Wowwww! We are SO GLAD we found Surf Ensenada! We took the kids on a little Carnival Cruise and we were looking for something not as touristy or crowded for our day in port. After researching surf lessons we came across Surf Ensenada and decided to give it a shot. My inquiry was responded to almost immediately and all of my questions were answered. The day of the surf lessons Lulu (Miguel's wife) met us on time and exactly where they had instructed us to go outside of the cruise terminal. After a short 5 minute drive to their cute little surf shop the kids were in their wet suits and following Ronnie (their amazingly patient surf instructor) down to the waves. Lulu had beach chairs and umbrellas set up for us as well as water. Ronnie gave the kids brief but informative instructions on land and then off in to the water they went. We were the only family there for the day so the children got their own private 2 hour lesson with Ronnie! He could not have been more kind, sweet and patient with the kids we were so impressed! I was looking for something to do during our cruise and docking at Ensenada when I saw surfing lesson at the Carnival website. Then I kept looking out of the site and I saw two 5 star reviews for Surf Ensenada in both Yelp and TripAdvisor. It was $10 less than what they advertise in the Carnival website and so I placed my trust on my fellow reviewers and so glad I did. Miguel picked us up in front of a museum near the Carnival Cruise dock. Miguel was one awesome dude and very chill. He was patient and made the lesson fun and easy for our 1st timer kids. He was very encouraging and positive that 2 of my kids who were usually shy and reserved were so much at ease and cant get enough of surfing. The beach was a bit windy and has a little bit more waves (I myself grew up near a beach) but that did not deter my kids. He was also very accomodating and even took us on a tour around downtown Ensenada. He also brought us to the best fish taco we've ever had that my wife decided to copy it when we got home. He have us a few tips on how to deal with street and shop vendors and gave us good advise on which resto serves good food. Just got back from a great trip on the Carnival Imagination which stopped in Ensenada. The highlight of our trip was our day in Ensenada where our boys had surf lessons with Miguel. Our boys are 12 and 14. He was a great instructor and made sure our kids had a lot of fun. They were both riding waves in no time. He took care of all the details including picking us up outside the cruise ship, setting up chairs at the beach, providing wetsuits and surfboards for the boys. After the lessons he took us for a great tour of Ensenada which started with an epic taco joint for lunch. After that he took us to see the blowhole in La Bufadora. Surf Ensenada is an amazing family-owned company, and we are so glad we did this instead of an excursion through our cruise line. My husband and 10-year-old daughter did the surf lessons. My two younger daughters and I paid $16 each for the spectator fee. Miguel fitted them with wetsuits and had beach toys and chairs set up also. His wife, Lulu and two boys joined us as well. Super sweet family. We went to a local taco shop for lunch, Tacos Pueblas which was fresh and delicious. We added a tour to La Bufadora last minute, which was $16 per person. We left our debit card on the ship and only had enough cash to shop, but Miguel took us anyway on good faith that we would pay him (which we did through PayPal)! He is studying to be a federal tour guide, so our little family had a personal history lesson as we drove up to the blowhole. It was really helpful to have him while we were going through the tiendas to get the best deals possible. Prior to sailing on the cruise, I was nervous about paying in full. I emailed the company and paid 30% of the total through PayPal to reserve our spot. Miguel picked us up outside of the port in an SUV. I highly recommend this excursion! Miguel is incredible. We hired his company to be our surf instructors for the day, but he ended up being so much more: driver, tour guide, photographer, and friend! We surfed for a few hours and he brought everything we needed: wet suits, boards, instructors and a few things extra, like snacks and beers. I found Surf Ensenada while researching fun things to do as part of a shore excursion on a Carnival Cruise. The official surf lesson excursion offered by Carnival was full, so I kept Googling a bit, and that led me to Surf Ensenada. The reviews were all fabulous, so I wanted to give them a try. My travel companions weren't into surfing and didn't want to be locked into an all-day activity, so I emailed and asked about renting boogie boards. I got a yes, and they gave us a flexible reservation time for only a $15 deposit via PayPal. A few days before our reservation, Miguel emailed me and offered to pick us up at the cruise port. Initially, it was going to be $5 per person, but then he emailed back and said we could get a ride free of charge. We assumed it was because they would be picking up other people at the same time, but his wife, Lulu, picked us up in a private car right outside the cruise terminal, and it was just us -- we didn't have to wait for anybody else. (Note: If you find yourself in the same situation, do what we did and email a picture of your group so that they can spot you.) We had a fun, relaxed time on Playa Hermosa, boogie boarding and soaking up the sun. (Lulu took us right to where the surf lesson was happening so that if we needed anything we had a contact person.) Right as we were ready to leave and were expecting to walk the block back to the shop to return our boards, Miguel appeared like magic and offered to drive us back to the cruise port. We said we wanted to grab lunch and do some shopping, and he dropped us off in the perfect spot to get delicious fish tacos at Bullo's and find souvenirs. He also showed us exactly how to get back to the cruise port and made sure we felt comfortable before he left. Miguel and Lulu are so much more than a