The food was delicious and the process was so much fun! I came here with three other family members to participate in the Puff Pastry Bakes class. Our instructor was very personable, helpful, and experienced (she told us about how she had previously won Cupcake Wars and owns a local bakery herself). The kitchen was very clean, everyone was given their own apron to wear, and there was water available to sip on throughout the class. We made a Rainbow Carrot Ricotta Tart, Cherry Turnovers, and a Braided Apple Puff Pastry. All of the items were delicious and I would certainly make them again (they give you all of the recipes at the end of the class). The main reason for 4 stars instead of 5 has to do with pricing. I personally bought two seats in the class and my cousin bought two as well. When we walked in, they assumed we were going to bake all together and removed the materials for one of the stations. This resulted in us baking and splitting our goods amongst the four of us (instead of each pair having their own portion). For $81.50 per person, I was hoping to take more food home than I did! It is evident that company sur la table is no longer the same. Their customer service is deteriorating. I have been a long-time customer of this company. In the past they had excellent customer service. But recently with several store closures it is evident that the company is suffering. I recently invested $3500 on a JURA coffee machine, highly recommended by the staff of sur la table. the machine broke and it started having curdled milk when attempting to make Capuchino. the store from where I did buy the machine was part of the company closure stores. I contacted 1 of the remaining stores #154 .. The manager William was very abrupt, unhelpful and unwilling to listen. I also did contact Hector at the corporate office. And despite the fact that I was only 18 days beyond the return policy they refused to replace the machine. this certainly is last time I will ever use this company .....has obviously they are financially hurting and if they continue with this type of customer service practices I doubt they will stay in business for any longer. First off, the food was delicious. A friend and I did the pasta cooking class. I've been wanting to learn how to make pasta from scratch, and we got to try our hand at making a standard hand cut pasta (think a wider fettuccine) and Orecchiette. Both ended up delicious, and I'd definitely make them again. The class assistants/sous chefs were awesome; they were patient and even took the time to teach us some cool tricks. I'm withholding one star because they never sent us the recipes. Several students asked in class, and the main chef just told us "check your emails". Neither I nor my friend have received the information and it's been hours after the class. Also, the main chef wasn't always the nicest to us; sometimes she came across as curt and a little demeaning in her tone, but I'll just chalk it up to having an off day. My daughter took a cooking class to bake a Babka and a holiday wreath bread. Cost was 85 dollars. The dough for the Babka was premade-so there was that...and the wreath bread was made with 4 other people so she essentially walked out with a 4 inch premade Babka and a sliver of a wreath bread that was shared among 16 other people. Negatives: While I had called ahead of time to check how this would work, I was told that if the class isn't full, they could accommodate a group of 3 and 2 since there were five in our group. The class was only 2/3s full but they unfortunately did not honor what was said. For the price of $90 a person, we really didn't learn much and spent a lot of time standing around not doing much. Two days later when ups showed they still hadn't received the package I contacted customer service. They tell me they would change them to e gift cards. I feel like there might have been either racism, classism, or just plain bad service going on here. I'll let you be the judge. Went to pick up an item, checked the box and it did not contain the correct part - it had a rubber knob and should have had a stainless steel knob. This is important because the rubber knob is oven-safe to 390 F and the steel knob "is safe at any oven temperature". One of the ladies told me I was wrong and that it did not come with that part. After some arguing she offered to "give" me the part. I thought to myself, does she think I'm haggling to try to get something free or a discount? Is it because I'm Asian? We argued more because I don't want or need a handout, I just want my concern addressed. Then she went in the back and came out and said she was wrong, it should have had that part. Note: She did not apologize for her attitude or arguing with me. Well, at this point she and Sur La Table lost all of my trust and I decided to make my purchase somewhere else so I left. I was visiting 2-3 months ago and one of their shelves was poking out. It ripped my corduroy coat which had been my grandfather's some 40+ years ago. They offered to fix it and said they would call. I just want to buy everything here. I got here