In the past their food has been good BUT last week I went there and they gave me essentially uncooked meat that gave me food poisoning for two days. I messaged them and sent picture of the gross food they served me and to tell them that their food was not prepared properly and it made me sick for like 48 hours (Note that I only ate half of my burger before deciding it might make me sick and stopped and I still got sick). At first they said if I found the receipt they would refund me so I went digging around in the gross trash but came up empty. After I told them I couldn't find the receipt I asked if they could look it up and they told me they couldn't find the order from 6:30 when I told them we called and they said that it was actually at 7, Which they close at 7, so they said they shouldnt have even taken our order so I sent them a screenshot of the phone call made when we placed the order that said 6:35 and they just sent me back a receipt that said 7:00 and then said they couldn't refund me but they could remake the food, which obviously I just got food poisoning from them I didn't want their food, so at that point I was like all right screw this I don't care anymore I'm just gonna tell everyone that you guys made me sick with your food and you're not refunding me for the inedible undercooked meat that you served me (and 4 other people) and their response was that they were "no longer interested in helping" and that I should "go elsewhere". So obviously now here I am posting a picture of what they said to me with pictures I took of their gross food because I now feel obligated to after I told them off. So yeah I've been putting this off for a few days now because I didn't feel like writing all of this out but it's not chill that a business wouldn't refund you for giving you bad food and food poisoning especially when I had picture evidence and all they did was try to say that I was lying about the time and I was lying about not having the receipt and implying I was lying about food poisoning because "no one had reported illness". Just not a fan anymore... This used to be the best burger in town but I'm afraid between the increase in price the decrease in customer service and the major decline in quality of food I just have to bid farewell. I called in an order to go. Nothing fancy, just a bacon cheeseburger and fries. They told me 20 minutes. Okay it's lunch time so I gave them 30 since I know they get busy. I showed up and paid for my order and sat there waiting for another 45 minutes. Good bye lunch break. I took it back to work and and the French fries were hardly cooked. Fresh potato crunchy not yummy French fry crunchy. That made me sad. Then I straightened up the mess of a burger I had and in the process realized the once succulent juicy perfectly cooked grass fed beef patty that used to reside in between the bun has been replaced with a charred dry hockey puck type thing. Also, While I was waiting patiently I couldn't help but notice some phone orders that got called in after mine had been prepared and picked up long before mine was even started. Definitely the best burger in Humboldt County. Disregard anything before November 16' those reviews are from the previous ownership. New food is great! Burgers are hand-pressed every day and everything is super fresh. **they have great gluten free options** and are aware of allergies! They even have a separate fryer that's exclusively GF. Fire garlic fries/ beer battered onion rings and other interesting choices like Shark Bites or Old Bay fries. The food is all made fresh to order, so sometimes it takes a little longer but totally worth it! It's NOT "fast food" it's REAL food! They use only local grass-fed (hormone free) beef and all beef franks too. Burgers, hot dogs, hand cut fries and beer! Can't forget about the 3 taps in the back, ask the counter person for their current selections. They have milkshakes too, and can do root beer floats! Our family is a fan of Surfside Burger Shack. Mostly order 1/3 classic cheeseburgers adding avocado. I always get onion rings, which are the best rings in Humboldt County. All 3 of my children love the burgers also and the hand-breaded chicken. We also do the chili cheese fries. Husband goes for the double cheese burger. Always moist, perfectly seasoned and the buns are toasted. Went in last month during burger week for the Italian Burger special and I was in Heaven. That burger tasted just like a meatball sandwich. The place is always clean and I am always greeted with a smile and treated with dignity. Once my fries were under cooked, but the cook was new. I wasn't mad. They remade them. Surfside is a great place to get a meal. I have been to the restaurant several times and have never had an experience even close to what a few people have described here, it is like they are not talking about the same restaurant. The food is always cooked/grilled just the way I ordered it. The portions are large, I can never finish all of the food, even though I try because its so yummy. The Owner & Employees both, every time I have been in the restaurant, have the same great attitude and are happy you have come in! I also really like that they trade locally from their meats & spices to local breweries and cider companies. They REALLY go out of of their way to do it right! When I first moved to town, surfside was where I regularly ate my lunches when I was off work; they def had some of the best food. However, I stopped eating there some time ago because on multiple occasions in a row, the food made me sick. It turns out that this does not appear to be an isolated incident, others have had a similar experience-- and the owner has shown to have poor customer service skills and has been handling the situations (as well as negative reviews) incredibly unprofessionally. While I already had no intentions to go back, I would caution future goers looking for a good burger (or otherwise), and personally recommend continuing to search elsewhere. All of their cooks are long time employees, and make every item PERFECT. Nicer than every other burger i've had, humboldt grassfed beef, huge fucking burgers, the menu has variety for everybody, and you can't eat the whole meal ever cuz it's so goddamn big. TRY SURFSIDE IF YOU LIKE: in-n-out, five guys burgers and fries, or pretty much any burger of fried item, they're the best anything foodwise i've ever had, period. they're also awesome at making long lines go away in 2 seconds. awesome customer service, get the special thats advertised, and DEFINATELY ask for ranch. Way too expensive for a burger place serving simple burgers, fries, and hot dogs. Got the hot dog meal and it was over $10.00 with the drink and fries...for a hot dog and it wasn't even that great. If I am going to pay that much I want to be waited on. Also don't go to this place if you have to do something after because you are going to smell like straight up grease for hours after you leave- grease smell stuck to clothes and hair. They say fresh local beef but it is really "ice boxed" which apparently isn't frozen but pretty darn close. In my opinion, not the best burger place in town. read more

