Dr Paya is the best Surgeon, in my opinion, I had been to another doctor that you had to put together your package.

She has volunteered on more than one occasion to comment on other aspects of my health, showing me that she cares about me as a whole. I had read some of these reviews before I saw her, and was prepared for a cold, rather brusque physician. That's OK with me....they're not all warm and cuddly. BUT, Dr. Guiv is lovely and has been nothing but kind, patient, and caring with me, In 15 years, I have never seen anything but kindness and compassion. My whole family goes to her, and I have recommended her to many friends. The entire staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I recommend Dr. Guiv. She's a gem.

I work in health care, and do not generally experience this kind of thing. I was told to see her and schedule a medical procedure involving surgery. I was not provided other options. I scheduled to meet her. She was extremely brief and direct, but kindly. I liked her in the brief time I met her. I scheduled the procedure many months in advance and never spoke with her again. The week prior I did her prep protocol. I am aware that people can feel ill prior but I was so violently ill for 3 days with her prep care medicine that I was up all night sick and unable to function. It impacted my family as I was incredibly ill. Faint, hot/ cold, throwing up, sick in a car. The only times I have ever been that sick are when 1) I was in the ER with my appendicitis and 2) directly after a six hour surgery due to anesthesia. Also once in Paris after having shellfish but that passed in 5-6 hours, this went on for days. I let the office know multiple times and asked if she could please talk with me. I spoke with reception and an assistant, no nurse and no doctor. They reduced the medicine and I started to feel better. I spoke with a family member who is a hospitalist out of state and he was really concerned. I asked about other options and was told there are some, not as solid, but less likely to make me sick and suggested I speak with the doctor. I called the office to discuss but was shut down. Given the effect of the medication, I was also hesitant to go under without talking with her. I canceled the surgery as I really believe in patient care and that the cure should not be worse than the issue. She then sent me a letter I was fired as a patient, certified mail, due to a break down of communication. In other words, there was no communication but me, very sick, asking for a phone call. How could she take the time to arrange that but not call me back when I was incredibly ill from her prep? I believe I am fairly low risk, so having that conversation would have been much appreciated as well. Yet, impressively, she chose to fire me as a patient due to what, why, I wanted to speak with the doctor who prescribed me medication that made me sick? As if I was trying to run back to her after I canceled my surgery? All I wanted was a phone call at the beginning. I do know how busy doctors are and that trivial matters can weigh them down, but I was incredibly sick. The ability to be humble and kind is what makes this world a good place, and had she taken a moment to discuss options I probably would have just moved forward. I still do not have any questions answered. I dislike leaving bad reviews in the health care space, but there is a lot of arrogance and sometimes it is important - she found it necessary to treat me abusively and so there it is. I am not a lab rat and certainly not going to allow someone to perform surgery on me that is so callous they won't take a minute out of their day to speak with me and assuage the issue they created. Patients do need to advocate for their care, we are human and not everything is suited to everyone.

This review is offered as a warning to others that, based on my experience, expect many hassles…read morewith incorrect codings for insurance and inaccurate billing. Background: My primary referred me at 58 years old for my first colonoscopy as standard preventative care. I have no history of cancer, polyps or anything of the sort and am in excellent health so the procedure is 100% covered. Dr Chitayat is in network for my insurance and it was my first visit to his office. The visit was mandatory to draw blood and consult prior to a colonoscopy (in other words, you can't just schedule a colonoscopy. You must visit the doctor first). The office visit was routine, all was fine and the colonoscopy scheduled with the nearby surgery center. ALL of this is 100% covered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield if everything is in network as it was. A week prior to the surgery, the center called to say I would owe $900 when I arrived. I said that was incorrect and explained it was my first colonoscopy and everyone was in network. The surgery center said that Dr Chitayat's office coded it as a colonoscopy based on "previous polyp history" and therefore it was not 100% covered as preventative care. After my explanation that I had never ever had a colonoscopy or previous polyp history, the surgery center had to call Dr Chitayat's office and have them resubmit the proper code for insurance. Dr Chitayat's office corrected it and I was not forced to erroneously pay $900 on day of surgery. To maker matters worse, Dr Chitayat's office INCORRECTLY coded the pre-surgery mandated office visit when submitting the claim to Blue Cross/Blue Shield, thus I received a bill for the office consultation as well. Again, this was WRONG because the visit was 100% covered (corroborated by Blue Cross multiple times) since it was my first colonoscopy and the Dr was in network. Since the Dr's office sent a particular code (the WRONG one), I was being told by Dr Chitayat's office that I was on the hook for the difference. My wife and I attempted to contact the office billing person for WEEKS and left multiple messages requesting a return call. They do not return phone calls at all. We finally went into the Dr's office and spoke directly with the office manager and explained that their billing person would not return messages and we were not going to pay a bill that was incorrectly submitted by them. The office manager referenced the billing person "being young and new" which, quite frankly, is irrelevant and reflective of a poorly managed practice. The office clearly has issues with their billing and in filing accurate claims. Our insurance has been quite helpful but said they can not change a submitted code and the Dr's office must do so and resubmit the corrected claim. Despite Dr Chitayat seeming to be a fine doctor (there were no issues with the actual procedure), I strongly recommend avoiding this practice unless you want never handling hassles due to their subpar billing procedures.

Finally get inside to a totally demolished lobby, find the elevator, go up to the UCLA office, sign in, it's 7 AM, for an 8 AM appointment, I was told I needed to be there an hour ahead of my 8 o'clock apt. The women at the desk ask why am I here so early, the Doctor doesn't come in until 8:30, again, I was told by UCLA to be there by 7:00. So I precede to wait. Around 7:30 a couple come in says there apt is at 8:30, the receptionist tells them it's at 9:30 and the women pitches a holy fit and insist it's at 8:30 and will not take no for an answer. So to quiet her down they take her husband back ahead of me, ( we both had the same Dr). I question the fact that he jumped the line, they insist they just lied to quit the wife down (she has left so didn't hear my conversation) but I now sit out in the lobby for another 15 min when they finally take me back, get me ready for my procedure and roll me into a corner so I couldn't see anything, the receptionist comes back and tells me I'm still going to be first, at 8:30, and the gentleman they took back first is in a corner somewhere and again I'm told he will have to wait, I'm first in line but the Dr running late because she has small children and it's the first week of school????!! By around 8:45 I'm still waiting when they finally take me into a procedure room where I wait until 9:00, another 15 min when the Dr FINALLY shows up. Come to find out he jumped the line and the reason the Dr was late is she was doing his procedure first ahead of me! My husband was in the lobby when he came out to join his loud mouth wife! Moral of the story is if you are obnoxious and loud enough you jump to the front of the line! My husband sat in the waiting room for 3 hours because of this and nobody their seemed to give a hoot. Never again, I'm going to find a different Dr and facility and it won't be with UCLA!
