Who farted? No really. Did I fart cause why is everyone so rude? I purchased some high-end tile here a few months ago. The planning was simple. Everyone seemed friendly enough. But when I came to pick it up, it was a whole other story. They were rude. They didn't want to help. It was like I was asking for a huge favor for them to even do their job! The tile I ordered is made by Clay Haus, and Clay Haus will only deliver to Surface. So its not like I could pick it up anywhere else. The order was also left incomplete and Surface did not apologize or offer to remedy it and I was sent across town to gather the remainer. Poor customer interface. Poor communication. Once they have your money they do not care about the service they provide. I can't help by wonder why I was treated like I farted in an elevator. read more

What a fun and pleasant experience choosing window treatments at Surface for our new home. Desiree's experience, smarts, and efficiency all came into play. She was also quite enthusiastic and cheery which made it so fun too. She spent a lot of time with us going over things that we would never even think of. Desiree even brought in the Graber Blind representative, also fabulous so everything was just perfect. The shop is quite nice inside with so many lovely choices. The blinds we chose are a definite highlight in our new place. Desiree was always at the ready to respond to our needs and amazing with timing at getting our blinds installed. This is the place that speaks to me - my new condo is 17 years old with all the original stuff including acres of bamboo flooring and really ugly granite - lots and lots of it. Not my style. My project manager- designer Porter Bishop and I will be spending some quality time together. We started with two bathrooms- yup we have it all- more ugly granite, round under-mount sinks, leaking faucets.- the full meal deal. Mr,Bishop and I have that refresh well in hand - one day, shopping - done. Installation getting booked. Great experience. Will be moving on to new floors. Replacing some Truly ugly wall lights. I don't anticipate replacing bathroom tile but if you are in the mood the tile selection at surface will delight you- a whole lot of great, like really, really great choices. Candy store for house crazies- raising my hand here. And, the materials are well priced, and how nice to work with people who know their vendors. Highly recommended. read more

I wandered into Surface because we had several home improvement projects going at once, and needed some inspiration. My first impression was that this place was going to be too expensive for our budget, but their products sure are pretty! We decided to do our kitchen backsplash first, and didn't want the same boring subway tile that everyone is doing. Back to Surface! Brock was very patient with us, and pulled out a bunch of different samples. We were able to take them home and look at them in our space, which was very helpful. We picked the one we liked best, and then comparison shopped around - Surface's rates were actually the best we found for the product we liked. The quote they gave for installation was hundreds of dollars less than what our contractor quoted, PLUS they discounted the material since we used their installer. The installer was very meticulous and super nice. Our backsplash looks amazing, we're so happy we went with Surface - we got what we loved for about half the price that we expected to spend. Stopped by here originally to get some dimensions for a Schluter drain that wasn't available online. Evan was helpful and while I waited I saw some tile designs I wanted to check out later. They requested I make an appointment so I called a few days later. I asked for an appointment to come by and look at bathroom floor and wall tiles. They told me they couldn't offer me an appointment but if I wanted to come down right now they had no one in the store. I stated that I was hoping to come by at lunchtime and they promptly told me I would have to make an appointment for that. Confused yet? I was. I asked again, "Can I make an appointment?" and they now said I would have to email in to someone else because they "make their own schedule and would get back to me with options." WHAT!?!? I'm not sure if it's elitism or just plain old incompetence but if they need me to jump through that many hoops just to see some tile samples, I can go somewhere else. If you value your time and sanity, find another showroom. If you enjoy feeling like you're in an absurdist version of "Who's On First?" these are your folks. read more

We are previous customers, from a number of years ago, and I attempted to visit the showroom yesterday. This was after reviewing all available information online. Including website instructions to visit or call for a free estimate. Hours are posted and only Saturday is listed as by appointment only. Imagine how surprised and dismayed I was to arrive and see a note on the door that an appointment was required! And, that an appointment had been required for the past month. After driving well over an hour to reach their location! My frustration is not that the showroom is open by appointment only. We completely understand the need to adjust for COVID requirements. My significant frustration is that this information was not available until I was at the front door. Our previous experience and purchase was positive enough that both my husband and I wanted to do business with Surface again. So- I asked if an appointment was available for any time soon (next hour or two) and was told that info was not possible to provide, as each designer manages their own schedules. Not that it will matter to them, as we are unlikely to be their target customers, we will never purchase from Surface again. Tile for our kitchen remodel project was secured elsewhere. read more

