    Gold sushi meal

My date and I got to Sushi Gen a bit early but we were welcomed with open arms nevertheless. The waiter brought us water and when they fully opened at 3pm he came back to our table and took our orders. I tried the "Gold sushi" and the "Gold dragon". Both of the sushi trays were filled with sushi delicacy! So good! The salmon was tender and so were the other fish. My date also loved his sushi meals. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but when you enter you are greeted by a traditional Japanese atmosphere and a touch of modern decor. It's a very elegant place. Great for romantic outings, I think!

I love everywhere from here! Came to Winnipeg for a couple days and randomly found this sushi spot! And Bang!! Everything that we ordered surprised us in a good way! They have all you can eat and regular orders. Sashimi is sooo fresh! And we are lucky enough to get to try the limited chef's special! Crab meats, shrimp, avocado covering with cheese! So yummy! Definitely recommend for others!

Typical all-you-can-eat Winnipeg sushi restaurant. Mostly low grade, limited selection sushi for just below average price. Plain decor and decent-to-average service. Go on the weekend during lunch time for faster service and better food. I went out for the "all you can eat" lunch with my family on the weekend. The price is $1 lower on Sat and Sun, so it came to $13.99 per adult, and there was a $2 charge for all kids under three (silly, I know). First thing that annoyed me was the lack of sashimi in the lunch line up, despite a large sign on the window stating that "all you can eat includes sashimi". Our server did offer us an option to upgrade to dinner version which indeed includes sashimi, but costs $21.99 per person ($22.99 on weekdays). The maki rolls were just as expected - very heavy on densly packed rice. Roll selection was quite limited, mostly involving spicy, non-spicy and crunchy variations of the same few rolls. Since the menu does not contain any description of the food you're getting, here a quick legend: crunchy = with tempura flakes; spicy = drenched in mixture of mayo and hot sauce. I think hand rolls would make a better choice if you are not sure which rolls to order, since they have more balanced ingredient ratio, i.e. less rice. The ingredients were limited and of lower grade: farm salmon, cheapest nori and rice-green tea, pretty much what you'd get at majority of Winnipeg sushi places, but definitely fresh. Fortunately, besides rolls and lack of sashimi there was quite a large selection of appetizers and cooked items. Unfortunately, most were quite simple and rather unimpressive. Deep fried tofu and a tofu salad were the blandest thing ever. Even miso soup tasted unusual. Chicken Katsu and Teriyaki beef were OK, but that's about it. The only thing that pleasantly stood out was their tempura, particularly shrimp. To summarize: quantity, not quality. Just average, though you *could* do much worse. Good for people with large appetites and limited budget, though still not that cheap. I am highly unlikely to be back, unless I am in a group of starving friends.

I order, say that's it, he says it'll be 15-20 mins. We head out a little later then should, but get there and our order's ready and waiting. Decor was, oddly, one of the more appreciated sushi place decorum I'm seen. It wasn't much to look at, bags of rice and sushi supplies piled high in the front, with 4-5 cafe chairs aimed outside to the streets of Corydon. Fridge cabinet full of sushi ginger and the like. But something about it seemed nice. I may not want to eat in there, but it was like I was at some depot of sushi, like a landing dock where sushi came in. Up a small set of stairs, K-Pop playing on the radio, three chefs with 'Korea' headbands wrapped around their heads up front making the food. I have to say, it seemed like one of the more dedicated sushi joints I've seen. Small and quaint, and you can't beat three good sets of sushi (Bakudan, California, and Dynamite rolls) for 2.99. I'll definitely be revisiting this place when I don't want to pay much for good food.

When we got there, the restaurant was packed to do its limited seating. We went back to the car and tried to figure out where else to go, but luckily, a group had just came out of the restaurant, so we ended up eating at Sushi Ai after all. Once inside, we were seated at a table that still had dirty dishes on it from the previous people that ate at our table. After about several minutes, someone came to clear the plates off the table and wiped it down. We were provided with a menu, as well as a menu with lunch combo specials. We decided to order the croquette ($2.75), "tacoyaki" ($5.25), shrimp tempura ($9.50), bakudan tuna roll ($4.75), chopped surf clam roll ($6.25), spider roll ($8.75), and tiger roll ($12.50). The first to arrive was the croquette and "tacoyaki" (which I assume was a spelling error, but it appears that the restaurant and take-out menu are both spelled this way). Before I continue with my review on the food, I would like to add that the service was subpar and the server was not attentive at all. When the server had given us the croquette and takoyaki, she just left afterwards. We were not given any napkins or chopsticks and it was really hard to get her attention, so that we could our chopsticks to enjoy our food. Also, not once did she come by our table to see how our food was or if our water needed to be refilled, even though our cups were empty. Now back to the food. The croquette was a single large piece that was cut in half and served with teriyaki sauce. Inside, the croquette was filled with mashed potato and corn. I don't usually order croquette because of how simple it is to make, but my friend had wanted to order it. I ended up trying it and thought it was good and well seasoned. The takoyaki came in 6 pieces and was served with a drizzle of mayo and spicy sauce. The takoyaki was smaller than the ones I'm used to having and taste-wise, it was okay, neither good nor bad. I probably wouldn't order it again. Next came all the sushi rolls and the shrimp tempura. The shrimp tempura was okay, it had a nice batter to it, not too thick. However, one thing that bugged me was that they do not devein the shrimp. No one likes to take a bite into a shrimp tempura to see the black intestinal tract still intact in the shrimp, which is kind of off-putting. The tiger roll was okay, the only thing is the sauce used and the amount that was used was a bit overwhelming. The spider roll was also okay, the soft shell crabs had a thicker batter to it than most places of I've seen and had from. I did, however, really loved the chopped surf clam roll. I don't normally order surf clam, so I was expecting much, but it was a delightful surprise. The tuna bakudan was so-so, and a bit dry (due to the lack of sauce). Overall, I'd probably wouldn't be returning here again because of the service and the food. Also, it seems like they were a bit understaffed, as the few tables that next to us had left a long time ago, but the tables were left uncleared and uncleaned.