Strolled into this restaurant for the first time today. Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. Certainly not a "fast food joint." The produce in my meal was fresh and crisp. The meat was flavorful and had a nice seasoning touch, not too over powering. I was told by the staff the burgers are hand pressed daily and sourced from Humboldt County. I will certainly be back on my next trip through Eureka. I ordered the western bacon cheese burger with garlic fries. No photos, I left my phone in my bag while I devoured my lunch. read more

This place was voted by the readers of NCJ as having the best onion rings, so I decided to give them a try. Ordered a bacon cheese burger with onion rings. Well, the burger was almost raw, and bacon wasn't cooked all the way. The bun was just sad. But the onion rings were great actually. BUT - the onion rings were the exact same onion rings I have had elsewhere, namely the Philly Cheesesteak place down on Broadway. They obviously buy them from the same vendor, so they're not "home made" at all. This place is a joke. read more

This place is consistently delicious. I've been here 4 or 5 times in just over a year and today I ordered "The Big Wave Bacon Cheddar" 1/5 with a mix of fries and onion rings with a Lagunitas IPA. This was a match made in heaven! I immediately noticed how neat my burger was. My tomatoes was 1/4 inch thick and never once slid as I bit into my burger. I got no modifications and enjoyed the burger as it came. It was totally worth the smelly walk down E St. to enjoy this local delight! read more

Oh man, this place is awesome. I got tired of spending like 10 bucks on a mediocre burger from other local places who shall remain nameless, only to continually wonder what all the hype is about while my bun falls apart as I eat my soggy burger. They have the BEST burgers in town!! The HUGE quantity of fries and onion rings are to die for! Top them off with garlic and OMG, they are good. Lived in the area for 13 years. Tried many burgers. This place is my favorite place. High quality ingredients. Local beef, fresh produce, hand cut fries and onion rings. I have brought family here from southern California, from Arizona, Utah, taken my boss there. I highly recommend this place. Beer, cider and wine is a plus. read more

Hands down best burgers in Humboldt. Always amazing customer service and very clean dining area. I usually order classic cheeseburger can't go wrong with that with onion rings. Definitely a quality burger joint. Local grass fed beef cooked medium, though I like it medium rare, but they'll cook to order. Priced well for the quality, definitely not a fast food burger, you can tell a lot goes into it. Homemade fries and sides too. read more
