole-in-the-wall plaza. There is a sushi bar and a handful of tables to dine in. It didn't smell funny or feel funny. There was one gentlemen working and that is all. He takes the orders, prepares the sushi and checks you out. We called at 6:20 on a Saturday night for take out and it was ready in about a half hour. There was one other group in the joint when I arrived and another arrived for take out after me. This place should be way busier! The sushi itself was fantastic. Everything tasted extremely fresh and the texture it was supposed to be. The wasabi had just the right kick for me and there were generous amounts of avocado on the Dragon and Avocado rolls. I am already looking forward to a date night here in the future. read more

We found this place on yelp and we were glad we did! It is located in a strip mall. The interior isn't very fancy and they don't serve alcohol, but who cares when the sushi is this good! The fish was very fresh. The rice was a bit harder than I prefer. The wasabi was potent. We got a platter that included two rolls. I think one was called Pink Lady and the other had eel on the outside. It also had tuna, salmon, and another kind of fish sushi pieces. It was a lot of sushi for three people. The price was fantastic. It would have been in the hundreds if ordered in Los Angeles. The owner was the waiter and chef. He was very attentive. He gave us green tea mochi for dessert. A great sushi restaurant! read more

This is a restaurant that I visit multiple times every month. The interior is simple yet elegant with a large L shaped sushi bAr which I always sit at. You are always greeted and asked to have a seat. You are always brought a pot of hot tea when you sit. The owner/chef is absolutely wonderful and humble. The products, execution and service are all second to none. It can be a bit slow but really there is only one man, taking your order, preparing your food and cashing you out. He is efficient with wonderful knife skills and has beautiful simple presentation. It feels like he is hosting us at his home when we go there from placing the plates in front of you to pouring soy for you. And bowing and thanking you for coming when you leave. Everything here is good, from the appetizers to the mochi ice cream at the end of the meal. The option to have brown rice is also a very nice option to have. All of these things combine for a great culinary experience that should be savored and enjoyed. Favorite sushi restaurant I've ever been to. You should all( just not on nights I'm there) come in, take a seat, be patient and enjoy the wonderful sushi and service at sushi red! read more

Sushi Red has the freshest Sushi around. My daughter lives in NYC and says it is the best sushi she has ever had. They are pleasant and very professional. When it comes to sushi, it's gotta be fresh! And Sushi Red fits the bill! read more

Sushi was decent. Service was horrible. My logic is this: +3.5 stars for food -1 won't let you choose where to sit and has no A/C (+ very hot/humid indoors in the summer - think about the fish!) -1 refuses to serve water. We even asked and he just pointed at the fridge with bottled drinks and shook his head. +1 for the free mochi ice cream at the end! This leads me to 2.5. read more

This is now our sushi go to restaurant. We have been several times now and tried many of the rolls and also the nigiri combination. Everything is super fresh and always delicious. We really love the spicy tuna roll, it is very different from other restaurants but we like the extra spicy kick and the chunks of fish in the mixture. Usually he gives us a couple pieces of white tuna nigiri as a bonus and that is the best. Personally, I think the classic rolls are great without spending so much money on the special rolls. The tea, mochi dessert and service is always good. Be sure to get there early so you get a table or seat. It's a pretty small place and a one-man sushi gig. read more

Best spicy sauce I've tasted. His sushi are fresh and extremely well priced. He runs it like the traditional sushi cart. This is how sushi should be done. Now if I were rating the place, it felt like a dingy gas station convenience store, but the food was excellent. read more

No beer. No wine. No sake. Save your money for the food. Miso was very good, and I think it had fermented marigold petals in it. The seaweed salad could have been a little better drained, but tasted yummy. The edamame was butterey, but a little overly salted. We both had our own (nice) spicy tuna roll, and I had eel special (roll and nigiri x 5 pieces) too, while she had Philadelphia roll. Nice and tasty, and nicely priced. The service is personal and personable. A nice, local neighborhood drop-in for sushi, with no muss or fuss. read more

Amazing little sushi place! Super good, quality food and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend!

When you go for sushi, if you are really a sushi lover, you go for the quality of the fish, not the bells & whistles. At Sushi Red you will get superb fish and courteous service from the owner in a very low key atmosphere. Tea on arrival and a well priced menu to start. The place is immaculate. Our sushi was delicious (4 rolls) and we were given complimentary pieces of tender white tuna. After dinner these frozen green tea ice cream "dumplings!" complimentary too! I wish we lived closer; the owner was so nice and we would definitely return! read more

I read all the reviews and then was highly skeptical when I showed up. I trusted the reviews and went inside. Thank you Yelpers because I wouldn't have tried it if it wasn't for you. I recommend takeout since it isn't a sit down type of place. The takeout is amazing. I eat a lot of sushi and it is definitely some of the best in the area. The chef gave me hot tea as I waited and he even through in a couple extra pieces of tuna. I was amazed! I would definitely recommend this place. Tip: when you get there, just trust the reviews and go in. It is mostly takeout so it may be empty inside. I realized as I waited for my sushi that most people call ahead and then pick up. In the 5-10 minutes I waited, 4 people picked up orders. That was a Tuesday afternoon!!! read more

