Let me start off this review by saying my real name is not Jan. Jan is the name that I use for Yelp.
The stylist I had at Supercuts didn't know how to deal with my texture of hair. I called ahead of time to ask if a there was a stylist who knew how to do and was comfortable with African or hair. I was told, "Um, I guess. I mean, we all get the same training."
When washing my hair, Lisa didn't really get in there. There was no scrubbing. It felt like she was afraid. She spent most of the time on the surface and barely touched my scalp at all. She missed the back right section completely, never lifting my head off the sink to thoroughly scrub or rinse. She didn't put an appropriate deep conditioner on but rather a sprayed leave-on, that again she only put on the top and not at all within the hair or at the root. When she blow dried my hair, which is mid-length and by this point a tangled mess, it took her so long that parts of it needed to be re-wet AND her next appointment and several walk-ins had started to arrive. She then spent only 5 minutes flat ironing just some sections of the same hair it took her 45 minutes to blow dry! Again, she was not thorough. She was trying to get me out of her chair. She didn't attempt to flat iron it into any style, which is actually QUITE easy to do, and was going to send me out with my hair just laying flat on my head with no style or even part in it. I took out my comb and parted my hair down the middle, then put it back in the two pigtail balls I was wearing when I walked in. I looked exactly the same as wen I entered the salon but my hair was now LESS straight because of the rush job Lisa did on the flat ironing. When I video chatted with my mom that afternoon, she was appalled and said I should not have paid. By the way, the blow dryer Lisa used belonged to another stylist who was out that day and when I pulled my comb out of my bag to style myself, Lisa said, "Oh, you have your own comb?"

The fact that Supercuts has no stylist who can do African American hair in 2021 is unacceptable. Not just from a social standpoint but also profitability. Do some research. Black women willingly spend a LOT of money on our hair. You're missing a profitable demographic in the market.
The fact that my "stylist," who is a manager of the shoppe I went to, couldn't admit that no one there could properly service me is even worse. My time and money were wasted. $69 after tip and I walked out looking the same as when I arrived...but with less straight hair. I'd have paid much more for someone who actually knew what they were doing.
I'd actually planned on giving Lisa a $20 tip because I could tell she was struggling but at least had kept a good attitude. But, when she decided to send me out without finishing because other people were waiting, that's when she lost me and her tip was reduced to $7. read more
