Beware - poor, slow service, disappointing food and cash only! My daughter had a spur of the moment craving for sushi on our recent visit to Amsterdam and we happened to pass by Sushi Taksteeg. There were no patrons inside the restaurant but we decided to give it a try.
The waitress was very slow to provide us with menus, but we were in no rush so we waited. The menu was not extensive so we ordered some common sashimi and rolls. During this time two other couples arrived and I noticed that after waiting around 15 minutes with no service one couple got up and left. Nearly 30 minutes after ordering our food started to arrive. The rolls were poorly wrapped and some were falling apart.
Our order also included ikura and as I ate it I noticed that the roe had started to turn. While we were eating I also noticed a very small sign indicating that credit / debit cards were not accepted but luckily I had some cash. When we finished, our bill was presented with two complimentary throat lozenges that tasted horrid. I paid the bill but was quickly told that one of my 20 Euro bills had a small tear (less than 2cm) in the corner and that they would not accept that note, and to give them a new one. I told them those were the only notes I had and the manager came over and rudely demanded that I go to an ATM and get another one. I asked why and she told me the bank wouldn't accept it. When I explained that the bank gave me that very note she told me she didn't care. Luckily, I was able to find enough coins to make up the difference so we paid and left.
Given the quality of food and service, no wonder it is cash only! Interestingly, the next shop we visited took the slightly damaged note without comment. Needless to say, we will never patronize this restaurant again if it continues to remain in business. read more
