My wife read the menu while we were driving and made herself drool and by the time we got here, we were both starving. I say that as there is a difference when you go to eat somewhere and you are hungry versus being famished. We were famished. Walking in, it reminded me of other crab shacks we have been. Nothing wrong with that. The wife is basically a mermaid so will eat any and all from the sea or ocean. I did find it interesting that there are signatures over pretty much every single surface you can find sans the tables and floor (there were even a couple on the TV screen). Too much? For me, yes. But unto each their own. Other than that, pretty cool place. Everyone was friendly. Though we were having a late dinner, there were still a a lot of dinners so service wasn't the fastest. But they were still attentive and checked on us until we got our waitress. My wife ordered a bucket with shrimp with head on, Manilla clams and calamari with 3 sauces. I got the fried half and half, shrimp and catfish but I also got an order of their special seasoning for me (which evidently includes all their seasonings) and their hushpuppies. (They are frozen but the waitress said they are good so I decided to give them a shot.) When the food arrived, it was a good amount of food. It also came really quickly. My wife barely talked for the entire meal. Other than praises on how good everything was. That is saying something. She is definitely picky with her seafood. I tried some of it and it was great. Mine hit the spot. Fried food isn't hard but it is also easily messed up, all mine tasted fresh and the batter was very tasty. No bad taste from the oil. The sauces/seasoning. That is the best thing to me. it is all in melted butter with garlic and other seasonings. They really add great flavor. Enough that we took them with us. All in all. They came out hot, juicy, easy to peal, spicy but not the heat that makes you sweat. I was VERY pleased with the food. Beer was cold and there's a full bar. It was very casual with paper "table clothes", hand written messages spread wall to wall. The staff and guests were all very friendly. I have not a bad thing to say about this place. If you like seafood this place is great. It has a very laid back atmosphere and is decorated as such. They allow you to tag throughout the building and I could see how some people could find a certain charm in it. This location serves Coke and has plenty of parking because it's in Moore Plaza. No matter what you order everything will have the seafood kind of smell. So as long as you're okay with that it's worth a try. She was solo and managed to completed all the orders coming in while being super attentive to me and the other bar patrons. I left a very generous tip because she was fabulous! This was my first and last visit to the Surfing Crab. Let me start by saying the crab legs were good (how can you mess up crab legs). The service was horrible. 7 of us went there to celebrate my granddaughter's 13th birthday. We ordered our food and it took forever to come to our table and the restaurant was not that crowded. I ordered Snow Crab legs and 3 ordered the Crab Leg combination platter. We all specified we wanted melted butter on the side. I got my crab legs covered with tons of garlic and melted butter as did one other. The others came out with no melted butter. The two of us with the garlic butter sent it back. The legs come in a double plastic bag and they shake the bag with the melted butter and legs and then dump it on your plate at a separate table so everything is covered in messy butter. When they brought out the corrected order, they dumped the legs right in front of us onto the platter splattering melted butter everywhere, even though we specified again that we wanted the butter on the side. My son-in-law said to please empty the bags at a different table so his mother wouldn't get splattered. They ignored him and splattered her. The other two finally got their melted butter on the side and the long wait made their meal lukewarm. The other three folks at our table ordered fried flounder baskets and it was good. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more
