I had a branch trimmer on a long pole with a cord to move the branch cutters. I need a new cord after rats chewed almost all of the cord. I went to Capitol Ace Hardware to get a new cord. The staff helped me find a replacement cord and a fastener to install it. They took about 15 - 20 minutes to find the compatible cord and fastener. He cut the cord to the proper length and installed the fastener. NO CHARGE, just great quality of customer service. I don't go to big box hardware stores any more. At them I needed to look 15 minutes for someone to find the right products without any help installing them. read more

Located in midtown. They have their own private lot. There is parking both in the front and the back. We came here looking for a guide for a shower sliding glass door. Soon as we arrived I went straight to the cashier and asked where it was located. She referred us to another sales associate and he knew exactly what we were looking for. He said that last time he looked they were out, but he took us to where it should be. They were out. He then said he'll look it up on the computer. He looked it up and it said it was discontinued, but we can custom order one. There were 3 of them. He turned his screen so we could see the options. He also looked up the details and one came with double sided tape so if the screw holes don't match you can still adhere it. That's exactly what we needed to hear as they didn't have the one we needed. We placed our order. We came in on Sunday and they said it would be ready to pick up Wednesday afternoon. We paid for it and we were on our way. Service was impeccable. While waiting for the order was placed I was looking at the padlocks and 2 sales associates came up to me and asked if I needed help as the locks were under lock and key. This review is purely for key copying or key duplication. For those of you that may have a difficult key to replicate or have had trouble duplicating it in person - this is your move. They seem to have the selection of keys that can do it. I initially tried home depot, but the do-it-yourself couldn't analyze my key and the in-person station said they didn't have the key available. I tried the Ace on Folsom, but the gentlemen said he couldn't do. Rite aid actually managed to do it, but it was expensive ($13) and had to be shipped. So, for about a third the price, this was a great value for a difficult key that is difficult to replicate. read more

I try to support local midtown businesses, and even know I'm paying a premium to do so. But the two cans of Scotchguard Fabric Protector I was going to buy today at ACE would have cost $35 with tax ($14.99 a can). I went online to WalMart and got the 2 cans of Scotchguard ($7.99 a can, half of Ace's price), two cans of Scrubbing Bubbles and a linen short sleeve shirt for $35. So great to have a midtown hardware store chock full of household necessities. Just as I walked in, I was greeted by staff and, was able to get my question answered for a door sweep. That's the piece under the door that keeps rain and cold air from coming into the house. I discovered wonderful things on my way to the door sweeps. Loads of Yeti coolers. Wonderful, cute and useful kitchen decor and utensils! Stylish and cute items, enough so to give as gifts to special folks. The checkout staff offered me a $5 discount coupon. I went and bought a ladder here and it was $80 which a was a little high in price for me. I took it home and realized it was too big for what I needed it for so took it back the next morning. The girl refused to refund it for me. She said they don't return ladders and I stated it only says discounted items can't be returned on receipt and she said it's a policy they have because people in the past used the ladders then returned them. I went on to tell her I didn't use it, there were no signs of use it still had wrapping on it. She still told me no. They didn't tell me this at time of sale they have no signs in the store stating this. She pointed at a tiny sticker on the side of the ladder that stated they don't return them. I'm always so dissatisfied with this location and the service from staff. They are scamming customers with policies like that they really need to inform customers before purchase. Came in with a coupon to save 10$ off a 25$ purchase, nowhere on the coupon did it specify I needed an "account" to use the coupon. The cashier refused my purchase despite the coupon having no such requirement. Sorry to say Capitol Ace has lost me as a customer. I came to the store a few times but one time I didn't realized that they had closed and went to the back. The manager was surprised and told me that they had closed but when he saw my panicking face he helped me out. It might be a small thing for him but it helped me so much. My pipes broke and water went all over the place so getting the replacement for my garden saved my day. I had such a bad day that day and he helped made it better. Thank you for all you do! I'd like this place more if the didn't rattle their neighbors with loud deliveries during quite hours early in the morning. It's become an issue because of how loud they've become. It's every Wednesday from around 5:30 to 6:30. It starts with prepping for delivery so the loud forklift is fired up then around 6:00 the yelling and banging starts. Once in while it wakes me (I sleep like a rock) but it wakes my school age daughter and my neighbors and their kids. Even if they could start prepping at 6:30 for a 7:00 delivery I suspect neighborly bliss would be restored. It would seem to violate Sacramento City Code Title 8. read more

My mom and I dropped in to have a key duplicated and Sam, who helped us, couldn't have been more delightful! He showed us the right plastic sleeve to help the key stand out from the rest, and then, when another employee pointed in the direction of the scissors we were seeking, Sam tagged along, pointing out the type we'd wanted, which were not immediately obvious. He then unlocked the scissors from the shelf so we didn't have to go in search of someone to help us. Sam was a TREASURE. read more