surf/boogie board rental shop. Looking for something to do in Ensenada? This is it! We were on a cruise and Miguel picked up our group of nine right outside the port. Only five of us were surfing, but for a small fee, he drove us all. After a 5 minute drive, we were at Hermosa beach and they had all the boards and wetsuits laid out, along with chairs and bottles of water. We did a few stretches, learned some basics on how to get up on the board, and we were out on the water. Miguel and his crew were awesome! They were very attentive to the kids in our group and made sure everyone got a good few rides in. So much fun! I booked a Carnival cruise that included a stop in Ensenada. Not wanting to do the normal excursions or partying stuff, I looked up Tripadvisor's recommendations. I sent off an email to Miguel (Miky) and he responded within the day. In my email I asked him if my weight (255 lb), and semi-physical condition would be an issue; he replied that he had the board for me and would help me learn. He told me where to meet him and at what time. MAKE SURE TO GO OUT PAST THE GAURD GATES TO MEET HIM. HE WILL NOT BE PICKING UP WERE THE SHUTTLE PICK UP. After my lesson on the beach, it was out to the waves. It was great. With Miky's help, and instructions, I rode out 5 waves. Even after my initial frustration, Miky encourages me to keep trying. I must admit, like any sport, physical condition will determine the level of difficulty. This coming from a 255 lb, 48 year-old. After the lessons, we all went to enjoy tacos from a street stand Miky has gone to for over 20 years.... the tacos hit the spot. Then we were dropped of on the main strip. I will be sure to make this a "must do" when ever I stop in Ensenada. read more

"A Superb Experience" My sister and I took a cruise down to Ensenada and we wanted to go "off the cruise menu" for activities - specifically, we wanted to surf. This was my second time surfing and my sister's first. I did a quick search and found Surf Ensenada (and Miguel) on TripAdvisor. His reviews were overwhelmingly positive so we contacted him and, five days later, were surfing. The communication with Miguel/Surf Ensenada was easy. I gave him a call (via Skype) and asked if he had availability. He said yes, and he told me to email him with the day and time of our arrival, as well as our wetsuit sizes. We sent the email and he responded promptly with further instructions (the price, 30% down payment via PayPal, and instructions on where we would be picked up). The lessons were $55 USD per person for two hours (cheap). Upon arrival, we walked out of the ship and Miguel was actually standing there waiting for us. He told us (as he had mentioned in the email) to walk out of the cruise port terminal and the Suburban with the surfboards would be waiting for us. Don't expect Miguel to meet you right outside the ship like he did with us. I think this was just a rare occurrence. In any case, the Suburban was right outside the lift gates (where the guards are... about a five-minute walk). While Miguel owns and operates Surf Ensenada, he has a few instructors. Our instructor (and guide) for the day was Martin (a.k.a. Gordo). Gordo was INCREDIBLY friendly, respectful, and energetic. He took us directly to the beach, all the while asking polite questions and making sure we were comfortable. At the beach, Gordo set up chairs and an umbrella, brought out the surf gear, guided us through instructions on land, and led us through some stretches. He made sure we had water and was very attentive. The beach was very sandy and the ocean in that area was free from any reefs (so your feet are safe). This beach is an EXCELLENT place to learn to surf! The waves were coming in pretty frequently so we were getting a little beat up, but Gordo made sure we took our time. Since I had already had a lesson, he concentrated on my sister (who scored her first ride on her first try). After a couple hours, we all went to a nice little taco joint that Gordo recommended (about $7 USD for 4 tacos and 2 drinks) and then he took us to a margarita place. He went above and beyond, and we were absolutely grateful. After about 4 hours of surfing + hanging out, Gordo dropped us off on the main "strip" in Ensenada (at our request... he offered to take us to the ship as well). I highly recommend Surf Ensenada!!! Remember to tip your instructor (especially if they take you out after surfing). P.S. I almost forgot to mention that the water temperature was excellent (we went in July), but you are provided a wetsuit so you will have no worries. Finally, if you happen to have a rash guard (surf shirt), you may want to wear it under the wetsuit. It is common (if you are out for a while) to get a skin rash from the wetsuit rubbing against your skin. A rash guard protects from this. I am currently nursing a spot on my back because there was a bit of sand between me and the wetsuit. read more

Once we got to the beach, he had the wetsuits already waiting for us down on the beach. He even provided some bottled water for the group. Great company and great guy! Went on a 4 day Carnival Cruise from Long Beach-Catalina-Ensenada. The highlight of our trip was surfing in Ensenada. We had 4 beginning surfers on our party. Miguel was the best!! He picked us up in a surburban that holds 7 about 5 minutes away to the Ensenada beach. The waves were perfect and NO ONE around. The beach had clean showers and bathroom. The surfing equipment was a bit older and had some wear and tear. One of the surf board holders (rope on your ankle) he had to keep closed with a zip tie. We had a 2 hour lesson for 55$ and he dropped us off for shopping in downtown Ensenada. All the way to our shopping destination Miguel told us about the town and where the best tacos, ceviche and first made Margaritas were made. It was a perfect excursion. Miguel was a great host and surfer instructor. I will recommend him to anyone in the Ensenada area. read more

