I can't say enough good things about Surf Bros HVAC. I saw their truck in my neighborhood and called them to service my AC, which hadn't been checked since we moved in. I had given plenty of thought and research into upgrading our 1961 gas furnace into a modern heat pump system. I gave the owner of Surf Bros HVAC, Red, detailed specifications and he quickly returned a conforming bid of way way more than I could afford but he had been listening when I said we actually rarely use the heater and don't really need or like air conditioning, as we prefer to open up the house to our (relatively) nice San Diego weather and our yards. So he also figured out a more efficient system for less than half the price of what I asked for, with the added benefit of requiring less reconstruction. His experience and expertise were apparent as he walked me through the practical engineering options and how they would fit with the way we live and use our home. Done deal. He continued to exceed expectations, showing up as scheduled, working clean and considerately. When an acceptable part was mistakenly sent by a supplier, he insisted on getting what he ordered. I would never have know, but he has high standards. His team was respectful and efficient, even fun to have around. My A/C unit recently went out and I had to begin the arduous process of finding a reliable, honest, and affordable company to repair it. As most us know, finding a contractor is never easy. Thus, I was not looking forward to it. I began by calling one of the larger, more well-known companies here in San Diego that has excellent reviews and a good reputation. I had used them before at my previous residence and they did a great job so I figured they would be a good place to start. I was shocked when they quoted me for an entirely new system! I was convinced that it was a straightforward fix, but they were adamant in trying to avoid addressing the main issue and were only focused on trying to upsell me by using scare tactics. Surf Bros HVAC is by far the best HVAC contractor we've hired, and in general one of the best overall contracting experiences to date! I met Nathan (Red) about 4 years ago during a service call, late in the evening, to evaluate an issue with a heat pump (that he did not install) . It was late, water was dripping through the door frame, and it was summer. Red fixed the problem and talked me through the issue and what needed to be done to prevent it recurring in the future. I was very impressed with his professionalism, knowledge and cleanliness. He left his card just in case any further issues came up. My wife and I felt very comfortable and trusted him based on that interaction. Recently the time came to replace these heat pumps due to age and the first thought that came to mind was 'I really hope Red is still in the San Diego area and hasn't moved'. I sent Red a text to see if he was still in the business, still in town, and if so who he was working for. I didn't really care who the contractor was but specifically wanted Red to do the work since I was so impressed years ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Red is now out on his own as Surf Bros HVAC! Red got back to me immediately, came out to the house, and followed up with several options included specs, pros/cons, his recommendation and associated quotes in great detail. I decided Surf Bros would be the contractor to use for this new installation. Red communicated well prior to, during, and even after the installation. He responded to email and text messages I sent promptly, which doesn't seem to be the standard these days and is something that is extremely important to us. He was on time and very respectful of our house and the neighbors. I was able to immediately determine that the quality of work Red and Alex performed vastly exceeded the prior installation. Red pointed out several deficiencies with the prior installation, in a professional and respectful manner, that likely caused the issue we had when I first met him. These were all rectified. Red installed isolation valves for the condensate line that are really awesome and will make maintaining and/or clearing them in the future so easy. Components such as the electrical disconnects and breakers, which I assumed would be reused were replaced with new. The carriers for the outdoor unit were replaced with high quality stainless steel ones which is so nice because the ones that were used for the previous were powder coated and rusted quite a bit. Painting them was difficult but no longer an issue. Things like that completely exceeded our expectations. We've had quite a bit of work done to our house over the past two years using various contractors and the process would have been much less stressful if they all presented as professional, detail oriented, and communicative as Red. We trust him and have referred him to our friends and family. Red is a very smart, great guy with a high degree of integrity. His business plan and onsite interactions clearly show he cares about those that work for him. Surf Bros exceeded our expectations and we're so pleased with our new heat pumps.
