We are so fortunate to have a local, non-"box" commercial hardware store near us…read more.. It is the last of its kind in Land Park and we try to support it anyway we can! The staff are personable and helpful and it carry's many smaller items (like unique screws, nuts and fasteners) in small or singular quantities so you don't have to buy a "lifetime supply" for one project like you would have to at a Lowes or Home Depot!

It's my hardware store. I've found the Goldilocks of hardware stores. JUST RIGHT. Pocket Ace- just,…read moreno. Emigh- across town, ghetto 'hood but not ghetto prices. East Sacramento- that closed, now it's a plant store. Who needs a hammer when you can have a succulent? Elk Grove: $$$, plus being asked if I need help multiple times is scary (five times in five minutes, rule of thumb). Newbert's: yes, this was the best but it's been closed for decades and is probably a cannabis dispensary now. Archie's: also closed. Don't get me started. Why: Selection: This store has pretty damn much anything you could need, with limits. Kitchen, hardware, tools, electrical, garden, paint, nuts, bolts, chemicals. It's not a warehouse, it's a STORE. So calm down if you don't have every option, you're going to get in the ballpark. This fall I found a great manure fork here (no I don't live in Iowa but it's a great garden tool and mine got "lost" in my last move). PS, the big orange didn't even have one. Price: I was pricing Weber bbqs this summer and the units here were 10% less than pocket ace or Elk Grove. That got my attention. I recently got a great shovel for $16.99 on sale. Yes, a sale. You will have a range of options and usually there is a cheap(Er) option than at other stores, and better made. Recently I was pricing shovels at Home Depot and their cheaply made unforged (but costly) shovels couldn't match the shovel I bought at Hollywood. Help: someone can help you if you ask but you can browse without feeling like you are being stalked. Oddities: my last time here while at check out a customer came in cradling a duck and said out loud "I have a duck that needs repair." No one was fazed. The duck, alas, was a decoy but quite convincing. Need I say more?

It used to be around $3 and went up to $4 and now it's at $9.99 a roll. Unreal. The only good thing I can say is there was only one person in line before me when I went to check out and they had sod in stock. Buying sod has always been tricky. They are out of stock most of the year. I think people buy a pallet at a time so they leave nothing for the rest of us. Well, as pricy as it is I really need a roll and thankfully I could live with a single roll. We have a dog visiting this week so we need to create a potty area in our cement back patio. It's.a really tiny back yard without a dog run it it and it makes it awkward for dogs visiting. We only have one dog that comes and visit us on a semi regular basis and thankfully it's only a small dog. I'm not sure what we're going to do when the large dogs come for a visit. I am hoping the friends that are planning on a summer visit that they will leave their dogs at home. We really don't have the room. Spring is in full swing at the home improvement stores. Annuals are ready for the planting. Look for the deals where you can. They had some flowers on sale. 2 packs for $20. If you plan out your planting ahead of time you can get some great marigolds from seeds. They take a while to grow, but starting form seeds is so much cheaper and marigolds are easy to grow. They are pretty pest resisted and I heard they ward away pests too.. If you dead head them it will encourage more flowers to grow. And if you save those heads you can plant a the seeds it hold next year and you won't have to buy seeds ever again. I used to border our pond with Marigolds, it was really pretty that golden border around the pond. They area also drought-tolerant once established so you don't need to keep drawing them with water. Depending on the type of marigolds you get they can grow from 6 inches all the way to 4 feet. I've always had the 6 inch version. I have never seen the African Marigolds that grow from 3-4ft and they are the ones you may have seen in bouquets. I've also never eaten my marigolds. Apparently the Signet Marigolds are edible and lemon scented. I've only grown the standard French marigolds. I've been growling them since I was a kid when my mom used to garden. Marigolds was a staple in our yard.

I will never ever buy an appliance from Lowes again. They have made it so hard to deal with them…read more I have rentals in Nevada. (thats cuz they don't have insane landlord rules like Cal does). I used to be able to go into Lowes in Modesto, sit down with someone and order for either Reno or Vegas. Not anymore. I have to do it online. I have in my hand the email ad I got from Lowes saying if I bought now I'd get free delivery, haul away, install parts and basic install. Those things total about $450 on a dishwasher and stove. When I tried to order online I was not offered free anything. When I called customer service Sunday 4/26 they said "no such thing". So it was added to my bill. I made the order by phone . They wanted to deliver the next day. Without being able to speak to my tenant I couldn't do that so I put the delivery 2 weeks out. Without my knowledge or consent they sent me an email saying they would deliver on April 30. If I want to cancel its a TWENTY dollar cancellation charge even though they haven't done one damn thing yet. For a total of almost $500 its almost worth it to take a $33 flight to Vegas on Allegiant, rent a car, go to some independent appliance places, and come back home that night.