a little earlier than my cooking class and I kept seeing so many items I could easily spend money on! Coming from someone who enjoys cooking, this is a place anyone can come to and buy me presents that I would never return! We took a cooking class for a girl's night out! Loads of fun, and the instructors were very informative and I loved that. They also have this new nifty cappuccino machine which they said we can help ourselves in making some joe, but the class was an evening class and I couldn't stand to be up all night and go to work the next day so I passed on that! I do say that they feed you a lot, and I mean a lot, we practically had 4 courses! I took the recipes back home and have made a few dishes after the fact too! I did a sushi class a few days before christmas, and wasn't impressed. The instructor was nice enough, but didn't really demonstrate much, had to be asked to show basic stuff like certain cutting styles. And the way you had to share everything with the strangers at the next station, even down to raw fish, felt cheap and unsanitary. I truly enjoyed myself. We made Beef Wellington and it was delicious. The chef was fun, informal, and knowledgeable. The environment was clean and they constantly encouraged clean hands. It's also a plus you can BYOB. The only downside was it's 4 people to 1 dish. I was hoping to have a more personal experience with my partner and cook our own meal, not a group meal. I'm not sure if every class is set up that way or if it was just because of the meal we were making. I'm pretty sure 1 steak for 4 people is a lot cheaper than 1 steak for 2. With that being said I felt uncomfortable asking for the left overs considering we shared with 2 strangers lol. There is absolutely no reason under the sun to shop at these kind of places any longer and this is the reason why just go to Amazon and get what you want for the kitchen. I asked to see if they had any ideas for a pie crust they do not and if you act surprised or shocked that is supposed to be a great cooking store they don't have any of these things then they say "excuse me, They are so just aghast that one will even ask such a question. This is my second class to take and was happy to get back to try something new. The class was meant for 14 but ended up with 18 because of incorrect bookings so a little confusing to get started. For those who have never been - sometimes you are partnered with other groups. The first class I took was me and my daughter. In this class, we were connected with two other people where you shared cooking, cutting, etc. Not the same experience so may want to check on the class before booking. It is slated for two hours but because we had so much going on it was more like two and half hours. Everything you cook you eat there! There are no to-go bags, etc. so go hungry and know you will be eating around 9 p.m. if you do the night class. It is BYOB which makes it nice if you want wine or something to go with your meal. Ordered 2 Cast Iron pieces on-line that were on sale. The colors I wanted were not available, so I picked whatever color was IN STOCK...or so I thought! I also bought other plates and stuff, just to add to the order. Got an email 5 days later saying "Your order has been CHANGED, and has been SHIPPED". Apparently they have decided to give the cast iron pieces that were in Stock to someone else, and send me the cheap plates without calling me first. So I called, 50 minutes on hold and the lady blames it on Covid-19. Are you serious? Lousy Business decision from Sur La Table, this has nothing to do with the pandemic. I would recommend going to their Plano location instead of this one. We were returning items that we got from our wedding registry. Some were duplicates and others we realized we just didnt really need. The woman helping us acted so beat down by our request to return things. It took us 30 minutes to return 4 items. Rather than scan the item she would write the description and name of item down, then go wander the store to find it to "make sure they sell it", then come back and finish the return process on the computer. When she finished she asked if we had found items we wanted to purchase instead. We just stared at her. We hadnt moved from the counter. We explained the we would prefer a gift card so we can come back another time. She again acted like this was an inconvenience for her. She took a few minutes to stare at the computer, type some things, then finally give us our gift card. At the Plano store they scan the item, confirm its theirs (if it is) then give you the return amount on a gift card. It takes just a few minutes. I would recommend avoiding this location and just going to the Plano one. read more

