After thinking it through a bit more (do I *really* think I could do my own hair? would it stress me out? wouldn't I need to buy more products?), I immediately went on Yelp to search for someone in the DC area I could trust to do it for me and take stress out of the day, which is where I found Susan. From the start, Susan was detailed and thorough. She asked me a bunch of questions about what I was looking for and what my routine currently is, walked me through the process (even helped me with my wedding timeline), and left me feeling very secure knowing she was on the case and would be there on my wedding day. When I had a question, she replied. She made planning a wedding from a different country way less stressful. I don't normally wear much makeup during the day - just some mascara and a little bit of brow gel, so I was concerned that the makeup would make me look like someone else. Having a professional makeup artist apply the wedding makeup for myself, my daughters and my mom was a lovely way for us to bond and enable everyone to feel beautiful on this special day. I found Susan when her name (and overwhelmingly positive responses) kept popping up everywhere I researched--Yelp, wedding planning sites, etc. What I love most about Susan is her thoroughness. We talked on the phone first, she suggested a trial makeup application (which I could not arrange due to time constraints) and she sent a very detailed questionnaire asking about everything from skin tone/issues to dress and accessories to how I envisioned myself on my big day. She requested recent photos of me, both with makeup and without and images of makeup and hair techniques I hoped to emulate. While this questionnaire took some time to complete, it made me feel completely comfortable in her abilities. Personality-wise, Susan is friendly and upbeat in her communications and no-nonsense professional when working at her craft. I especially liked that when I questioned her about her Caucasian makeup skills (she is perhaps best know for her Asian makeup expertise), she assured me of her ability in applying makeup for all ethnicities, but also wanted to make sure I felt 100% comfortable and gave me the option to cancel our arrangement if I did not. For expediency, we opted to have Susan as well as an assistant working simultaneously. I found the prices to be reasonable. Note that mileage and parking costs are additional, as Susan comes to your location. I wanted to feel glamorous on my wedding day and Susan delivered with thick false eyelashes and glam eyeshadow that didn't make me look like a clown. She would apply some makeup, then check with me to ensure I was getting the look I wanted. Most impressive? Susan is quite possibly the best decision I made for my wedding. She is knowledgeable, not just as a make-up artist, but also as a wedding vendor--she's the first vendor to talk to me about making a wedding timeline! Susan is a busy woman, with fully blocked-off weekends, and make-up trials during the week (on top of being a mama to her toddler), but she is extremely responsive, and always willing to make your vision of your wedding happen. Susan did really well on my makeup. It was beautiful and she asked a lot of questions and details about what I wanted. She did two looks on me for the trial and asked me to keep it on for the rest of the day to see how it looks and to keep her posted if anything happened (my skin got too dry/oily, etc). Overall she did great and I was happy with the end result. I took off a star because 1. She never gave me my bridal touch up kit which was stated in the package that I got. I didn't realize I didn't get my touch up kit until after the ceremony. 2. She asked me to use my own lipstick for the wedding. I told her I liked a specific MAC color during the trial and she said I can bring that day of to use for the wedding. At the moment, I just said sure, but in hindsight, I think she should have had that (popular) shade in her collection or tried to match it. As a makeup artist, I would expect you to have all shades under the rainbow. She was pretty pricey and I feel like for her price point, I shouldn't have to use anything of mine. Maybe it's my fault for not speaking up and saying no to her and that I wanted to use a lipstick in her collection? But I think it should be assumed I'll be using all her products unless I insisted or mentioned that I preferred to use something of my own. I was strict on my budget but makeup was one of the things I splurged on... looking back I think I could have found something more affordable. I filled out a very detailed pre-trial questionnaire, sending photos of my face without makeup, my skincare routine, makeup that I typically wear...etc. As someone who very rarely wears makeup, this made me feel confident that Susan was truly trying to understand my features and comfortability with makeup to give me the best care. I was impressed by the informational packages she puts together for her brides, which explain in great detail things like exfoliation techniques and how to rehydrate your skin, which you can do weeks/months before the wedding. Even before I got engaged, I knew that I wanted to book her to do my makeup as well as those of my bridesmaids, and I have zero regrets. Having Susan do my hair and makeup was the best decision I made for my wedding. I am a very indecisive person and also don't understand much about hair/makeup. During the trial, Susan was very patient with me as I tried to figure out what type of look I preferred. Her knowledge and experience helped me to narrow things down to my ideal wedding look. ON my wedding day, I wanted to change my hairstyle from the one we did during our trial. Susan allowed me to do so and created a beautiful half up-do. I would have been annoyed at myself, but Susan didn't even hesitate and was very professional and supportive throughout. My hair and (airbrushed) makeup remained intact throughout the entire day/night and even onto the next day (no, I did not end up washing my face that night--oh well!). Wow! What can I say about Susan's talent except for she's the best in the business! She did the makeup for my sister's wedding and she looked gorgeous!! She was very informative and listened to every need my sister wanted. Like the post above- I'm a twin as well, so I wondered if we were going to look similar on her big day. But Susan did her magic and we had different looks. Needless to say, if anyone can make twins look different and gorgeous at the same time- she's THE BEST!! I was referred by a friend to have Susan do my makeup on my wedding day. I didn't even shop around and I was very comfortable with the decision knowing she would do a great job based on all the positive feedbacks. I was actually very excited to see what Susan could do for me at the trial as I never really liked any professional makeup done on me in the past. Susan was very professional and listened to my likes and dislikes. She was also very friendly and easy to work with. She always gave me the freedom to make my own decisions and never pressured me into getting any additional services that I didn't need. When I first saw myself in the mirror at the trial, I was amazed. I loved it (first time ever I liked my make up) and that was the look I wanted to go for. Also, before my make up trial, I had my hair trial with my hair up as a bun, butI had been debating if I should keep it or go with half up half down style (I was leaning towards the latter). When I got to Susan for the make up trial, Susan mentioned the hair bun wasn't me without having me telling her that was what I was struggling with as well. I still remembered Susan said "you got the dress and make up that is you, but your hair style is not," and that was definitely straight to the point! I was so glad Susan mentioned that and I made up my mind to go with the half up half down style. I'm still very thankful for that because it definitely wouldn't have achieved the look I was aiming for if I were to go with the bun. Of course, my makeup was flawless on the wedding day and it lasted the whole day!! She also got to the hotel earlier than the contracted time so she could have everything set up and ready to go.
