I ordered the Full of Krab Roll and the Mexican Roll--both featured shrimp tempura and tasted very similar. While the flavor was decent, I wasn't particularly impressed. The rolls were on the smaller side, with a lot of rice and not much filling. At $15-$20 per specialty roll, they didn't feel like a great value. I might give it another shot, but for now, Sushi Maru isn't at the top of our list. read more

I had such high hopes, and the lunch was such a disappointment. I made it just in time for a sushi/sashimi lunch combo on a Saturday. The place was busy even at that time, which I thought was a good sign. My server was nice and efficient, and in no time I had my salad, platter and diet soda in front of me. The platter was described as 9 pieces of sashimi and 3 pieces nigiri for $21.99. Well, the nigiri was the normal size that you would expect from any sushi place, but the sashimi pieces were so tiny and thin, that I guarantee if you stuck all of them together, they wouldn't equal one piece of the nigiri that was served. I can't believe the restaurant wouldn't be embarrassed to serve pieces so tiny. I took a picture, but I should have used a penny for scale, because I guarantee you can't imagine just how tiny these pieces of sashimi were. For meal, soda and tip it came to $30, and I left hungry. If there is no food left anywhere on Earth except here, and I'm forced to come here again, I'll try the sushi rolls, because the ones I saw looked good. read more

The BUDDHA roll was so good I've ordered it multiple times and would order it again and again. I recently tried their tuna nachos, I've been wanting to try them for a while. They weren't bad, pretty good but different than what I expected. First time here started with the goyza. Very nice dumpling with the perfect sear on them. Light with a flavorful filling. Got the Diablo roll. When I first arrived, I was in shock at the number of people in the restaurant on a random Tuesday evening. There was a wait for about 15 to 20 minutes at 8 o'clock at night. I now know why. As an avid sushi lover I really had high expectations based on reviews, but my experience fell flat. I really didn't enjoy the sushi rice, it wasn't the best quality, rather off putting actually. The presentation of our to-go food was excellent. They provided plenty of napkins, utensils and tempura flakes in separate containers for the clear soup. The tuna roll and the salmon roll automatically came with avocado, which was a little surprising but not terrible, assuming one likes avocado. The spicy tuna roll really wasn't that good. Stopped in for a quick bite after a movie. My server was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered the Pile Up Roll which had shrimp tempura, avocado and cream cheese inside. On top crab salad, tempura flakes, spicy mayo, eel sauce and scallions. It was really tasty. I was surprised the Green Mussels were served cold. I've never had them cold, always had them baked. This is my second time coming here because I enjoyed it so much the first, my friend also had this place come to mind when I asked her for good sushi in Brandon. We started off with miso soups, it was good but didn't have much tofu or seaweed (which I love), but had a good flavor. Next the crab Rangoon, it was tasty! They looked a bit greasy, and the corners are hard to eat because they are hard and sharp. But I enjoyed the filling and the sauce. The server is kind, however I did not like that I felt rushed. It had been years since I returned to Sushi Maru (mainly because I very rarely travel the Brandon area). Stopped by between appointments for a solo lunch and fell in love all over again. I ordered the Sunset roll (fresh salmon, yellow tail, cucumber, avocado wrapped with seared salmon and topped with spicy mayo) and white tuna with avocado maki. I held the eel sauce for my gluten sensitivity. First bite reminded me why this place was like my second home years ago. Absolute perfection. The restaurant hasn't changed much except for covid-19 precautions. The barstools were removed and masks were required inside. I felt safely distanced at my table. Staff is still incredibly pleasant. First off shout out to Ahmed. He was a cool waiter. On point with everything me and my wife needed for lunch! We started off with the Gyoza which was ok. I'd say about a 6/10. Woulda been better if it was a little more well done. The short ribs I ordered were about a 5/10 the flavor was just way to overpowering and very very chewy and hard to eat on a few of them. Not a very good meat to fat and tendon ratio. The clear soup about a 7/10. The vegetables 5/10. Very bland just steamed veggies not necessarily bad but definitely nothing to write home about. And the rice was about a 6/10. Didn't taste authentic. As for the decor and staff they are spot on! All very friendly and quick with service. The tables and chairs are cool and unique. Absolutely love! Came here last Saturday afternoon around 430 before going to Busch Gardens to try it out for a small snack. We had a lovely middle-aged female server who was an absolute delight. This restaurant took me from a casual sushi liker to a sushi lover. I used to get California rolls and only those. I ended up trying salmon sashimi and the "ST Patrick". I feel hard core after eating actual factual raw fish lol. I was flabbergasted by how flavorful raw fish can be and how I could authentically taste the salmon. Came here for dine in on a Sunday around 6pm and was seated immediately. Our waitress Kotomi was very kind and we overall enjoyed our sushi experience here. For starters, my husband and I shared edamame and creamy green mussels, the mussles came in 4 and were huge! They were warm and juicy but it had a hint of wasabi flavor which I am not a big fan of. Wasabi lovers would definitely enjoy this. I also ordered kimchi, it was my first time trying it and I learned I am not too fond of kimchi either. We ordered 3 sushi rolls including the USF roll, Dragon Fire, and Miami Hurricane. They are all very delicious and the fish tasted fresh. The scenery inside was nice and dim, and some of the seats inside were cushioned and super comfortable. It wasn't too busy indoors and they also seemed to be pretty busy with take out orders. We had the following: Desire Roll, Train Wreck Roll, Sake Bomb Roll, Bahama Mama Roll, and a Bagel Roll. Our favorites were the Desire and Sake Bomb. However, to wrap it up, I ordered the Toro (Fatty Tuna), for $20, three generous portions of delicate and delicious tuna, well worth the price!
