I've been to Sushi Man many times, and this was by far my worst experience here. Honestly, it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had overall. I want to be fair and say that the server's facial expression itself was not the issue. Everyone can have a bad day. What really bothered me was his attitude, poor communication, and the lack of transparency around the restaurant's rules and charges. There were two major issues. 1. The 90-minute rule was not clearly communicated or reasonably enforced. The sign says "90 min limit per table." I don't think that wording clearly explains exactly how the 90-minute rule works or when leftover food becomes subject to an additional charge. We had been eating and talking for 1 hour and 46 minutes when the server suddenly came over, pointed at the sushi we had not finished, and started counting it to charge us extra. We were still actively eating. We explained that we were still working on the food. He told us that the 90-minute dining time had already passed and that they had already given us extra time ("You have been eating for 1hr 46 mins"). I told him that if the restaurant has a strict 90-minute rule, we should have been told when the 90 minutes were reached. Instead, nobody said anything at the 90-minute mark. We were allowed to continue eating for another 16 minutes, and then, while we were still eating, the server suddenly started counting the remaining sushi and telling us we would be charged for it. The issue is not that I object to a 90-minute limit. If that is the restaurant's policy, that is fine. The issue is that the rule was not clearly communicated or properly enforced. Customers should not have to find out about an additional charge after the fact while they are still eating. 2. The 15% mandatory gratuity was not clearly disclosed, and it made the poor service even more frustrating. Because there were 4/5 people in our party, a 15% mandatory gratuity was added to our bill. We were not told about this when ordering, and it was not posted on our table or on the menu. I asked the server where the mandatory gratuity was stated. He simply pointed toward a sign on the wall behind the reception area without explaining anything. When I said that a mandatory charge should be clearly stated on the menu or somewhere customers can easily see it while ordering, he responded that it was posted there and that everyone could see it when they walked in. I want to be clear that my issue is not simply that the restaurant has a mandatory gratuity policy. My issue is how that policy affected this particular experience. Normally, if a server provides poor service, customers still have the choice to reflect that experience in the tip they leave. Here, that choice was taken away from us. The 15% gratuity was guaranteed regardless of the quality of service, and in this interaction, it made the dismissive attitude and poor communication especially frustrating. It felt as though the mandatory gratuity gave the server no reason to care whether we were satisfied with the service, because the 15% would be charged regardless. A mandatory gratuity does not mean customers should lose the ability to ask reasonable questions about charges or receive a respectful explanation. Overall, this was not about expecting the server to smile or provide perfect service. It was about basic communication, transparency, and being treated respectfully when we had legitimate questions about charges and restaurant policies. You can't reorder because nothing's arrived, and the clock keeps running. An hour and a half later we'd eaten less sushi than a regular night out -- at over $40 per person. The trick is rice. Huge, dense mounds, tiny strips of fish that tasted tired to me, a couple pieces frankly stale / off. You get full on starch while you wait for fish that never really comes. Then the bill lands with a $5 waste fee. No verbal heads-up, signage tiny in a corner. So they stall your 90 minutes, fill you with rice, then fine you for not finishing the rice. Left no tip, disputed the $5. If you want sushi near campus, do yourself a favour -- a normal Japanese restaurant gives you more fish for less money, with no clock and no fine. read more

I've been here many times since my first, and this place doesn't disappoint. I'm not a big connoisseur of sushi and don't prefer more 'fishy' flavors, but from what I've had at Sushi Man, I love their food and their rolls, and their fish (or at least their salmon, which I've had a lot of) is high quality. Service is pretty slow on weekends, but on weekdays it's a lot quicker, so on those packed days I'd recommend putting all of what you want into one order, since it will take a while to come out. The ambience is usually really nice and calm, but on weekends it does get pretty loud. I love this place so much. If you ever go, then you need to try one of their shrimp tempura rolls (my #1 on their menu). Their entrees are also pretty good. I love, love, LOVE their sweet tea, but everyone else I've went with has hated it, so take that with a grain of salt. Go ASAP! This place is awesome. read more

Especially finding good all you can eat sushi if the sushi is fresh. It's located in a strip mall and is an interesting decor. We were seated pretty quickly, but after scanning the restaurant, we realized how packed the place was. The waiter came by once and took our initial orders and then pointed us to the ordering device on the table. We could order as much as we like, but had to finish everything. Whatever wasn't finished was added to the bill and you could take with you (despite signs saying you couldn't). The food was good, but the service was meh. I don't recommend the tempura combo to take up space. They have accommodated for large groups (greater than 10). Restaurant is clean. Food comes out a lot slower than the other AYCE sushi places, so if you are wanting to order more, try to order a little bit before you finish the current place. AYCE sushi places usually have some combination of restrictions... whether it's rounds of ordering, or $ penalties for leftovers, or dish limits, or time limits. Sushi Man has the leftover penalty and the time limit (90 minutes). Sometimes that can be a little stressful if you don't plan ahead! I don't think they enforced the time limit for us that day, but it wasn't all that crowded. It has the traditional sushi, makis, and some crazy rolls. I know it's not efficient, but I like to get the sides as well. Depending on the scope of the kitchen dish, a little robot comes out and delivers the food to the table. The look of the Sushi Man is bright and woodsy and modern-ish. The pricing isn't cheap, but it's in line with AYCE sushi spots. The service is quick and friendly and pretty responsive. I wanted to give this a higher rating, but the flavors of both the sushi and the kitchen foods are all kind of... muted. The phoenix roll is the best roll we tried. It had a nice mix of hot and cold in each bite. The other rolls we tried were good--I felt they could have used more differentiating flavors, but that was likely because we purposely ordered non-spicy options since we had our kids with us. I would have loved to try ALL the rolls--but there were so many options it would've been impossible with just 5 people sharing. We all got the all-you-can-eat option, which it seems is necessary if you're going to be sharing. This makes a lot of sense, though, because the all-you-can-eat is open to anything on the menu! Sushi rolls, hot dishes, bowl of noodles, dessert--it's all included. Drinks are the only thing that costs extra (just get a water and save your calories for the rest of the menu!). Wait for first round of ayce wasn't bad for a 6p Friday night seating and the place is spacious enough that it's very friendly for persons needing disability accommodations. However, it got busier soon after and our second order took a while (~25-30mins). To be fair, it was graduation weekend and Mother's Day weekend so maybe this isn't the norm. The waiter also apologize for the delay and said best time to come was lunch on weekdays for the fastest service. Sushi rolls are good. Nigiri is freshly made and the rice is still warm which reminded me (ever so slightly) of Sugarfish in SoCal. While the raw fish is definitely fresh, it's not the freshest so don't come expecting the highest of caliber. Meal was enjoyable and it's very good for the price. I've been trying to find good sushi in Champaign, so have been making the rounds. Today I went to sushi man for lunch and discovered that this was not the spot for me. We were one of the four tables that was in use during lunch time, and our sushi took over 40 minutes to prepare (we ordered 4 rolls, 2 classic and 2 specialty). When the sushi eventually did come, it looked beautiful... but didn't seem to be very good quality. Some of the avocado did not taste fresh, and the classic rolls (spicy salmon and spicy crab) were a strange consistency. None of the rolls were very enjoyable, unfortunately.