Ugh, our dream mid-century house came with the ugliest 1990s kitchen "improvements". We needed help...and now! Jamie and Gary at Surface gave us just what we wanted. Jamie helped me find the perfect backsplash tile and quartz countertops to fit our existing original cabinets and layout. We even expanded the job to include a powder room. We had a couple of bumps along the way: Covid-19 shutting down fabricators, mis-matched quartz slabs, engineering problems; through it all Gary made sure the job was done right. Surface handled everything including appliance installation, drywall repair and plumbing, unlike other firms I had contacted about the project. Pricing was detailed, upfront and very fair. They never failed to return my calls, texts and emails immediately, too. They were patient in getting me samples and listening to my ideas, and it all turned out just as we envisioned. We have a beautifully updated functional kitchen and bath that fit seamlessly into our home. Bottom line is: we'd use Surface again! read more

Looks like a common theme with the service at Surface. I went in to the store looking specifically for Flor carpet samples as they are a retailer for them. When we entered the store we were greeted and shown where the Flor samples were. That is where the service ended. Both employees were with clients at the time. We proceeded to pick out samples and lay them out on a table to view. Clearly we were engaged and interested. One of the customers left which then left a sales person free to ask if we needed help. Instead, they went over to the other salesperson and clients and proceeded to complain on how everyone comes in at the same time. We continued to work through what we wanted and had made a decision but at no time were we approached. We decided to leave and order online or take our business elsewhere. We walked through the store, right by them, still no word, until we got to the front door and we heard a "thank you". If I were Flor, I would find another retailer. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. We did ultimately order all the tile for our bathroom remodel from them because I loved the selection they had and helped us work within our price range. There are several people who work here who do really want to help you, are knowledgeable about the products, design and even installation. I've walked into many tile places and never had anyone ask if I needed help and that actually wasn't the case here. Where things went south was after we did order all of our products and the lack of communication between our sales rep and us. We were always having to call to follow up on our orders. The products were not delivered when they were promised to us. Some of this was the manufacturers fault, some of the product delays were Surface's fault. I really want to love this place because they have great products and some of the people that work there are great, but overall, it was just an ok experience that I expected more from. read more

I really hate to leave nasty reviews but... I feel I have no choice but to warn others. Beautiful product, friendly sales people, well stocked showroom and surprisingly competitive pricing. BUT if my experience is any indication of their customer service, I highly advise others to look elsewhere. I had a floor installed a couple months ago and the number mistakes in both the installation and the ordering process left me pulling my hair out. Problems which were entirely the creation of Surface's sales and account staff. Many opportunities were given to make good on their mistakes. Now I am tired of their games and just want to move on. If you are detail oriented and expect things to be done correctly, these people will drive you crazy. read more

I was referred to Surface by my real estate agent. The new house that I bought need its floors refinished. I called Surface and they sent over Aaron. He evaluated the floors and said that he'd get back to me in a few days with an estimate. After four weeks and 5-6 unreturned phone calls asking for the estimate, I finally heard from him. This was only after my real estate agent called Aaron to complain. When I did hear from Aaron he said that he wanted to come by again and take a second look so he could provide me a good estimate. Wasn't that the point of the first meeting? Needless to say, I didn't use Surface. In a nutshell Surface was unprofessional and a waste of my time. From they way I was disregarded you would think it was the boom days of Portland real estate. Let's see how long this company survives with this kind of service. read more

Attempted to have them quote a kitchen and bath remodel, spent over two hours in their shop muddling through details to be blown away by the price tag then being pressured to sign a contract. I then read the poor Yelp reviews (which I should have done first). I found an independent contractor and he bought the material through a supply house and helped with the design, saved a ton of money not using them. read more

