I have been a patient of Dr. M. Schenkel for four years. Recently, however, he has been consistently at least 30 minutes late to appointments. When he arrives, he often seems unprepared. I have to remind him of my medical history. In addition, just a few minutes into the visit, the office manager, repeatedly knocks on the door, urging him to wrap up every five minutes so he can see the next patient. That said, the front desk staff are always nice and friendly, which makes checking in and interacting with the office pleasant. Experiencing a doctor who is frequently late, unprepared, and rushed feels unprofessional and leaves me concerned about the quality of my care. read more

This doctor is right out of the 1950's - when MD's were not pressed for time and LISTED to the patient. Explains everything clearly and has great suggestions. No matter how long the wait, this doc is worth every minute. I would say he is the best doc I've ever encountered in my 70 years. read more

Dr. Schenkel is the first doctor (and I've had many over the years) who doesn't make you feel like you need to be hurried in and out to make room for the next person. On most occasions our visit is close to an hour long. It gives the chance for the patient to completely explain the purpose, and all the symptoms they are experiencing in a relaxed atmosphere. read more

Dr. Schenkel has gotten rude in his old age and takes even longer then ever. As some people have already mentioned on a this page, you can literally here everything being discussed in the next room (Hello HIPAA Violation). At my last (ever) appointment with Dr. Schenkel he made me wait over 40 minutes while he cracked jokes with the patient in the next room over, even after his wife knocked on the door 3 times to remind him about my appointment. I get that he is trying to personable and that's primarily why he has such high ratings on Yelp, but it's completely unacceptable to other people who actually have to be somewhere. read more

Good Doctor Except I cant Get a Hold of anyone at 818 348-5098. I call that number and It says emergency Number only??? Ok Well how then do I contact the Doctor? All Im doing Is trying to set up My yearly Physical thats all. He's a very likable guy and he's from the old school, w/no computers (yet). He is not a pill pusher like a lot of doctors I've had experiences with and is extremely patient and informative. Went to get evaluated by Dr. Schenkel, He referred to a specialist (of his choice) and it turned out that he wanted to charge me independently for each test needed to re-evaluate my condition (Sleep Apnea) I currently do not have health insurance so I shopped around and got a better price to be evaluated by a sleep center provider for which Dr. Schenkel would NOT give me a referral. Why do I need a primary physician if he can not give a referral to perform a simple test by a Sleep Center? I do believe the medical industry manipulates the system; that is why medical insurance is so high. We need reform in this industry. Doctor he sent me to want to charge me $385.00 just for the consultation! I betting it would not take him 10 minutes of actual work. read more

Dr. Schenkel and his wife Elizabeth do an amazing job running this office and providing honest, caring and genuinely all around boutique approach to health care. You will never feel rushed, not heard or ignored. Both Dr Schenkel and Elizabeth go over and beyond making sure you are taken care of including follow up after your appointment "just to see how you are doing" . I can't say enough good things about this practice and their approach to medicine. Be prepared however, taking their time with each patient can sometimes lead to a wait times for your appointment, but you will understand why once you are given the same respected and listing ear during your appointment. read more

I was very happy with my first visit here. Office was clean and fresh, they spend a lot of time getting my medical history and didn't cut any corners. When I finally let the doctor he was warm and friendly. I don't feel rushed and we chatted for a while about my overall Health. Dr. Schenkel is a friendly and competent dude but the wait times at his office are ABSOLUTELY EPIC. As in, Lord of the Rings length (almost). I've been there three times and had to sit there for over an hour every time. The final time I just got up and left. The office staff aren't really helpful though they're friendly enough but the idea that I would be annoyed at waiting 75 minutes for an appointment seemed a bit foreign to them.. So, in sum, if I needed someone to save my life I wouldn't mind if Mark was around but i'm actually in the process of looking for a new doctor because I just feel like a bit of a chump sitting around in a waiting room for such ridiculous wait times over and over again. I have no idea what the person below is talking about when they refer to this place being dirty and having roaches. The office has older fixtures but they are using the latest technology, and it's very clean. When I checked in the ladies at the front desk were very nice. They provided me with an ipad to enter my patient information. Also I can access this online through my account with their office. My wait time was about 10 minutes until I was ushered into an exam room. I was there for a physical and the assistant took my temperature, height, weight, blood pressure, and did a basic eye exam. It was only a few minutes later that the doctor came in to go over my medical history. Dr Schenkel is a very nice man and I really enjoyed his energy. He spoke to me in a gentle tone and was extremely professional. I felt very comfortable in their office. He checked out all the things they do when performing a annual physical and he answered all of my questions. I left their office feeling happy and very satisfied that I have found a new physician who I can trust. Will definitely be back next year and anytime I might need to visit in between. Great doctor. I had an annual wellness exam at his office. It was easy to schedule - the appointment was available within two weeks even though I was a new patient. The exam was fast yet thorough with little waiting for the doctor. The doctor was available to answer my questions. They don't draw blood for lab work in the office, but they have Quest Diagnostics lab on the same floor. I highly recommend the doctor. read more