Well, Sur La Table, you have a new convert. When I received a gift card to this store for my birthday, I was a bit perplexed. Sure, I like to cook as much as the next guy, but do I really need to stock my kitchen at a lavish store with a fancy French name? Couldn't I do just as well at Target? But the moment I stepped through those glass doors and into the wonder that is Sur La Table, I understood. This was something different. This was shelves upon shelves of amazing kitchen gadgets I had no idea existed and I suddenly needed very badly, and beautiful cutlery and saucepans I could never afford. There were gorgeous bamboo cutting boards and little porcelain egg cups, huge pressure ovens that promised to cook a whole chicken in 35 minutes and tiny little cheese knives with mother of pearl handles. I was so overwhelmed that I had to leave and come back later in the day with reinforcements. Despite being a pricey store, they had some great deals. Several shelves throughout were devoted to clearance items, and they were running a 20% off sale on TOP of that clearance price. Thanks to that, I left on my first visit having spent my $50 gift card on a set of new glass tumblers, two porcelain latte mugs, a pair of little white cocotte dishes, and a beautiful new oven mitt. These items are now the nicest things in my kitchen. When I finally made my way to the cash register, the woman who helped me was all smiles, making friendly conversation as she wrapped my delicate purchases and placed them in a crisp paper bag. It was clear she liked her job, which is gratifying. It's always better to fall in love with a store that treats their employees well. So yeah, I'll be back, if only to run my hands over the stainless steel saucepan sets and sigh. read more

I had been wanting to take a cooking class for a while and took my boyfriend for his birthday. Overall very disappointed. I thought that the two of us would be able to make our own meal but instead it was an 8 person group teaming up for a family style service. It made the event more social and got to meet new people, but we didn't have to chance to participate in all the actual cooking and there was a lot of down time. And unfortunately that was a lot of downtime without the ability to sip on a cocktail. In the end we ended up with a very small portion of the meal and we stopped on the way home to get burgers. They could make this a very good experience, but in the end for what I paid for the two of us, I would have been better off going to a fancy steak restaurant. read more

I decided to surprise my fiancé with a couple's cooking class for his birthday so I booked a Saturday Date Night class a few weeks in advance. About 48 hours before the class an unexpected emergency came up and I thought we wouldn't be able to attend the class. Since you must cancel your reservation 48 hours in advance to receive a full refund, I called in to get a refund and said I would reschedule at a later date. Later that evening I found out that we would be in town so it would be possible to attend. I wanted to sing up again for the class but all the spaces were taken online. I decided to show up in person and explain my situation. The nice lady that took my phone call earlier that day was already gone. The lady at the register checked on my reservation as well as the instructor and they told me that I the cancellation hadn't gone through yet. They said they would leave a message for her in the morning to let her know I wanted to undo the cancellation and she would call me. The next morning I noticed that I had received a refund so I immediately called and they knew exactly who I was and why I was calling. I was told that the cancellation did go through but I could get my two spots back! Yay! Surprise date night was back on! When we arrived on Saturday everyone was so nice! When I told them my name for the name tag they said "Oh, you're the one that cancelled and rebooked! We're glad you could make it!" Whaatttt?!?! I'm an introvert, people usually forget me, but not this time! The cooking class was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed it! We worked with another couple to make apple pastries, steak, and polenta. At the end of the class you get to eat what you make and you get to take home the recipes so you can recreate it at home. The classes are a little expensive but do look for the discounted classes. Well I can second the reviews that mention the uppity personas of the people that work here. I came in to join the 10:00 AM French Quarter cooking class this morning by Chef Ashley W. The chef explained to me that they cook in groups of four. And that she had two groups of four and one group of three this morning, (perfect right)? No, she wouldn't let me join because she said that would mean the group of three would have less food. On their website it states "Students receive a coupon good for 10% off in-store purchases the day of class". So when I told them I was under the impression that I can come in and join the class if there was room they said yes but not under these circumstances. So the cashier and the chef was telling me I cannot join because they didn't plan properly to accommodate what their website states. They didn't offer me a creative solution or even customer friendly service that you would expect from an upscale place. Like I don't care if I don't eat I'm just here to learn how to cook. Or maybe, crazy idea, offer me a 10% discounted ticket for a future cooking class.