You do not want to shop here. They do not require masks, despite the current California State and local Sacramento County Public Health orders. They do not even have a sign on the door that masks are required by law for the health and safety of customers and more than half of the customers were not wearing masks when we went in there. As of July 30, 2021 Sacramento County Health Order :​ Face coverings must be worn, regardless of vaccination status, in all Sacramento County indoor public settings. Ace Capitol Hardware manager Michelle told us that the local owners Brett Werner and Greg Werner do not allow the employees to follow the law by having a county required sign to wear masks or requiring masks for customers. I've been coming here regularly for several months now as I renovate my home. It is literally the best hardware store I've been to for customer service and knowledgeable help. Folks are friendly and always help me find what I need. Last night, two gentlemen stayed late to help me when I came in 5 min. before closing to help me troubleshoot a 75-year old faucet that did not want to come off the pipes. I have to say the absolute best is Cheryl who is often at the front counter. She is super friendly and really goes above and beyond to be helpful. She's also full of great knowledge and has helped me tackle renovation problems more than once. Customer service is hard (been there, done it) but folks here do a great job. Worst service I have ever had. When asked for assistance with something, the man who was sent to help me was incredibly rude. With 5 staff members standing around, I asked if he would be helping me and he replied, "guess not, see ya" then proceeded to joke with the other staff members about how I didn't know who I was talking to. Mom & Pop's do exist... Well ACE Hardware still is a well known name and store, but not so much these days. It's great to have this hidden one on the grid. I don't have to drive off the grid to a big box - Home Depot or Lowe's - for one thing! Kudo's to you for surviving the American obsession with cheap prices and poor customer service! Please do not expect anything fancy here. That is what is to love about this little place. I went to get two things, both of which I walked out with. (I should add, I went to Home Depot a few nights before this and they were out of the one thing I needed - out of everything they stock) I peeped a few things I knew I'd need in the future, but I didn't buy them at the time. Their prices are slightly higher than the big boxes, but for sheer convenience this place does wonders. There was approximately three people working and one customer (me). Apparently they are doing something right at this store, because they are keeping grid-ies employed. They have everything an Ace Hardware should offer. From paint to making keys, this place is full service. They also sell decorations, lawn chairs, and snacks in case you want to get it all in one fell swoop! They offer free parking! Most places on the grid can't say that! They deserve extra stars just for that alone. One of those lovely grid gems that doesn't make you pay to shop at their establishments ;) Granted it might only be a quarter, but trying to find one elusive quarter takes a lot of time and effort most times! I attempted to buy an item from the store. I put in an order through the Internet following a conversation with the store in which they verified they had the item. Payment was excepted for the item and I was to pick it up for the next day. The next day I received an email saying that the item was not available and that my order was canceled it is now been over a week and they refused to refund the almost $900 that I paid for the item. I've had to involve my bank in this matter because of their poor business practices. Very unhappy with Ace at this point especially this store. 2.5, I am hot and cold on this place, sometimes I want to rename it to Crapital Ace Hardware leaving empty handed, other times staff are great and I get what I'm looking for. They sell lots of different stuff, some higher quality, some junky. I did get a key made here rather easily once. I also got a good deal on a few garden implements, but the spade broke after a month. I came in to get some azalea mix and they didn't have any, despite 20 different kinds of soil. Prices are hit and miss, sometimes way out there, other times a good deal. Staff are very hit and miss as well. I was pretty upset to come out after calling ahead to ensure they had what I needed. The guy on the phone wasn't too coherent and it took me a while to get across what I was looking for. His repeated response was 'we just got a ton of soil in, we have everything'. I noted that many places don't carry this particular soil, but he insisted they had it. Got there after work, no azalea mix. A very nice bearded man helped me find the next-best alternative, but I'll just go where I know they have it. Ace hardware is one of those stores that reminds me why I like to live downtown. I was in Fair Oaks in the 90's and lived down the street from an Ace there. That Ace was a bit bigger and a little more polished - but it really has a strip-mall store feel to it. The one downtown has what the adverts on the TV always say about stores that is rarely delivered - real friendly and personal service from people that are not just doing a job. I can say much the same for Broadway Hardware or Hollywood Hardware on Freeport, but for some reason I really like Ace. They have great specials - when the low electricity bulbs came out last year they were selling them for a dollar each or something and so I bought a houseful's worth. Later on I saw that they retailed for four times that. This christmas they were selling light strings for three bucks a string or something. I have found what I needed and got good prices nearly every time I go - weed whacker, faucet guts for a sink, varnish and paint, gardening supplies, pocket knife, keys, to name a recent few. Another cool deal is that you can go online, order something from their website and they ship it free. My wife wanted crock-pot liners of all things and Safeway and Raley's don't stock them. Found out online Ace does and at a very good price, and so ordered half a crate (ha ha) and had them shipped free. Ace called me a few days later and I went by after work and picked them up.
