Princess Auto - front of store

Princess Auto

(6 reviews)

$$

First of all, let me say that "Princess Auto" is a bit of a misnomer. Besides a few light bulbs and…read moresome basic electrical parts, you can't buy many auto parts there (There are no brake parts, no starter motors, alternators or suspension parts, for example.) And "Princess"??? What's up with that? The "Princess" in the name kept me from going the store when I first moved to Ottawa from BC for at least a week. Then I got my hands on the flyer. I was in. To be completely sexist, it's totally a guy place. A tinkering, wrenching, dirty hands on , Tim the toolman kind of guy place. If you like to build stuff, this is it. Welding equipment, a pretty complete hydraulics department, compressors and complete small engines? Check. Car lifts? Metal rod? Trailer parts? Check, check and check. And tools. Lotsa of tools. The "Power Fist" (yeah, I know) brand is a budget line and some of these are iffy. Their "Pro point" line is much higher quality and matches or exceeds some of the better known name brands. I used to swear by Mastercraft and Sears hand tools, (Snap-on is for poseurs.) but no more. And then there is the surplus section. Here's where you can get HDMI cables for low, low prices. BB guns. A drone. Even some Apple Istuff accessories, but only a generation or two back from the latest. Weaknesses? Well the surplus department is just that, so I regret not buying more reading glasses when they had a pile for sale. I lost or broke a couple of pairs, but there's none left at PA. Boo hoo. More seriously, the fastener department is not great. As in nuts and bolts. They have a selection of middle to large size bolts (And nuts and washers.) but don't look for anything smaller than 1/4". I would like to see the #6-#12 sizes. The snacks in the check out line are overpriced and some might be a decade old. But the gleaming wrenches, super sales, and no hassle return policy keep me coming back for more!

super great store. have everything for mechanical or electrical.. good staff great serviceread more

Petro Canada - Gas pumps and sign

Petro Canada

(1 review)

Cyrville

I filled my car's gas tank up once while I was in Ottawa. After stuffing myself with grub for lunch…read moreat a nearby restaurant last Friday, I saw this Petro-Canada and stopped by. It had steady business. I had no problem finding a free pump. I tried paying at the pump, but the authorization was declined. I tried it again and it did the same thing. It was odd. The reason why this review gets a high rating is my seeking help from the man at the convenience store attached to this gas station. I couldn't tell if it was an issue with my credit card or the pump. I asked if he could pre-approve an amount for me. We went through the process of approving $70 worth of gas on my credit card. This transaction was also denied. It proved to me that there was something weird happening with my credit card. I thanked him for his efforts troubleshooting with me. I sat in my car and called my credit card company. It is known to do fraud checks. It decided to initiate a check and put a hold on my card when I tried to pay for gas at the pump. I find my credit card company to be odd. I've been in Ottawa for a week and you now flag a gas pre-authorization on it? I got the hold taken off my credit card. I was then able to pay at the pump. I swiped my Petro-Points card to earn points, my 407 ETR card to get a discount for each litre of gas, and them my credit card to pay. It worked at long last. Woo hoo! I successfully filled my gas tank up. I was happy. It was way too much work after lunch, but I'm glad that I was still alert. It's a decent gas station. I'd return here again to fill up my car's gas tank and hope that my credit card is hold-free due to a perhaps random fraud check. (238)