Surface is a great place to do business with! What made it an amazing experience is Aaron Randal. That man is a genius and helped us so much with choices of tile whether it be for the floor, backslashes , countertops, showers, you name it. He helped us match the whole house up. Since we were building a brand new home we needed help with selection of everything. Also, the subcontractors that surface uses to install the tile were awesome! We got tile, countertops and flooring from them. The choices for the marmoleum we used was crazy! They had so many options and always allowed us to check out samples to bring them home. My co-worker told me about Surface the other day, saying that he had a great experience with them, so I told her and we finally got the chance to go in the other day. As soon as you walk in you're captivated by the show room. It's very well designed, simple, and gorgeous. Immediately after walking in we were greeted by an employee there, Anika. Surface has some really great stuff in their showroom. The vast selection is beautifully displayed, and you can get to know your surfaces before you commit to anything. The customer service is what makes me rate Surface as a 3. I even took the extra step to make an appointment and was still treated rather rudely at the start. It was almost as if until the salesperson knew I was going to spend a bundle, I was treated as if I didn't rate. Still, the selection is great and I was given some good advice...so I'd definitely shop here again - I just think it's wise to know going into it that you might not be treated like a Queen (or King,) and I guess sometimes that's gotta be okay...or does it? read more

The installers did an incredible job and Emily helped me put together some great designs -- she's super helpful and friendly. I wanted to love this place and even really liked the person I tried to work with. I was told I would have an estimate for countertops, sink and tile that day or the next for sure. I went back in the next day at end of day and he wasn't in, so another sales person checked notes and he hadn't even written down the tile we picked out let alone done anything with the estimate. Several days later I finally got an estimate and it was missing some key things we had talked about, after a week, he texted me and asked if I had gotten his revised estimate which I hadn't. I went to Milan, they don't do "everything" but they will make sure you get some good people to work with in whatever trade/surface you need! read more

Since we are planning on remodeling our two bathrooms and also our kitchen, Surface was a definite stop on our list! When we walked in we were greeted very warmly and told it was not a 'hands in your pocket' kind of place and to feel free to look around. Great, I thought, my kind of place! Maybe it was because they were not busy this Saturday, but we were asked if we needed help anytime we pulled something out to look at it. After 6 times, I was just a little annoyed, but not enough to leave. My mom found a tile leaning against the wall very much to her liking and tipped it over to see price, manufacturer etc. This was met with a very rude "Do you need something?" from the salesperson who was standing behind us. After we said 'no thank you, we were just looking' there was a very awkward 10 second silence followed by hushed whispers between the two salespeople. While this could very well have been coincidence it felt as if they were talking about us. The first time it happened was bad enough, but it happened numerous times! We would chat with the salesperson a bit about what we envisioned for our space, price of tile etc. and then the salesperson would retreat to the back office and the hushed whispers would continue. While I know it's very conceited of me to believe they were talking about us, and to give them the benefit of the doubt they probably weren't. However it still felt very awkward, and I feel it was very unprofessional behaviour. I still found exactly what I wanted there, so I will end up going back to purchase the tile for our bathrooms. But, I will be expecting to be treated condescendingly so hopefully it won't catch me totally off guard next time. read more

Heed the warnings of many other reviews you will find here. Communication and follow through are not the core values of this business, nor are the ideas of timeliness and customer service. We should have known from the very first interaction, or lack thereof since our designer did not show up for the scheduled appointment, to go to another place but hindsight is always 20/20. Multiple times during our renovations we heard the words from this company that, "We will take care of this today for you," only to take care of it ourselves after many days had passed. We engaged their services months prior to construction starting to ensure we had all of the products and costs needed to start the job, which we insisted on multiple occasions. We blame ourselves that we let them continue when we did not receive an estimate or the products needed until after the work actually started (months later). And when we received the estimate, it was more than double what we were initially told it would be around despite advising what our budget was when we were even considering products to go with. To make matters worse, there were multiple ordering errors (by Surface) that resulted in our project being delayed by many weeks, with one such error because the wrong tile was ordered and installed and then had to be removed. To quote one of our subs when they came in for their part, "If we are here before the tile is finished, you know something is wrong." There are plenty of designers in Portland. I recommend checking one of them out. read more