Outstanding surprise I have driven bye this restaurant for several years. Looking for another Sushi restaurant I saw Sushi Reds reviews Outstanding reviews and deserved them. Such a great experience! As soon as we entered (around 2:30 pm) we were seated to the left of the sushi station by the chef/owner as we were the only patrons at that time. We were given tea and menus right away and had no trouble choosing our picks (nigiri for him, lady in red for me). Our plates came quickly and looked amazing. We even got a bonus piece each -white tuna nigiri. Needless to say, we ate our rolls quickly and they were delicious. Beautiful pieces of fish and yummy rice. At the end we were given green tea mochi which is a favorite of ours - and it was free. :) it was a pleasant experience and we will most definitely be returning to Sushi Red! read more

Sushi Red - Lady in red roll with bonus piece! - Sushi Bars Near Me - Plainville, Connecticut

Pretty good sushi, with a great atmosphere. My wife and I stumbled into this place a while back and loved it! All the rolls are made well, the tea is great and we usually get a complimentary item as a "thanks for coming". The sushi chef is very polite and does a great job making this place relaxing and enjoyable! The only issue worth mentioning is the fact that there is only one chef so there might be a wait. So be mindful if you are in a hurry. read more

Hands down best sushi around. Everything made fresh right in front of you. Owner/chef and his wife are very friendly and hardworking. Complimentary hot green tea and green tea mochi are added bonus. Been here numerous times and have never been disappointed. Highly recommend any of the "spicy" rolls. Only downfall is occasionally the wait if it's busy, but it is well worth it! read more

Great place for sushi. We love it! We make sure to go out of our way to stop here anytime we are in the area. The sushi chef is always super friendly and offers us tea while we wait if we get a to go order. The prices are extremely affordable and although we definitely have our favorites (try the shrimp tempura- you won't regret it) but we've never had any roll we didn't enjoy. read more

Please don't judge this book by its cover. It is a small place in a little strip or stores. There is only one man making the sushi so sometimes it can be a little bit of a wait, but there is hot tea provided while you wait and sometimes the mans, wife is there to help. This place has the best sushi around HANDS DOWN. I've tried many other places in the area and while some are close, Sushi Red wins out every time. You can dine in or take out. If you dine in, there is a free green tea mochi ice cream treat at the end. read more

Wow. What a great find. Totally relied on Yelp, to find a good sushi place on route to Bradley airport in Hartford - and Yelp came through! Ate lunch on a Thursday afternoon. It was very quiet which meant that the chef paid a lot of attention to me :) Only downside is that he didn't have a lot of variety in fish, but made up for it in taste. Hand rolls were phenomenal, as was the dessert. read more

Sushi had never been high on my go to list. But today, my daughter wanted it, so out came yelp to steer us to a good spot. As the previous review states it doesn't look like much from the outside. And if your looking for an amazingly over the top interior this isn't the place. It is however nicely decorated, small and quiet. I loved it as a place to eat. So contrary to the previous post, I would find it a perfectly romantic place to bring a date. In fact, while there a woman came in setting up a engagement surprise for her friend later in the evening. Now for the really important part, the sushi was outstanding! We had a bunch, and had to try more, as every one was great. The chef was indeed a master, and not to mention a great host. It was an awesome meal, so much so that we went back for lunch later in the week to try some of the things we were to stuffed to try on day one. It was as great as the first time. I will be a frequent patron of this place. With such attention to service, I doubt there will be any sub par meals coming from that knife. read more

Best sushi in CT hands down. Rivals much of NYC sushi in freshness and authenticity. They have some unique creations like "spring roll spicy tuna" which is actually genius in how the change to rice paper allows the flavors to shine without being overshadowed by seaweed. read more

Walked in knowing they were byob based on reviews but was taken aback that they did not cater to it. By this I mean they had no ice or wine glasses. I drank my wine out of tea cups that slowly got warmer. The sushi is good but they do not have an awful lot of selection on specialty rolls. The selection we ordered was really good and I am pleased, but note the menu is limited and executed to perfection. I was happy they had the naruto roll since that is my new favorite roll right now. The rolls are of a good size and the two of us shared a variety of four rolls. The prices are more than reasonable. I would be happy to return to this restaurant. read more

Was told by friends of mine about this place and spoke very highly of them. After driving 2 hours, we can see what the hype was about. Small shop but exceptional service and best part was the food. Never tried "raw" sushi until today and it may have changed my perspective. Writing this review as I am eating because they deserve it. read more

Sushi Red - Sushi Bars Near Me - Plainville, Connecticut

My wife and I travel to the area often to visit friends, one of the places that is frequently on our dinner list is a visit to Sushi Red. The owner is from Japan and is clearly a very experienced chef leaving you with quality, fresh, delicious food. The menu selection covers both your typical options as well as some more uncommon ones (Inari for example). The place is definitely a hole-in-the-wall that can be easily missed and it's "atmosphere" is certainly casual. What it lacks in atmosphere though it makes up in every other way, including reasonable prices and friendly staff. read more

This little place is a hidden gem. Best sushi around, hands down. Not the biggest variety compared to some places but the quality is what counts.