The first thing you see when you walk into Dr. Schenkel's office is a clean, well organized waiting room. when you meet Dr. Schenkel, you immediately get a feeling of calmness due to the fact that he is an older, gray haired gentleman with many years of experience as a doctor. I have had regular checkups as well as major health concerns diagnosed at Dr. Schenkel's office. He has taken care of me, my wife, and my 3 kids. He is as sweet and kind and thorough as they come. To my surprise, my wait time has usually been about 10 minutes. Regardless of what my concerns were, the office staff, and Dr. Schenkel were extremely professional and courteous. Dr. Schenkel is a friendly and perfectly competent guy. He really does take the time to sit and talk with you about whatever problems you're having to make sure you understand the risks and benefits of treatment; and as mentioned before, he's definitely not a pill pusher. I didn't have any trouble with my wait time, but I did schedule an appointment near the middle of the day - probably weren't too busy then. The only unpleasant part of the whole experience was Dr. Schenkel had my prescription (some antibiotics) sent to the Pharmacy downstairs for quick pick-up. I only had to wait about 10 minutes for my prescription to be filled, but the Pharmacy seemed disorganized, and the staff seemed very unprofessional. I will be returning to Dr. Schenkel for future care, but I'll probably be picking up any prescriptions somewhere else. read more

I visited Schenkel for the first time a couple months ago. I got a physical, but I also had a lot of other questions for him. He was very nice, but the whole time I felt very rushed and he kept trying to leave. I had to call him back twice saying I wasn't done yet. In my opinions, doctors should ask you if there's any other concerns before they excuse themselves. Then there's the staff. They obviously didn't really know what they were doing. Making an appointment took three tries. And then when I requested a copy of my lab results, they claimed they would fax it over and never did. I had to call back several times before I finally got it. And here's what inspired me to sign up for yelp and write a review: I called last week because I was sick. I called at 12:15 and got a recording that they close at 12:30 for lunch. So obviously the nurses are skipping out early. I left a message for someone to call me back because I was sick and needed to get some medicine. NO ONE RETURNED MY CALL. Not that day, not the next day, not at all. I ended up having to pay $75 to go to Urgent Care and was diagnosed with bronchitis. I give 3 stars to Dr. Schenkel, but his staff gets negative stars. I won't be going back. read more

I have been going to Dr. Schenkel since I was 13 years old... then I moved away during college years and never found a doctor that I felt cared enough about me like he had. So, even though he was nearly 30 minutes away from my apartment, I started going back to him once I was an adult. So, now...I have been back with him for nearly 10 years and I have moved closer to him. Is that weird that it was a relief when I bought my new home that I would be closer to one of my favorite doctors? Anyway, here is what is so great: 1. He doesn't rush you. He takes the time to hear what's going on, why you are there and to give you ideas about what may be going on. He just takes a seat and talks to you like a normal person. He's not intimidating or too business like. He reminds you of the old school type of doc that knew your entire family. 2. He will bust out a medical journal and look things up right there in front of you. I love that when he doesn't know something, he looks it up... or I have even had him call a colleague with a certain specialty to ask them a question. 3. He won't just give you a pill pack to fix a problem. He will advise you of the adverse reactions and how those may not be worth the initial medication. 4. He apologizes for running late. Look, sometimes it happens...but at least this guy is man enough to make eye contact, say your name and apologize for your wait. 5. If you need to get in to see him for an emergency...and you are willing to wait a bit... they will get you in. 6. His office isn't all slick white, multi complex... it's a down home normal doctors office. Simple...but filled with good care. He's my kind of doctor... and I am thrilled that I found a house near him. :) read more

I found Dr. Schenkel's office through YELP and thanks to the review below mine. He's fantastic! He studied in Canada, so he's not an overprescribing, unnecessary testing, insurance hungry physician. He was willing to work with me both homeopathically and synthetically. He is extremely knowledgeable and I trust him with my health. I am so happy to have found such a hand's on doctor in my area. Extremely uncleanly and unprofessional. They had lost my appointment (which I had made just a few days prior). I then waited an hour until I went back into a room. The walls are so thin I heard EVERYTHING that Dr. Schenkel and the other patient were discussing. It was disgusting. Then a cockroach crawled on me. At which point I had been waiting for 90 minutes, so I left. TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, UNPROFESSIONAL, DIRTY, UNCARING, I would literally rather go to a free clinic in downtown LA. *Edit* I feel I need to edit this based off recent experiences. Dr Shenkel is a great doctor and his staff are pleasant, 5/5 there. However, the lab you're referred to is definitely not. The staff who admisiter the tests aren't bad, but the billing department is absolutely horrid. 3 incorrectly files insurance claims, all the while sending me billing statements saying it's pass due. I would call and they would say they're working on the insurance claim and I shouldn't be getting any statements and to disregard. Yet I kept receiving them, and had to keep calling them to verify. 3 months this went on to get 1 single claim handled correctly. I had to have my insurance call them twice to tell them exactly what was needed, and somehow it still doesn't get filed correctly. So while this may not be a reflection of the Dr Shenkel and how his office is run, the lab you're referred can cause you months of annoyance. ______________________________________________________________ Dr. Shenkel is great. He's very honest and forward with his suggestions and diagnosis and doesn't force anything on you. Dr. Schenkel himself is GREAT he gets a 5star, very nice easy to work with, gets you in and out, and is very professional ... however the office is why I'm ranking it a 2. Right from the beginning the front desk staff was fairly rude and I wasn't listened to. They mis-categorized my first appt. so I had to come back in for the same appt twice, then I had to still go to a different office to get blood work done. They messed up on my prescription right from the start, I had to call the office on multiple occasions to get it cleared up. Then, today I call to get my prescription filled (I understand I called with little notice, and that's my fault... the office closes super early on fri), BUT 2 separate employees told me they'd take care of it, and or call me back WHICH NEVER HAPPENED. I wouldn't have ever bothered with the review, but the customer service at this office is VERY poor, I don't think it's worth being ignored and made to feel unimportant... read more