The hi-light of our trip!!! My friends and I wanted to do something fun while in Ensenada on our cruise, and we found it! Miguel was ready for us right outside the port, took us to beautiful playa hermosa, and had wetsuits, chairs, water and another great instructor Eddie waiting for us. Excellent communication, skilled, experienced, thoughtful, punctual, and professional. My wife booked us independent of the Carnival Cruises. Miguel arrived well before meet time just outside the cruise terminal with a van for our group of 6 surfers (12-47 year old) and 3 observers. Then drove us to Playa Hermosa where we wasted no time getting our wet suits and boards. After a brief beach warm up (about 5 minutes), it was off to the water. He and his very experienced team took us to the perfect break with a 2:1 student to instructor ratio. All three instructors were patient and protective especially with our two younger surfers. Within 20 minutes, everyone got up on their boards (and all of us are first timers). There were plenty of whooting and cheering from the instructors on top of the great instruction. The spot we were taken had a double break which allowed us to ride about 100 feet to the beach. We ended up running over our time we were having so much fun. When we were done, they ran and took the boards off the tired surfers, dealt with all the wet suits, and gave us cold bottled water. Then it was off to a nearby taqueria for a fantastic late lunch where Miguel helped to translate our orders and dietary restrictions (celiacs) to the staff. A few of us wanted to do some shopping before reboarding, so he took us to downtown near the cruise terminal with plenty of time to spare. All along the ride we carried on interesting conversations about surfing traveling and local culture and history. They were so professional and personable that it felt we were long time friends. Contrastingly, next to us in an adjacent break, was another party, some friends from our boat, who booked their surf outing through the cruise directly. They had a 4:1 student to instructor ratio, they were practicing in a shore break about 2 feet of water, they paid 30% more and wanted to charge 200% more to allow the observing parent to ride in the van, and most importantly none of them got up long enough to surf their 30 feet to the beach. The kids in their party have similar skills in terms of coordination and balance. We couldn't have been more satisfied with our day, and felt completely safe and taken car of. First off, Miguel and all of his surf instructors are such wonderful people. From the very beginning, Miguel totally understood what we were looking for with our group of mostly total beginners--just some laid-back fun. And he absolutely delivered. It was my bachelorette party, so he even brought me champagne at the beach! Miguel's wife Lulu took so many amazing photos of our group, and even made sure to get a photo of every single person standing up on the board (even though many of us needed a lot of extra help to get the shot...the instructors will literally hold the board for you so you can stand up if you are surfing-challenged, haha). Not only were the surfing lessons the perfect mixture of laid-back fun and challenging adventure (depending on the preferences of the student), Miguel also served as a tour guide and driver who took us ziplining after the surf lesson in the morning, and took us to an amazing taco spot for lunch in between. Such a great experience! Eddie was my surf instructor, and a great tour guide to boot. He picked us up in the little surf VW bug right outside the cruise ship. Don't be intimidated by the car, it's part of the adventure. Eddie set us up and gave the best, specific instructions I've had. We took a family vacation on a Carnival cruise, and my oldest son wanted to do the shore excursion for surfing in Ensenada. Not being a fan of most cruise line sponsored excursions, I did the research on my own and found Miguel. I could not have been happier with our experience! There were 7 of us, only one doing the surf lesson, the rest of us just heckling him, lol. We had chairs, bottles of cold water, and Max, Miguel's son who played with our granddaughter and entertained all of us. He took the family to a nice SUV and off to the beach down the road about ten (10) minutes. The van was stocked with everything we needed: surf board, wetsuits, chairs, water, etc. Eddie was super knowledgeable about Ensenada, surfing, etc. This was my daughters first attempt at surfing. Eddie was more than patient and for two hours worked with her on the perfectly sized waves. (For those hesitant about Mexico, the beach was super clean, the locals very friendly and safety was never an issue - even with an 8 year old girl and two elderly family members.) By the end she got a couple of really good rides. She was super happy about the experience and said that she wanted to do it again next time. Going on a cruise to Ensenada, I thought it would be a great idea to learn to surf! I booked lessons with Surf Ensenada after finding them on Yelp and their prices are much better than booking with the cruise line. I do not know how to swim, I rarely go to the beach, but I was able to get up and ride on my first wave. The trainers are very friendly and professional, however if you feel like they are being a bit rushy on getting you out on the water let them know you want to slow things down and go easy first. Even though my gf and I booked a group lesson, joining a family of 5, we all got individual attention from the many instructors. We met them at a 7/11 to pick us up and they drove us to a beach 5 minutes away. There was only a few people on the beach so it wasn't crowded. They set up a beach towel, beach chairs, an umbrella for shade, wet suit, some drinks, and our surf board. After riding a couple waves Miguel, the owner, asked everyone where they wanted to go. Downtown, back to the ship, somewhere to eat? We all wanted to go out and eat so they drove us to a local spot and we got 6 awesome fish tacos for $1.20ish total! After that they asked where else we wanted to go, but we decided to head back on the ship, so they dropped us off there.
