It has to be open, with its staff dancing around for a video. This place has good ambiance, however, the reviews were more than accurate. There is a chef that sings, pretty well I might say, and there's one chef that kinda can cook. Only 2 cooks, for a place of about 6 grills. His veggies were burnt, shrimp, rubber. But steak (ordered Med-rare) was Medium, got about half a portion of a full cut of steak. Compared to its sister location Nakashima of Appleton, the salad portion was smaller. Still good. However, the tuna Guacamole, was acceptable, after requesting a remake, the first serving being brown old looking avocado (it looked near-black in the dim lighting, I held my iPhone light to it to find brown, aged bad avacado). The steak sashimi I will assume was cooked on a coal grill. It filled the pallet with an ash taste with its burned edges (and came out later into the meal cooking portion of the experience). Spicy tuna roll was alright. Thank you for the waitress getting us new guacamole. Overall 2/5, the cold beer and somewhat over cooked steak is for the 2. But am open to trying other options. It may be owned by the same people as Nakashima, but it sure isn't the same menus or great standard.

The meal started on shaky ground with the tuna tataki. Dry and somewhat fishy, I had no desire to have more than one piece. The ponzu sauce also did not have the flavorful, citrusy tartness that could have saved this dish. Thankfully, things did get better. The Spanish grasshopper roll was flavorful, much more fresh tasting, and had a nice level of heat. The dragon roll and the crazy roll were also decent but not amazing. Thankfully, the tataki set the bar pretty low for everything else. Service was also decent in that our server was friendly but somewhat forgetful and main courses didn't quite arrive together leaving some to stare at their food while others waited for theirs. This was not a major issue, though, and only helps to explain why this was just an average experience. One final note was how unusually dark the restaurant was with very dark paint-chipped walls. Additionally, the walk to the restrooms took me past a small graveyard of broken and unused chairs. The spiral bound menus were all in various levels of disrepair. The only reason I mention these things is because there's a certain level of attention to small details that can make or break my level of comfort in eating sushi at any particular restaurant. Pricing was shockingly inexpensive for the amount of food. Unsurprisingly, a service charge was added since our group was large - but I was shocked that it was only 15% - which I have never seen. We all made sure to add to the gratuity reflective of our appreciation for the hard work of our server. Overall, not fantastic - but definitely not the worst sushi place I have been. There are even a couple new rolls in the menu. The only downside to the sushi is that three of us ordered and it all came in one platter. This is fine at a table, but inconvenient at the grill. The chicken hibachi was done well. The chef did the normal show. One thing I liked was that he added a bit of garlic to the fried rice. Nice touch. Portions were large and even had some to take home. That took another 15 minutes. Frustrating as we saw other tables get helped promptly by many of the other servers. While this is a normally good, quick lunch spot, we didn't leave until maybe an hour and a half later. The food was okay but not worth the poor service. I did hear that the chicken hibachi was good but would've been better with yum yum and ginger sauce like what's available at other restaurants. Maybe just a one off but we won't return soon.

If it's in season I'd highly recommend the super white tuna, in addition the yellow tail, and salmon were our group favorites. The octopus was not chewy but tender and fresh. Miso soup was not overly salty, nor tasted like water. The shumai tasted pre-cooked with an onion flavor but who goes to a Japanese restaurant for shumai? All of the sushi rolls were balanced and much higher grade than anything you'd get at a refrigerator in a market place. What sets the food apart is they serve sushi freshly made so it's the correct temperature though you do have to wait a while for the sushi chef to make your selections if it's a busy day. Just don't come here if you are in a rush as it's not a fast food restaurant. The sukiyaki was not greasy and tasted sweet/savory just like how my grandmother makes it only they used a lean stir fry beef cuts while my grandma would choose a fattier thinly sliced beef. Not many Japanese restaurants serve sukiyaki like this in a ceramic pot so it's probably worth trying this dish alone as it was a staple in my Japanese household. The tempura was crispy and not oily, I believe they use Panko bread crumbs to make it light and crunchy. If you come in a big party you can reserve the private room surrounded in oak paneling and a sliding privacy door. You'll have to take your shoes off and sit flush with the floor on seat cushions for a Japanese experience. If you order Japanese soda, you'll be using a small plunger to push a glass marble into your bottle to open the ramune. Only thing I missed trying out was the Japanese beer and saki, but I give high ratings to this place for the Japanese food and service.

Ended up trying both Japanese beers that were offered and they were both excellent and paired well with my meal. Sushi and Hibachi dinners were fresh and filling. Loved the different sauces that were added to the dishes, and others were brought as well for appetizers that were ordered. Splurged on food here, I must say. We were really hungry, and I was eager to try a variety of what Sake House had to offer, so we ordered more than we normally would for a standard outing. It was cool that they even have Boba on their menu! And the taste was fantastic! We ate all our food and had no trouble with conversations, given the quiet environment. Staff was friendly and attentive, and I will return when I'm back in the area, for sure.