Today was an intense day. When it was time for breakfast my husband went for the milk for his brand…read moreflakes and it came out warm. He checked the freezer and the ice cream was soft. Not good signs. He turned up the thermostat on the fridge and freezer in hopes to buy us some time. By the time I got down there for breakfast the milk was still warm, but the fridge kicked on, I was hoping it would start cooling down. By lunch time the tempeture was dropping. That's a good sign and bought us some time. When my husband told me this morning that the fridge was on fritz I immediately jumped on Consumer Reports and paid for a subscription. Once there I immediately clicked on refrigerators. They have all different categories: French Doors, Side by Side, Top Freezer, Bottom Freezer, Cabinet lengthy, and ones with no freezers. So many to choose from. It would have been so much easier if we could just rebuy the one we had. It's a good one, it lasted around 12 years. I personally like our side by side so I went to work researching them and picked out 4 that were top rated 74 down to 67 on Consumer Reports. I also looked at the French doors, but only one of them had water dispensers and the freezer space was less. I first got online and looked at our local hardware store, but wasn't able to find the ones I was looking for by their model number so I went onto Home Depot's site and was able to pull up two of them. Two is better than none so we headed to Home Depot in hopes they had them in stock. When we got to Home Depot I presented the print outs of the two I found online and they were both in stock. The showroom was packed with so many options. Thankfully J'Leesa walked us to the ones I printed out. Both looked nice, but the one had the Craft Ice Maker and that took up extra freezer space, so I passed on that one. We don't really need giant ice balls, it's not like we're having whisky on the rocks every night. We also looked at the French Doors one and he agreed with me, they lack freezer space. Not that we have a lot in our freezer, but it would be nice to have the space if we need it. We do stock up at times when meat goes on sale, so we need that extra room. We chose the GE 25.3cu ft. Side by Side Refrigerator in Fingerprint resistant stainless steel, Standard Depth. It's the same one they sell at Costco for the same price, Home Depot says it's $900 off, but to me that's the standard price. They have it in stock so we scheduled it for delivery on Thursday. That is if all goes well and they will take away our other one free of charge, just like Costco would have. The only different is we only have a 48hr window to commit to it after that it's ours, that makes me nervous. Maybe I should have gone with Costco as they have an easier return policy, but we'll see. I'm hoping for the best with this purchase. We also got the 5 year protection plan. I'm not exactly sure what that entails, but it's better than nothing. This process too around 4 hours. 2.5 hours researching and 1.5 hours in the store. I'm really hoping and praying that we made the right choice as this is one of those "BIG" purchases that hopefully will last us 10 years and not the 5 years Consumer Reports says it will last.

Adj: Knowledgeable…read more This is a locally operated Ace Hardware store, I believe it is a franchise. The owners are helpful if you have questions about a home improvement or repair issues and don't know how to go about trying a solution to the problem, or how to use a tool, or even what something you're looking for is because you've never heard of it, let alone seen one, LOL. I haven't come in for those yet, but sometimes I'd find an answer on Google, but the real-life application and execution of that fix to the problem doesn't work out very well, and I'm stuck. This is where Greenhaven Hardware as a smaller, mom-and-pop outfit would come in. At a big box store it might be hard to flag down someone to ask a question at all. But here at Greenhaven Hardware, there's always someone asking if you need help. We came in once to get some plants and had some questions and they gave us some good advice and our plants are thriving now. They also seasonally have vegetable seedlings for sale if your thumb isn't the greenest (that would be me!) and don't want to attempt to grow from seeds yourself. Sometimes they would also clearance out seasonal items because their store has limited space compared to a big-box, so you can also find some bargains if your timing just happens to find you catching some good deals. I don't count on that at Ace, but it's nice to support local even if their prices are slightly higher (sometimes quite a bit higher) because we can get excellent customer service w/sage advice for tricky home repair situations. Overall, I'm thankful we have a locally owned and operated hardware store still in our neighborhood and it's a great thing to have when experience and knowledge is what you're looking for to tackle more complex home maintenance or repair scenarios. Thank you Greenhaven Hardware!
